Am I Missing Sometthing

My boy Benson has a changed personality. He

had one eye removed due to chronic dry eye even though he was under specialist care. Long story. We moved address a week ago now and he seems to have settled in OK and doesn't seem stressed out at all. His appetite is excellent and looks forward to his meals. He even finds his way upstairs, even though our bedroom is downstairs. The only thing is that even before the move, he would stand out in the back garden for quite a long time just staring. The other day, he stood out there in the rain, until I carried him inside. He usually hates to get wet. He has always been an independent soul but in the last few weeks he has become very clingy. He asks to be picked up and held, which is unlike him. Is he trying to tell me something?

I think dogs will change in personalities a little after a major thing happen to them. It's all depends on how you deal with it.

Maybe Benson's isn't as good as it was before, so he is slowly adjusting to it.. and needs you around to help build up his confidence. He is learning how to use his other senses more... like with the touch and smell, so it would take him longer to get anywhere.

Charlie got ill.. his personality has changed... nothing obvious but something I'm starting to see a lot more of. Like, if he doesn't like anything, instead of ignoring it, he will be more vocal about it and let it known that he isn't happy about certain things. He is more demanding and a lot more whinger when he wants something, I'm stopping this behaviour though because it's getting annoying.

I think it's really important during times like this where human emotion can alter when our dogs go through these things to really enforce things like NILIF.

Humans can easily pass their sympathy and grief onto dogs during these times which can definately effect the dogs behaviour.

If you are worried about the dog though you could get a Vet check and confirm what the expectations of the dog settling into having less sight would be.
