Penn Hip Testing

I need some information on vets in Sydney or Newcastle/Hunter area who do Penn Hip testing. I have received one quote from the Vet Specialist centre at North Ryde for $750...seems rather steep to me! If anyone has had this done, can you advise what the charges were just so I have a bit of a guide, as well as who took the xrays.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Cheers

slightly OT but may be relevant, but I was told the ANKC had rejected Penn Hip scores, and I believe the FCI has just recently had meetings and the recognition of these scores is considered no longer viable. Sorry I cant help with the topic, but thought this may be of use.

Wow...well that is very interesting. It certainly is recognised by the OFA in the US and therefore the AKC. Can you advise where you heard this...is it on a website or through a Canine association? I would love to get further information?

Really? That's news to me! OFA & PennHip are competing organisations here in the USA. Here is the only mention of PennHip you will find at the AKC website:

"PennHIP A method, established in 1993, of evaluating hip dysplasia in dogs by calculating hip laxity; within-breed ratings are provided, permitting breeders to select dogs with the best (smallest laxity) hips for breeding future generations."

I found that in their glossary section.

The AKC only uses OFA results on official documents, NOT PennHip. PennHip is not popular here at all for many reasons. Where did you hear the OFA & AKC recognise PennHip? I'm curious!

i cant really say anymore but

there is a report being released from the FCI as soon as that is released I will let everyone know. MM has by the sounds of it a rough idea on the popularity of the

PH system in the USA which is what I have been told, from memory was there a court case with the CKC and Penn hipp ?

I haven't heard anything re: a court case with PennHip. All I know is PH isn't popular here and very few, if any, breeders think PH is worth anything.

eta: Oh MY! Go to the PennHip website and look who is endorsing them: http://research.vet.upenn.edu/Default.aspx...enn.edu/pennhip

I hadn't been to their website in years, still a crock for sure.

Hi Hunterhound!

We had our Aussie Shepherd girl x-rayed by Martin Strong at Motto Farm Vet Clinic (Heatherbrae, near Raymond Terrace). He suggested the Penn Hip test as well, and it was only an extra $100 so we went with that as well.

We were very happy with her scores (having had her x-rayed elsewhere, laying crooked, causing awful scores!). From memory it was around the $400 mark for the whole thing (including the $150 for the x-rays to be interpreted in WA)?? Certainly WAY less than the $750 you've been quoted.

I'd give Motto Farm a call. Can PM you the number if you like.

Deb :)

Thanks Deb

This is scary as I have actually just phone Martin at Motto farm just prior to reading your post. I went onto the Penn Hip site & searched for approved technicians in Oz...and Martin is the only one close. It's great to hear that he doesn't charge an arm & a leg to do it either. He was busy in consults when I phoned so the receptionist is going to get him to phone me when he is free.

I have previously had my xrays forwarded to WA as well...but seeing this gent is the only one who interprets the xrays (albeit he has been doing it for years) I wonder if he ever gets it wrong? At least in the US & their OFA system, they have three different vets look at the films, they each score & then they take an average. Once again a little subjective, but I feel it is better than just one person making the call.

I have been considering going to Martin for a while now as he has a few others bloodhounds on his books, so hopefully knows the breed reasonably well by now. My current vet is great for the day to day consults but as Martin also does repro work, I may utilise his clinic as well...I have had some positive feedback about him!

Thanks for your input...most appreciated

Cheers

Michelle

The ANKC at their last conference voted to continue their support of the current BVA scheme and not PennHip, however it does seem that the "commercial" partners associated with PennHip are really starting to push their case. At this point in time, however, there is nothing to show that the PennHip is superior in reducing HD over time compared with the BVA scheme. BVA scheme is that which is accepted by ANKC member bodies in terms of litter registration limitations for Lab Ret. However, you do not have to use Wyburn to score, you can choose to send your rays to the AVA panellists, however the turnaround can be several weeks (if not a couple of months from what I have heard), whereas with Wyburn, you send down the rays and I normally get a result from him within a few days. I also think that with the number of rays he scores, we are getting a more "complete" picture from him, IMO.

Mine are all sent to the AVA-3 vets look at them, and i got all of mine back in 3 weeks.

I like the idea of three vets looking at the films not just one person...regardless of whether you need to wait a little longer to receive the results. JMOHI...So from now on I will probably use AVA, so i get more than one set of eyes looking at the films. I want to ensure i get an accurate result as my ultimate aim is to assist with improving our breed here.

I don't want to go to the extra expense of Penn Hip testing if the results are not going to be accepted/recognised by governing bodies. The contributing factor for me wanting to Penn Hip is that it can be done earlier than 18mths - 2 years. I have a 6 month imported bitch & I am eager to find out how her hips are...not to breed early, just purely to give me peace of mind that I haven't done my dough! Importing is such a gamble...

sorry...it was CHIC and I have since contacted friends in the US & confirmed that the AKC do not recognise Penn Hip....I was initially lead to believe otherwise.

No worries, HH. Funny you mentioned CHIC. I just got my dog's CHIC certificate from the OFA today in the mail!

Hunterhound why not xray her hips and have them read now to get some sort of an idea.

I did this with my then 12 week old Knotty babies, and my boy came back with not a flash reading.

We put him on a course of Chinese medicine herbs, acupuncture and 18 months later he scored a 7.

Not bad when the average for the breed is supposedly 16-18.

My vet thought they were not flash and wanted them read by Wyburn who confirmed that they were not good.

It was Wyburn who read them again 18 months later, and gave him a good reading.

Dont leave it up to the vets to advise you, but get them read via Wyburn or AVA, that is what they are trained to do.

As mentioned in another post, my vet thought that Tess's hips were crap, and said he wouldnt bother sending them in.

I still wanted them read and they came back with a score of 1 ;) Not bad when the score average for our breed is as you say 16 -18.
