  1. Back on topic..

I just nod and smile now. There's only so many times you can patiently explain that the muzzle isn't because the greyhounds like to feast on fresh human brainz before you start getting a little snide with people- "It's actually a splint, he broke his nose and now he has to wear this special nose splint  "

Yes, of course greyhounds MUST be baby killers otherwise they wouldn't have to wear muzzles. And dont forget that because they are racing dogs they need SOOOOOOOOOO much exercise!

  2. Having been rescuing dogs for around 6 years now, I have found that the dogs that have taken the longest to rehome (12 months plus) were all large adult male brindles. I have had a few black fosters, and none of them were long-termers.

We never had trouble rehoming the brindles, lots of people commented they look like skinny tigers so I guess it was the perception they were "exotic" that made them so easy to rehome.

Someone really needs to start a rumour that black greyhounds are a rare dog

    Yes!

I have had around a dozen greyhound fosters all up, and at the moment actually have my first black one, so we'll see how we go. She is also a senior though (9 years old), so that may have some impact on her rehoming prospects. Hopefully she will find a wonderful home :p

  3. Ha. This is so true. My friends brother walked in on us sharing a cuppa and noticed my black lab under my chair. He nearly jumped out of his skin. Apparently she had evil eyes....though I dont know how he could see her eyes from the other side of the kitchen.

I recon movies have a part to play in this too. Threatening dogs are always dark and the hero dogs are usually paler. Probably a bit like the 'knight in shining armour' and dark clothed villian idea.

Personally I like the shine on a black coat.

what I'd like to note is that in 'I Am Legend' with Will Smith - the hero dog is a GSD!! :p ;) :dancingelephant::dancingelephant: and he was dark but tri coloured!

I refuse to watch i am legend for the fact they kill him :mad

    Me too!

  4. Update:

Bloods were clear. Urine was clear. So that leaves either incontinence or dementia.

I'm going to book another visit with Sophie after Easter.

I'm leaning towards it being dementia. Lilly's behaviour has been a bit odd lately (and I know our circumstances have been too, which is why I didn't want to assume it was behavioural in the first place).

She's going to the toilet inside (not normal for her at all, she's trained to go on towels if she can't hold it), she's just going wherever she feels like it. She has started barking at nothing. She has also started whining for no reason.

She's not in pain. She's got a normal temperature. Her diet is good.

She's 11 so at the age where dementia is a real probability.

There is medication available to help ease dementia symptoms...which is good. But I wonder how long we can live with this before it gets too big of a problem -for her, more than for me. She's not the same dog she was even six months ago...and that makes me very sad.

  5. I have two greys and a whippet, they don't smell, and they only get bathed about once a year. I have had quite a few foster greyhounds as well, and none of them have smelt. I've never met a smelly greyhound. And as greytmate said, it is not at all out of the realms of possibility to find a grey that would fit in with your lfestyle

  6. My dogs have human names, Clyde, Ryan and Arizona, all except for Dozer and he already had that name when we got him.

We had two ratties called Felix and Prince, sadly Prince is now RIP but we have a new baby rattie and my daughter has named him Milkshake :o Previously we had pet mice called Freddo and Caramello :o

My daughter is the one who has chosen the food names, she seems to have a liking for them :D

  7. It seems a shame that that so many otherwise beautiful, healthy and lovable dogs die this way but this is the selection process for many working dogs ... I would hope that they use humane and relatively painless methods to terminate the dogs but no one really monitors these things ...

It is the same for racing greyhounds, they breed litter after litter, and then the pups that are no good are culled... I don't know the figures but imagine it would be very high

At least in the greyhound industry they have brought in laws about humane killing of the dogs, I have heard that there are still some trainers out there that don't follow the laws but hopefully most of them do.

I have two rescued greyhounds, Ryan was only 16 months old when dumped at a Sydney pound with 4 other young greyhounds, one can only assume that none of them were fast enough.

And my mum for most of her life had purebred, registered working kelpies, but her last kelpie was not purebred or registered, just one that she saved because Tess was no good as a worker and her owner was going to shoot her :D

  8. :) How are you settling in? Have you started work yet? Is it going well? How is Ruby going with Steve? (100 questions lol!)

I love the house I'm renting. Great quiet street, awesome neighbours who are friendly without being in-your-face. The house is still a mess with boxes to be unpacked but there's no rush, I hope to stay here for a while...until I can afford to buy anyway. I'm checking asking prices in the area and if I save for a couple of years, and if the market hasn't picked up, I can do it, at least I can get something which may need a bit of work...

I started work on Monday, am in training til the end of next week. I'm catching up with lots of my former team mates and everyone has been so welcoming and happy to see me. :birthday: I'm so happy to be back there, it's just a lovely place to work and I missed it a lot more than I realised. There have been some staff movements too so some of the people I worked with are now in my new area, which is fantastic! My social life should improve too as there are lots of functions and stuff happening outside the office.

Ruby is great; she's thriving as an only dog. I miss her terribly. I think it's doing him good as well - he's already given her two baths and is more interested in looking after her than he was when we were together. She gets a walk most days too, which she rarely got with me - I exercised her in the yard and did some training with her to keep her interested and occupied but I'm sure she prefers a walk! :champagne: The others are really settled without her as she was the one with a bit of food aggression so meal times were always a challenge. They both get more of my time and energy which is great for them too. :D

good to hear that things are going well for you :birthday:
