  1. I have migrated from the UK 4 years ago and have brought with me my 8year old Labrador called Molly. I am looking for a puppy for her to keep her young and active and would like a gun dog as they are smaller in size and weight, which is much easier for me to manage (dont know if this is the same here in Australia) I also would like good hip and elbow scores. I am finding it very difficult to get both requests. Any idea on a good breeder.

There are quite a lot of labrador breeders in Qld. Have a look in the breeders section on here and you will find some very reputable breeders. Give a few a ring and ask some questions, I am sure that you will find someone that you feel comfortable dealing with. If you want another breed, each breed has its own section on DOL so you should be able to find someone that suits you. Ask the questions you want the answers to, you will soon get a feel for who you want to deal with.

  2. Just an update on Bellarell Newline Lacey Face, she became a champion 1 day before turning 8 mths old and has been winning either minor in Group or Minor in show at nearly all her outings as well as 2 RU to BIG, I love my baby face. Also not to be outdone my Whippet bot got his title in the same week as face Bellarell My Lord Muldoon is just 18mths old and is a real sweetheart. This picture of Face was taken at the Grafton show week, my good friends Trevor and Amanda took her down with Muldoon to show for me. The picture of Muldoon was taken after his second Best Head win at the QLD whippet shows earlier this year. 2 homebred champions in one week, gotta be happy with that.

Congratulations!!! You can be very proud of your kids, they are a credit to you!!!

  3. the confusing part is as mirawee said, that it is on two genes... yellow (which can mask black/choc) and the black/choc gene. If the yellow gene didnt exist, it would be a case of remembering that black is dominant to chocolate. You can have three different possibilities then, Homozygous Black (black dog, not carrier for choc - BB), Heterozygous Black (Black dog, Choc carrier - Bb) and Homozygous Choc (chocolate dog - bb). When you introduce the yellow gene, the presence or non-presence of the yellow gene (Ee or ee) dictates whether you will see the black or chocolate. a chocolate dog cannot carry black, because chocolate is bb, but it can carry yellow (Ee). In this case MG Gibbs' granddam being black would have been black carrying chocolate and maybe yellow, and Gibbs' mum being chocolate would have the bb which could never produce black unless the sire carried the black gene, in this case, Gibbs' father, who is yellow masking the black gene (eeBB)

Oh that makes sense now, I understood that there was 2 genes from Mirawee said, but I didn't understand how they work together...now I know lol

So is this possible, homozygous black bitch, if bred to yellow, can she produce yellow pups?

I think... yes... if she is a Homozygous (black) bitch she can still carry yellow so she'd be EeBB. if she's mated to a yellow (ee) she could produce yellow pups but she would not be able to produce liver pups. If she was a heterozygous (EeBb) black bitch, depending on the yellow sire, she could produce choc and yellow (if the sire was a yellow with heterozygous black gene)

    I think... lol

But if she carried yellow, would that mean that she is NOT homozygous?

The reason for the question is I went to the Guide Dogs QLD open day, and they brought out one of their black breeding bitches, and her 8 black puppies, and they were saying that because she is 'dominant black' which I understood as laymans for homozygous black, then regardless of what colour she is bred to, she will only ever produce black...so obviously she doesn't carry yellow, but if bred to a yellow, her pups could carry yellow...and possibly chocolate yes?

Her puppies would only carry chocolate if the yellow stud dog carried chocolate and then only some of the puppies would carry chocolate....50% black carrying yellow 50% black carrying yellow and chocolate

  4. Qantas allows for dogs that fit in PP40 or smaller to go as excess baggage from selected airports. Otherwise it's $ per kg.

Virgin has flat rates for weight ranges.

Just wondering if any of the air companies still allow you to take dogs as excess baggage or do you have to pay the full per kg rate for them???

    +1

Thank you for your replies

  5. The committee of the Callide Valley Canine Club would like to extend our thanks to all exhibitors and helpers for their support of these shows, and we trust you had an enjoyable weekend.

We would like to specifically thank our two judges Ms Yanina Smith (TAS)and Mr Wayne Burton (NSW) for making the shows an enjoyable experience for exhibitors, our show manager Maxeen Hobson for her organisation of our helpers and ensuring the shows ran smoothly, all the stewards and table writers who kindly gave up their time to help, our management committee and anyone who helped with the set up of the showrings, etc or in any way, and last but not least, Mr Jim and Mrs Sue Cook (our Show Secretary) who worked tirelessly to make the shows happen.

Congratulations to the winners and all participants for your contribution to a very enjoyable weekend.

Thanks Callide Valley for a great weekend, we thoroughly enjoyed the weekend.....

  6. I agree with the suggestions made here. Contact a breeder and talk to them, find out about their dogs etc...health testing etc. I would be inclined to talk to

people who breed quality labradors not people who just breed chocolate labradors..... if you want a particular colour that is fine, but make sure that you are getting a well bred dog not just the particular coat colour.....

  7. This club has tried to do their best to run a great weekend of shows and has invested a lot financially, and due to a natural disaster the show may not be able to go on. I think it is pretty sad that you are expecting a refund under the circumstances. if they have to refund entries it will probably break they club, so i hope you enjoy not having anymore shows at Wondai.

I definately will not want my entries refunded as I know what is involved in running shows

    Ian

My cheque was banked yesterday also. I am expecting a refund as I cannot imagine it going ahead.

Toowoomba show people as so lucky that that wall of water did not occur the day before when they were going home from showing.

With alll the devastation going on it is very un Australian to be expecting a refund under these circumstances. Shame on you!

    Lighten up .

The airlines are more flexible at these times when due to weather flights are changed. Also the airport is likely to be underwater.

I dont recall ACDs rule saying they were asking for there money it was just an enquiry and a statement of fact

The Burnett Kennel Club wishes to advise exhibitors that the show scheduled for this weekend the 15th & 16th January will be rescheduled at this time a date has not been set but we will advise - hoping you are all safe and dry please copy this and send on to others that show dogs - thank you this is also on oz show

Great News I hope I can make it to the show when you know what date it will be on....I hope everyone stays safe.....

  8. all roads r cut atm cant get in bundy cant get out im stuck help!! LOL

Ash there r creeks everywhere that would flood lol

Well if Bundy is cut that means the cataloguer and show secretary will not get to Maryborough...

and your show manager is still stuck in Gladstone

Who is the show manager? i heard it was Maxine Hobson and thought she lives Hervey Bay area.

Just heard from someone, they rang Marilyn and they will making a decision if show is on or not at 3.30 - 4 pm today.

Yep it is Maxine she lives in Hervey Bay, but has been with Bonnie in Gladstone and is still there courtesy of all the rain and cut roads

  9. I would not rely entirely on this map, I know of two places where roads (1 is on the hi-way) were and are still cut and they are not even marked on this map!!!

Ok ta for the heads-up. Were those places north or south of Maryborough?

Not in the Maryborough area, they are in our area, just saying that some of the major flooding in our area is not mentioned on this map at all. As I said one spot is on the High way and is not even marked on their map....
