  1. I recently bought two breakaway collars from Andrea. They are great quality and I am very happy with my purchase. They are thick webbing with a solid clasp, which pulls apart should your dog get caught. Knowing my two will be safe should they get caught up by their collar, is a huge weight off my mind. Helping Andrea fund her continuing animal rescue is also an added bonus. Thank you very much.
  2. I heard a report that the man was coming to the aid of some children, whom the dog was about to attack. Not sure who the children belong to.
  3. Pet insurance will probably exclude pre existing conditions ie diabetes or any related conditions. Just out of interest, what is the normal blood glucose range for dogs?
  4. Thank you everybody for all the ideas! While we will never know what actually happened, and after doing some research, I think we can put it down to a fox. Injury around the neck resulting in possible crushed windpipe, surplus killing, probably lone animal attack and hole the size of a fox in fence. The size of the goat had me confused as I thought its size would be too big to attract a fox. It was mentioned that they could take kids and while being a miniature goat she was still not small. However, I found a reference to disrupted food source. Six to eight weeks ago I started finding dead rabbits on our property. Over the space of about 5 days there were 12, all probably the victim of calacsi (sp) virus. Major food source was probably significantly reduced which made it look to other, non common sources. Animal behaviour is very interesting and I have learnt alot about foxes.
  5. I think I found the same fact sheet about foxes. I also found fox scats in our adjoining paddock. The feral cat idea is interesting. We do have some big ones around. I would have thought there would be more trauma, if it was a large feral cat. The gundog idea is also interesting as a WeimX and LabX have been missing from the local area for the last two weeks. I would have thought there would be more trauma as well. Pole cat/ferret unlikely as I don't think we have any around here. Good ideas though.
  6. My neighbour has just lost her miniature goat to an attack, by we think, either a dog or fox. Her brother was not touched and she was housed in the same area as chickens. The chicken pen was situated in her pen. The only injury the goat had was what I could described as puncture wounds around her neck. There was no blood that I could see and she hadn't been mauled or eaten. There was a hole underneath the fence, which is not unusual as we have wombats everywhere, but was not there prior to the attack. Their dog had just been put into kennels the day before, as they went away for New Year. Height wise the goat was about the same height as my female lab, but not as solid. Would a fox attack something that big? From my googling the wound is typical fox, but we're not sure as there is conflicting information. Any ideas or information would help. Also if a fox, should I be worried about an attack on my dogs. She was a very friendly goat and the family is devastated. RIP Josephine.
  7. Thanks for replying. Obviously, it is not that common to get polyps removed from the anus. She had the surgery on Tuesday and apart from the first night where I had to stop her from scooting she has been fine. I have been feeding her roughage like psyllium, carrots and bananas to make sure she doesn't get constipated. Toileting hasn't been an issue but I have been keeping an eye on it.. The stitches are dissolving and mainly internal so she won't need to get them removed. The vet said that the lump seemed unusual and appeared to have grainy anal gland tissue in it. Lump was no where near the anal glands so I opted to get the pathology done. Still waiting for the results. Hopefully, it will be ok.
  8. My 10 year old lab has an anal polyp which has become bigger over the last week. We have decided to get it removed. The vet said that one of the risks is she could become incontinent. Has anybody had a similar operation performed on their dog and how did it all go? The other thing is how did you manage the wound, stitches and going to the toilet? I assume she will be on antibiotics after the operation. Thanks
  9. I just saw this ad. What a smart dog! Ha ha! http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kljT0b2lmGE
  10. A few days ago I fell in our paddock. Thinking I had broken my ankle and not being able to get up, I had to pull myself up to the house to get help. My cattle dog came running over, only to drop her ball on me. Fifteen minutes later she is still trying to get me to throw it. This is typical of her. She is so ball obsessed and this really annoys me no end. At least she is consistent. :D
  11. One thing I should have mentioned. If you decide to use the water method make sure that the water is not hot.
  12. Had similar situation. Snake handler hours away. Wires wouldn't come out as snake not in house. Snake handler suggested to get hose. Put it on jet and use the water jet to direct the snake to where you want it to go. Nozzle with a trigger best. Start slowly and try to teach it what the water means ie spray left turn right. Keep it away from places that it can hide. Bit of trial and error, but at least you get to stay a fair distance away. Didn't get to use this as snake disappeared, so may be good in theory but not in practice. Good luck!
  13. We put a paste of bi carb soda (baking soda) on. I know I use to do it for ant bites. Don't know whether it worked but can't hurt.
  14. My lab developed pancreatitis and thankfully hasn't had another attack. She was on raw before and we modified her diet somewhat to exclude most fat. She gets lean beef mince (preservative free). Most chicken mince will be high in fat and will also include the skin, unless you can mince it yourself. Cans of sardines, tuna and pink salmon, all in springwater. (No mackeral as it is very high in fats ). Non fat yoghurt. Turkey necks with all the skin off. Roo tails once a week. As a treat I buy her chicken breast from the butcher and dice it up for her. I also give her carrots and bananas. Happy Paws treats are low fat and they are made by a Doler. Her banner it at the top. Hopefully this will give you an idea of what you can feed!
  15. My lab has pancreatitis. Happy paws training treats are all natural, low in fat and no preservatives. Also they are made by a Doler. I get the perfect pooch treats. I have been getting them for a number of years and have found Lynn very reliable and quick to post. My dogs love them. She also has a banner as an official DOL advertiser. Highly recommended! www.happypawstreats.com.au
  16. This was advertised recently and looked great. I would get the toasty buns one for the kennel. Has anybody used it? Looks safe and is washable. www.warmbodymat.com.au There is also a cool gel mat for summer time. www.coolgelmat.com.au
  17. My ACD was exactly like this when she was constipated. Did you noticed a bowel motion today?
  18. I had an occasion to stop suddenly a few days ago with our ACD in the back of the car. While she was restrained, it did not stop her from hitting the back of the seat and ending up in the foot well. The top half was secure but her hind legs kept going. Does anybody know of a full body harness (fits around both front and back legs) that is available? Also I assume that airbags can be an issue? Has anybody had any experiences with airbags deploying while their dogs are in the car?
  19. I put unemployed but am actually retired. Perhaps another choice for occupation?
  20. Well I picked her up this afternoon and she is alot better than she was, although she is very tired. I can hear her snoring as I type this. :D I spoke at length about her diet and my Vet is happy for her to continue with her current diet with some modifications. No more pigs' ears. Non/low fat cheeses and yoghurt. She is getting Joint Guard so the fish oil tablets will go. The tinned fish is in springwater so that can stay, but not too often. My raw supplier minces his own beef. It is lean and preservative free. The chicken mince is made from wings so that will need to go. Either mince from carcasses or breasts, both skin free, but I will have to look at cost and availability. He also mentioned the horse mince. That I will consider, as he said that one of his dogs has a sensitive stomach and doesn't react to it. My vet is hoping that is it a one off event. She has a week of antibiotics to take and I will be feeding four small meals until her stomach is back to normal. I will keep an eye on how she reacts to various foods. Thanks for your help and fingers crossed this does not occur again!
  21. The sardines and tuna are already in springwater. The mackeral is in oil but I will try buying some in springwater. Pigs' ears are out (not that she had them often) and so is cheese. I did use that as a treat and she does love it. I have had to cut out alot of carbs as her ears would get yeasty. That is why I am trying to avoid any kibbles. She also gets two fish oil tablets a day, so I will have to check if these will still be OK. I will talk to the vet, as well as my raw food supplier, in order to get some ideas, but it is good to know I can still incorporate some form of raw into her diet.
  22. I would love to feed her Kangaroo, however, she always throws up afterwards. That is interesting about the bones. It never occurred to me that the marrow was a problem. She gets turkey and chicken necks/wings. Would this also be a problem with marrow? While I hate the thought, maybe horse is an option. I know it is lean and my supplier sells necks, as well as mince. I just need to get over the food aversion. I may need to look at this. Non fat yoghurt will be the go. Are the fatty oils in fish a problem or is Omega 3 OK. She looks like she will be in for at least 2 days. She is currently on a drip and being starved. I knew something was wrong when she wouldn't eat breakfast. No Lab refuses food unless they are really sick!
  23. My 9yo lab is currently at the Vet being treated for Pancreatitis. She is not overweight and is very active. Her diet is good and I feed her lean raw meat/bones. She also has vegetables, yoghurt and fish during the week. So that I can be ready for when she is released should I be changing her diet? I tried a search on DOL but didn't get much. Will she need to go onto a low fat dry kibble? Does anybody feed raw and have a dog with this condition? Any help with what I should do will be greatly appreciated, as I would like to make an informed decision.
  24. This is right. We had an emergency callout to our vet as we had no idea what had happened. We had just dealt with a potential snake bite and were just getting over that when this happened. Thankfully she didn't get bitten but we were a bit anxious when she refused to walk. I will give her a bit more time to heal using the Previcox and then see if this problem returns. PS Just out of interest to all an ACD can have a face off with a black snake and not get bitten, I am absolutely amazed as I caught her, and both snake and dog were having a go. Thankfully, it only cost us $250 instead of $1000 for the anti venom plus fees/hospitalisation. What with the callout on Sunday night for the leg injury it has cost us $500 in vet fees in 5 days.
  25. My Vet gave us 10 days worth (5 tablets), but said I don't need to use them all. This came on very suddenly so I am hoping that it will pass with rest. Thankfully the weather is bad so it makes it easier for her to stay inside. A relative is a dog chiro (horses too), so I may need to invite her around for "lunch". :D I will continue until the weekend and then see how the injury goes. Thanks
