  1. Assuming none of the roads between Brissie and Maryborough get closed (which as far as I'm aware is unlikely?) then I will be there.

There are already roads to Bundaberg closed. My brother in law tried to get home to Bundaberg (from Brisbane) today and they can't get through.

Yeah but I'm talking about Brisbane to Maryborough - according to the RACQ road closures website, there are no issues at the moment. Where did your brother-in-law get stuck?

154 and 167 are current trouble spots (roads closed) - both north of Maryborough.

I would not rely entirely on this map, I know of two places where roads (1 is on the hi-way) were and are still cut and they are not even marked on this map!!!

  2. Just wanted to send on behalf of the Caboolture Kennel Club, a huge thank-you to all of the exhibitors who entered our shows on the 20th and 21st of November. :):mad

We have over 920 entered for Saturday's championship show; and over 800 for Sunday's show! (Plus huge sweepstakes entries on both days, and a great figure for our Open Show also.) :)

These are magnificent numbers for our club, and we are grateful to those of you who have supported us by entering your dogs.

More details still to come, so please keep reading the thread, and also tell all of your friends that the show is being held at the Caboolture Showgrounds Main Oval, not at Elimbah.

Thanks again...a very busy week ahead here.

Hope you have a really great weekend, I am just sorry we cannot come

  3. I posted this in the breeder forum as people with alot of valuable dogs to protect will most likely know about this. I have seen the solar snake repellers for sale and wonder if they do in fact work or would I be better to fence the entire dog compound with super small mesh??? I am from NZ where we don`t have snakes so have never had this problem. The last thing I want is to lose any of my dogs to a snake so any advice would be much appreciated.

    No they do not work!!!

  4. I got one tonight from a "hotmail" account.....

Subject line was .....Need a pet

and that was it.....the email itself was blank

I replied and said ....pet what ??

Was going to offer a nice pet rock I have out the front, but was worried that it would not be given the care it deserves.....

Must be doing the rounds, I got the same thing as well :rofl:

  5. Although sadly there are breeders that are breeding solely for colour - please do not tarnish us all with the same brush, as we are all NOT the same.

Certainly no suggestion that all chocolate breeders are the same - like you, I, on occasions breed all three colours and appreciate each colour of our breed.

I think most of the ones that are doing the colour thing have only been in the breed for 5 minuits anyway, as I and others have said there are some poor expamples of all colours of the breed out there.......I guess it is that labradors are such great dogs, lots of people get on the band wagon and breed without the knowledge needed to produce quality sound dogs true to type......

  6. Go ahead and carp about inflated puppy prices and complain about people avoiding the show ring. It will all come out in the wash. I'll be willing to bet that, given the boost that high prices have given chocolate lines in recent years, the number of chocolate dogs/bitches doing well in the show ring will increase over 2010 to 2020 and the price situation will normalise (ie, the colour premium will vanish). Chocos, in general, will do fine (compared to other colours) in health tests and they will be normal or better with respect to temperament.

It certainly is not unusual for chocolate labradors to do well in the show ring, in fact on two occasions in the 1980's a chocolate labrador took out Best in Show at the Labrador Club of Qld. A well respected breeder of chocolate labradors (also breeds quality blacks and yellows) has titled at least twenty chocolate labradors in the show ring and also has numerous titles in field and obedience trials......we are well used to seeing quality chocolates in our state and have done for many years......

We can only hope that we see a lot more chocolates being shown and titled this can only help to strengthen the breed in general.....along side the yellows and blacks, after all it is the same breed we are talking about, the colour is irrelivant.......as blackdog stated as long as the breed type is maintained in the process....

  7. This thread seems to have gone slightly off topic....but I will say that hopefully it makes people aware that they can find quality puppies from breeders who are not out there to make a quick buck....

My favourits saying is "Every home should have a labrador (or two)" and in my opinion breeders who constantly bump the prices up because of the "demand" are putting quality puppies out of the reach of most families....and that is where the happiest labradors live, with families.....

If I want to buy a dog to improve the blood lines in my kennel I will (and expect to) have to pay top dollar, I would go to a kennel "with runs on the board" and a vast knowledge of the bloodlines in their kennel to seek advice in the hope that they would sell me a sound dog that fits what I am looking for......however if I was looking for a lovely lab to live with me and sleep on my lounge I certainly would not expect to have to pay the prices that are being asked in most places these days. In My very Humble Opinion I believe that the higher you put your prices the more puppy buyers you "force" to go to Back Yard Breeders......

I can remember the days when all I wanted was a labrador and we could not afford one, I hope that by keeping my prices as low as I can more families can enjoy the absolute joy of having a labrador and can also get a dog that has been health tested and recieves some follow up over the years of the dogs life if they wish to keep in touch.....

ETA Unfortunately it is not only chocolate labradors that are being bred without regard to standard and health testing, there are a lot of yellows and blacks out there that are far from what I would call "quality" litters....sometimes it is actually hard to tell that they are labradors..... :provoke:

  9. One question about chocolates while we are discussing them, are they meant to have pink rims around their eyes and pink on the inside of lips??

None of mine do!! I believe they should have liver points and that yellows and blacks should have black points, unless of course they are yellow with liver points which is not true to standard, and cannot be exhibited in shows.

  10. $1800 is way too much to pay for a labrador puppy - regardless of imported lines. Chocolate puppies should not cost more than yellows or blacks.

Please be persistant and patient - your purchase of a quality labrador puppy will be well worth the wait :grouphug:

    :grouphug:

  11. I breed all three colours on occasions, my yellows and blacks are equal quality to my chocolates, I charge the same price for puppies of each colour and it is no where near the prices being quoted in this thread. My dogs do not have titles on both ends of their pedigree name, but certainly have titles at the beginning, they would be quite capable of attaining working titles if anyone wished to compete in any of the working persuits....

Quality is the name of the game, just because a dog is imported does not mean that it is any better than dogs bred in Australia, sometimes as with everything the quality is not as good......

Look around, talk to breeders see what is out there.....

This is a public forum so I feel people with ethics should not say anything bad about any breeder.....

Chocolate "mania" has meant that there are a lot of people out there breeding for the colour and not necessarily for quality....

Go to the Lab National if you can, see which breeders are represented there, I am sure that most breeders are only too happy to talk about their dogs.

Incidentally I pay no more for stud fees for quality chocolate dogs than I do for quality blacks and yellows and often use AI: no reason why a chocolate litter should cost any more to produce than any other colour.....

  12. I hope you guys have fun up there, we are not going this year, but will be waiting to hear reports on what is happening.....we will be doing the South Burnett shows this year and visiting with our family at the same time.....good luck to you all at Rocky, should be a great weekend, I know we enjoyed it last year when we went up......have fun.....
