Barking/whining At Other Dogs

Hi, I've got a 6 month old Jack Russell who's an absolute embarrassment to take out for walks! He's pretty good at home, very rarely barks & obedience training has been helping. But whenever I take him for walks & he sees another dog he just starts barking & whining & just doesn't pay any attention to me. Anyone got any ideas about how to stop him from carrying on like this? If I just keep taking him out everyday will he eventually get used to the other dogs?

Yes i think so, i would try what dr hari says and thats to have some little treats so when he does this act you correct he then treat him see how it goes let us no :o

If he tries to pull and cries turn around and walk him away a distance until he settles. Reward for calm then try again, if he leaps foreward turn around again.

Dont try to verbally correct him, only talk to him when he's calm and paying attention then heaps of praise. He will learn that misbehaving gets him nothing. ALso I would not let him tug towards dogs without some sort of command "ok say hello etc' and he can nicely approach them and then come away when you say so. If you have friends with calm dogs it is easier to train with as well.

Yep, take him out everyday :o

Did you socialise him when he was a puppy? So, he is use to seeing and smelling other dogs?

To me it sounds like your pup is very excited. At that level, it's hard to get his attention (even won't treats won't help). I would suggest that you do some training with him, at home and in public places. Train him to have total focus on you.

If it's gets to much... I will turn around and walk away from the other dog. Don't be mad or embrassed or frustrated.. simply turn around and walk away, he has no choice by to follow you. He isn't allow to go to any dog with this kind of behaviour. When he calms down, you can bring him over, but until then... not a good idea.

My beagle used to whine pitifully whenever we passed another dog - it wasn't loud but sometimes got the other dog a bit fired up. I used treats (he's not fussy but use something they love) and as we approached the other dog but before his attention was focused on it I would show him the treat and make a big fuss of telling him "good boy" until we were safely past. EVentually he just got out of the habit and I no longer needed the treat.
