  1. A strange puppy Tale. (Not tail)

GDAY Everyone Statutory warning : We are total newbs when it comes to pets. So got a puppy on Xmas night 25th 2018. A golden Retriever. 6-7 weeks old as we could not get his exact age. So excited to bring him home on first day, everything was rosy and happy go lucky. He played with us a-lot, ate good food, drank water and slept at least 20 hours in day. A complete cheeky monkey. Felt like we got a dream puppy. So next few days he woke up at 1 am in night, which was ok, we as a family have been doing a lot of reading. We expected him to wake us up, so we comforted him took him on pads for potty. In morning he woke up at 5 and we took him for a walk. He was so tired he could not walk back home. We picked him up in our arms on our way back home. Also forgot to mention he kissed many other dogs first day. We assumed it was kind of saying hello DOGGY STYLE. So first day we gave him little rice mixed with eggs and carrots and finely chopped beans. He enjoyed his meal. We are giving him 4 meals of 30-45 gms of food on average. Second night also he did the same thing, except in night he vomited what he ate in night. We cleaned up next morning. As usual gave him his some food, he refused to eat. We did not care much as he was doing good. He refused to eat at noon and in evening, so we were little concerned but did not pay much attention. My wife suggested to mix his food with Chicken broth. He licked all the broth but did not eat the food. Now the alarm bells started ringing. Next morning we were at the vet. No fever He was very lethargic Doc gave him some snacks and he ate them. We were kind of embarrassed Checked his teeth and his ears Put something in his arse ( i think that was to check temperature) We told him his de-worming was done on 15, so the doc correctly guided us to do de-worming again on 31st. He told us Tuffy is doing fine and he has no problems at all. He gave us another appointment for his vaccinations. We came back home with joy, and since he ate at the doc, assuming he would be hungry we prepared his meal. Bugger wont even taste it. Tried again with chicken broth . Still very lethargic. Went to his bed and took a nap. When he woke up we tried to play with him, he would go in a corner and sleep moving objects did not interest him at all. First time puppy owners, really confused. So next day Took him to doc again.Doc gave him gravy and chicken canned food and he licked all the gravy refused to eat the food. We were given 2 tonics to improve his hunger to remove any gas related issues.Did multiple test to find if he is infected with any virus. He tested positive with Parvo virus. We were given option to put him down or give him treatment and survival rate was not so good. The treatment is very expensive for parvo, So we went back home and did some reading on internet about this virus. We decided to give him some home remedy first to see if his situation will improve. That evening something magical happened, we gave him only chicken soup with some boneless chicken. He drank the soup and again did not eat any chicken. But this was improvement considering he did not consume anything from last 24 hours not even water. He played a little after that and went to sleep. He woke up at night again and we tried to give him some food. He ate! very little like 8-10 pieces of Pedigree and then slept again. Next morning he ate a little more and drank a lot more. He appeared very skinny, he started asking for food and started licking his bowl. Now 7 days have passed he is eating and drinking as all puppies should. I see a shiny bowl after every meal, he licks and cleans it very nicely. So my first question is, Did he recover from Parvo? Is it possible that he did not even have pravo? Maybe he was missing home? He could have been cold and missing warmth of her mother etc etc.? Shall I consider testing him from another place? On internet they say with parvo virus dogs don't usually survive more then three days? Once I get the answer to these questions, I have now other set of problems that I need to dicuss, but I guess need to take it 1 step at a time

Ok guys , I found a new home for Tuffy, its 700 kms away from my place. Hope his new owner will never hit him. The new owner owns a lab, I plan to gift tuffy's personal stuff to the new owner, also would be sharing his food habits, games etc. I want both of them to bond together. Would it would be wise to keep tuffy hungry few hours before travel, and then new owner feeding him with hand first time? Would it create a bond that way? Anything I am missing please let me know

Will keep u guys posted with updates. Tuffy Went for his first morning walk today. He was really Happy. He spent like 1 hour playing in grass and waited to come back home to poop :). This time I was not angry as before. At least he pooped in right place. Tuffy has Learnt Kiss command and he now rolls much better. He is shedding his hair like crazy. Poor guy is so scared of me that If I raise my voice he runs under the table. Yes scary me!

We also don't give him any food while jumping, when he sees us eating he gets over excited and would jump on a hot cup of coffee or tea , since he has become taller he would jump on us and try to go right after food. Usually it caused spills on dinner table or sometimes even our clothes. Most of the time we will get angry with this behavior he gets a loud "No " then he will try to run and still have a go at food. Then I have to stand up while having dinner and calm him down. ( I am thinking of keeping him in leash or crate him while lunch and dinner times) I am confused if I do that he will never learn to behave? Also I wanted to ask you, is it ok to give food to dogs while we our eating? Is this encouraging bad behavior?

Thanx I will try this. and let you know how it goes.

Hey guys, A special Thanx to Persephone, Tassie, tdierikx, Loving my Oldies for your ongoing support and willingness to help. Last week update on tuffy Potty Training- No potty inside house for last 1 week, 3 times he pee inside house in last week 5 times he peed in my balcony. Every time he pee in correct place he gets a reward. Biting and Chewing- He only bites me while playing and then goes with head down after I go OUCH, I also move out when he plays very aggressively. so i got bitten 3 times in last week with 1 major blood and I myself got vaccinated for tetanus and rabies. Chewing is a major problem, we got him many toys but seems he only wants slippers and furniture and even our walls. He is biting corners of walls. We cant keep him in crate all day. Vaacination 3rd Vaccination done for tuffy after 4th is due on 9th feb - he can go out on walks.. Yay I am more excited then tuffy. Training Tuffy has now learnt the following commands SIT - UP - Works only with food COME LAY DOWN ROLL- AFTER LAYING DOWN - Only works with food in hand Spin- While standing Shake hand - Paw High Five Easy- Go easy taking food from my hand GO TO BED - Bedtime Aggressive No- When he is misbehaving Behave- While running on couch, he will lay down 1 2 3 GO - Runs after a Ball or any other object and fetch it back He has trouble understanding the following commands Wait- He cant understand wait, He will follow me as soon as I stand and move. Leave IT - I use a treat and drop it on floor- but this only works for him when I have a treat. He wont leave if I don't have a treat Chewing our clothes while walking - We will stay PUT and offer him toy or treat then only he will leave us. If no treat he wont leave biting clothes while walking. He jumps on us while we are eating food and tries to grab him- I am currently searching articles on internet on how to train him not to grab food from our hands. Some pics of Tuffy strange way of sleeping- He will jump on couch when I am watching TV with me and lie down on his back and sleep. Posting a small video for you guys. Sorry for exposing tuffy's privates. My mum got offended by this video hope you guys are cool with it. Tuffy Sleeping On His back Video - https://photos.app.goo.gl/nnnm2SV2UAumYxBz9 Tuffy eating pic https://photos.app.goo.gl/bhXrFJemYHhLGpyc6 Many of the video's worked great for tuffy, some did not but anyway we are both learning by trial and error.

Loving my Oldies what do u suggest? How do I tell him to stop barking and Jumping. Can u suggest how to kill his over excitement? After eating dinner, he will usually pick his favorite soft toy a FISH and drop it on my feet. He expects me to play with it. I would only play if he doesn't jump on me. Then he would run around and growl very aggressively. What I have tried so far: I am giving treats when he sits down and doesn't jump on bed. I have followed all videos shared by persephone, seems he will only obey me till i have food in my hand. After food is finished he is like " Your not my parent anymore"
  12. A strange puppy Tale. (Not tail)

Persephone I would like to thank you for sharing Donna Hill Video. I tried to do the same with Mr. Tuffy. He bit me once while doing it, however I see a lot of Improvement in tuffy. After 15-20 attempts he has started to understand the game. So he will put his head down for treat. I have posted videos of Tuffy Jumping on bed. This is a similar situation recorded today on phone. Usually he grab blanket and then barks, today i was ready and moved blanket out of his reach. I was working on laptop and he was playing with Kong toy filled with peanut butter and making loud growling noise. Is this play or aggression? So far I have been putting a treat on floor. But seems he doesn't want to stop jumping. Tassie Yes we are investing in a crate today evening, even if it costs Tuffy's Freedom. We cant sleep in night fearing that he might bite us . Yes we allowed free run but paying a huge price when we try to restrict his access now. He is whining and barking when blocked outside. Thanx for suggesting x pen, I will read on internet about it. We are going to buy crate and clicker today itself.

I will share the video Tuffy Jumping on bed - https://photos.app.goo.gl/B9dhFbfhiwNdjKu96 Tuffy Bit me- https://photos.app.goo.gl/bhJpq4xxPb39UG7z8 Please also see if Tuffy is skinny? He is not roly poly like other puppy videos on internet.
  14. A strange puppy Tale. (Not tail)

Ok I would like to discuss another possible training opportunity. Tuffy Sleeps in same room as us. He will usually come running to me on bed and jump his front legs. So his half body is on floor and 2 legs up on bed. He will start biting the blanket very hard and wont stop. If I move the blanket away he will bark very aggressively and if he can get his mouth near my hand or feet he will try to bite with aggression. Any idea how to stop this behavior?
  15. A strange puppy Tale. (Not tail)

Only If every dog owner/lover could see these videos before getting a puppy. I wish I would have done extra research work before getting a puppy. Seems like tuffy would be my experimental kid. We gave him free access to house loads of love, this has spoiled him so much. Today when we restricted his access poor guy kept barking, hate taking freedom from him still.
  16. A strange puppy Tale. (Not tail)

Also I was reading on internet, his privates should fall down at 2 months. Tuffy has nothing Swinging down under. Shall I wait more or take him to vet?
  17. A strange puppy Tale. (Not tail)

Ok guys, I am teaching tuffy not to grab food from hand. Its working the opposite way for him. He used to love banana, now he wont eat it. What I tried. I took banana and he would grab it from my hand by jumping on it. So I would close my hand and say No or wait. I tried that for 2 min in last 4-5 days. Now he is growling at the banana. He goes Grrr... I dont want it. Also whenever we drop anything on the floor he will run fast and picks in his mouth and try to swallow it, any idea how to train on that? Also if he swallowed something is it recommend to forcefully take out from his mouth? Would he bite me? He goes very aggrresive if we try to pull out something from his mouth.

  19. A strange puppy Tale. (Not tail)

persephone - T we had this amazing 2 min short training session multiple times and he seem to love short sessions rather then boring long ones. So thanx alot. tdierikx - Thanx for that great video. I took tuffy to a 11 year old lab today he is very friendly with puppies and vaccinated, They bonded very well and spoke in some doggy language. I wished I could have clicked a video. The Oldie took tuffy by his chain for a ride in park. A very small one but very productive.
  20. A strange puppy Tale. (Not tail)

Yes this would be good, I think I am taking this too seriously, I need to make it fun for Tuf I tried to click a video for you guys yesterday, where tuffy would bring his bowl when hungry and drop on Kitchen floor, Can u guys believe it took me 15 attempts begging to do this on camera. He did NOT do it. Finally I gave up and went to kitchen to prepare his meal. I have a little 6 yeard old visiting out house very often as he mother is working full time, she is my sis daughter. She gets so excited when she sees tuffy and they make a deadly combo together. She would be like jumping tuffy tuffy tuffy and clapping hands, now tuffy gets excited and tries to bite her legs and then the entire things get out of control, both of them cant understand a word that I say. PS: ty for the videos
  21. A strange puppy Tale. (Not tail)

Thanx I will watch at noon, I tried kong style toys with little peanut butter while grooming him, yes he let me groom him without biting the hand or comb. I will give a try to frozen. PS: I totally agree with you, this is what I had to learn myself, Dogs don't understand what is SIT and we have to explain the commands before without voice. No dog training video tells this on internet. Its like telling him to OBEY and he goes like searching ....searching ....searching..... Command NOT Found.
  22. A strange puppy Tale. (Not tail)

Not the kind of response I expected, but seems like you all are biased. I expected something like you "SHOULD NOT DO THAT " I mean what kind of man would hit a puppy? Ok but I can live with your reply, I feel less guilty now and tuffy also playing and licking me today, seems he has forgotten. Loving my Oldies Yes you are right yesterday he draw the first blood while playing he bit me really hard but I was Like OOOOOOOOUCCHHHHH and then something really funny came out of my mouth and everyone laughed but it was insulting to tuffy I said " Kutta Ke bache:" Which means you "son of a dog" in english and I raised my voice but did not hit him, so that was improvement, but I had to crate him after that. I feel sorry for little fellow, he really likes being free but me NOT specially when he is in Biting mode. tdierikx I tried something different. So I was training him to SIT and this really worked. I gave him a spoonful of food asked him to SIT, he obeyed and then I told him to STAY, he obeyed and then I tell him to SHAKE HAND which he did after that I said COME ( to eat his food). This really worked for TUFFY. So it calms him down doing three steps. His tail is wagging at 100 miles per hour though. Also what I noticed was tuffy is smart to learn stay and come himself without explaining him. I did work on 10 minutes morning and evening with peanut butter as treat to teach him Hand shake. Also he is trained to pick up his bowl every time he wants to eat and drops in my hand. I will post the entire video for you guys. "Time-outs can be effective when he's in naughty chewing legs/hands mode... if he won't stop when you ask him to, then pick him up and pop him in his crate and ignore him for 10 minutes... repeat as often as necessary so he gets the idea that you don't like the sort of "play" he's been engaging in." yes thank you I am trying this now, will let u know if this works and teach him some doggy manners. "When I used to raise puppies for rescue, my older dogs used to help with discipline of naughty behaviour... one older dog would take so much, then turn around suddenly and literally flatten the naughty pup with a huge growl. This is how other dogs teach puppies manners and it looks/sounds like they really want to hurt the puppy, but usually it has only given puppy a really big fright - enough so that puppy learns pretty quickly that what they did just before being flattened just won't be tolerated at all. My "UHH" is a modification of the older dog's tone when correcting puppies, and it is rarely accompanied with physical action, except for removing puppy to a time-out if they persist in their naughty behaviour." I might be asking to much but can I get a video of this? I will try searching on you tube if i can find, this sounds very interestig. I actually really like UHH OHH, Even I like it not sure about tuffy. PANDI-GIRL - He he yes puppies are great way to socialize, not just where we live but even on Internet. **Chukles**

Ok I did a bad thing, I ended up hitting tuffy while training and I feel really bad about it. I am feeling guilty, Though it was a slight tap on his face but I still feel he is a baby and i should not have done it, he made a cry and went under my arm and slept. I stopped training him for now as I myself did not know why did i do this. What should be my punishment? A slight tap for a tap would not make tuffy happy, so how do i remove my guilt?
  24. A strange puppy Tale. (Not tail)

Ok tried, as reqquested earlier to break down his meal. so if I spread across floor he makes entire floor messy and if I give him a spoonful he thinks i am taking his food. He doesn't bark or bite but tries to dominate the bowl. After finishing his food he would lick my hand. So I am assuming we are friendly with each other when it comes to food. TRAINING UPDATE I am keeping a record of my Do's and Don't while training puppy. Please feel free to share your inputs or feedback. I have seen somewhere on internet that max training time should be 5-10 min I started training yesterday with help of food, at first he was not interested and will go behind me and smell my BUTTOCK. Initially he was very frustrated and was not able to understand why i am asking him to SIT? So I kept asking him to SIT and he kept jumping on me to grab the food, however I was not there to give up so easily. I initially started by saying SIT but Tuffy had no idea what is SIT. I guess. Watched a video on you tube on how to use hand movement to make him SIT. Walla it worked! When i said sit and moved food with my hand towards him. First he picked his neck up and then sat down. ( So my first learning was voice commands needs to be explained to a puppy). He has already started understanding SIT and when I say SIT 6/10 times he will SIT and look for my hand. BITING AND CHEWING UPDATE After success of SIT command. This made me feel confident and bossy, now I felt like ruler of 7 worlds and excited like hell. I was like hell ya I can train you but later that day In evening when tuffy came for play after his meal, he starting chewing on me and furniture and I was like I can fix this. So as usual I came across this article where it was explained to shh the dog or Tap his nose or Say No in assertive way this would help. But this does not work for tuffy. He actually became more aggressive. I tried to raise my voice but not he did not listen, poor fellow slept without understanding why I tapped his nose or raised my voice So I started reading again and came across another article how to handle biting and chewing. So now next morning I was ready with my advanced weapon system His favorite soft toy and treats! I knew he would come running at me after completing his morning breakfast. It worked initially, he started playing with toy, after good 2 min he started chewing me again and then when I said sit he did not let it go then I used treat. I had better results. He looked at me SAT DOWN took the food from my had enjoyed it and few seconds later it was my leg again. I am not sure if he undertood that I am treating him for not chewing my leg. I think he understood he will get food when he chews my leg and SIT. So he is biting my leg and then look up at me to treat him. WTF... He is also stubborn he kept coming back till I was out of treats. Then it was my socks and my legs again. So for next time, I have a plan for peanut butter, lets see how he reacts to that. He completely dislikes me combing his hair and dry bath. Will try that and let u know how he reacts. POTTY TRAINING Update: He has not potty inside house for last 3 days now, he uses potty pads most of the times, but poor guy is a bad shooter, he goes outside and tries to do it on pad some how he misses the aim or the angel of drop is incorrect so it will land half on pad and half on floor I don't understand why he will pee on potty pads sometimes only, rest of the times it the floor or crate. You guys can help me with this maybe.
  25. A strange puppy Tale. (Not tail)

Thanx what a wonderful way you have suggested to slow him down with his eating. I will try that and let you know. Cheers!
