ok so im considering getting an ACD puppy (will be ready to come home in 4 weeks if we get her)..

I plan to get a crate and crate train. She will be a show dog so wont be getting her desexed (other reason for getting crate). she will have free run round the house and supervised play time with my big boofy boy. I plan to have set training times every day and set times where we will go walking once fulling vaccinated.

is there anything else i need to think about that i need to start getting now to prepare for her IF we get her mind you i think we will.. just have to work out a few things with the breeder..

thanks for the help

i would just do some research on the breed and ask the breeder on what motivates her dogs that way it will help you create rain, train and give you more understading on what you think should be done before the pup arrives.

like barriers, food etc

When you get her, can I just stress SOCIALISATION, SOCIALISATION, SOCIALIASATION :) . Then just when you feel confident in the amount of socialisation you have done, do it all over again :)

Good luck I hope you get her, and I hope you have some fun in the ring with her too :)

we are getting her.. and she will have lots of socialization.. i have a dog at home already and i have a friend down the drive with dogs plus both myself and my son will be doing show training with her so she will get lots of chances to socialize with other people and dogs..

How old is your son? Reason I ask is that I think it often profits the dog if an adult teaches new behaviours and a child practices with the dog.

I hope you are buying a pup rated as a show prospect from a very experienced show kennel. It increases the chances that the pup will make the grade in the ring.

he is 9 and she is primarily his show dog. and yeah we have got her from a breeder and his breeder reckons she will be a great show dog. her parents and grand parents have all done well in the ring..

Unless he's an exceptional child, I'd recommend you do the bulk of the training Toolz. Much easier for a child to work with a dog that already knows the ropes. There's a reason junior handlers don't compete (as opposed to show) dogs under 12 months old. He'll need another dog for handlers initially.

in NZ child and junior handlers are fine taking under 12 month olds in the ring.. have seen a few kids take pups in and do rather well with them.. he will be given the chance to try with her just like he would with any other dog.. if it doesnt work out for him with her as a pup then we will look into something else.. maybe borrow one of the breeders bigger dogs who knows..

but thanks for your suggestion.
