Prag Posted April 7, 2011 Share Posted April 7, 2011 Hi guys, I was hoping that perhaps a few of you may have some knowledge of and experience with a reputable vet that is located in or close to Glenroy in VIC. I previously lived on St Kilda Rd and was taking my Sheltie to Port Philip Animal Hospital in Middle Park. That is now a bit to far to travel so would prefer to find a local vet that has a good reputation and one that people have good experiences with. I would also appreciate any information about dog parks that are located in or close to Glenroy. I would prefer a park that had a few people and dogs there so Raiden can have some dog to dog socialisation time. He does enjoy playing with other dogs and he will miss Fawkner Park so I really would like to find one that is close by so he can make some new friends! Pretty Miss Emma Posted April 8, 2011 Share Posted April 8, 2011 I'm in Glenroy and we travel to Essendon to go to the vet. I use Moonee Valley Animal Hospital on Keilor Rd (opposite the Shell and Red Rooster) - I love Dean and Jenn and all my animals do too. I've also had good dealings with the Essendon Vet Clinic on Buckley St (where Jean's Puppy Pre-School runs out of). A friend uses Strathmore vet which I think is on Napier St. There are also some near by that I would steer clear of, but PM me if you'd like to know which. I don't know about the one in Glenroy shops, have walked past but never seen anyone there and don't know anyone that uses them. As for parks - we are severly lacking good off leash park space!! The parks I've used in the eastern part of Glenroy I don't really go to now because I found there was too much broken glass etc, so we stick to the western side of Pascoe Vale Rd. There are the wetlands (northern part near the Fwy is on-leash). Along Moonee Ponds Creek it is apparently off-leash and it is nice and open and green - there is a bike path running through (so one of my girls can't go off-lead there!!), sometimes there are other dogs, have had a few issues with dogs that have been let out of yards to take themselves for a walk unsuppervised (but this isn't often and usually it is just barking - still unwelcomed though), can do a really nice long walk along there. Gervase Ave park is off-leash - large area, we walk through there every day with no fuss, does have a sort of busy road beside it and no fence. Otherwise there aren't a lot more parks unless you head to Oak Park and Strathmore or up to Broadmeadows Park. I can't remember the name of the park that is in Strathmore but it is just near the trestle railway bridge and there are often dogs there. There is also a circuit around the Broadmeadows wetlands that is fantastic but it can't really be used until they finish the freeway works! If you're prepared to go for a little drive head to the Maribyrnong, Moonee Ponds - the river circuit there is about 4km or so, there are at least 2 off leash parks along the way, the off leash park near Poyntons usually has other dogs playing there and is often busy on weeksends (outside of cricket/soccer match times). I use the Greenvale vet which is close for me, but for a Vet that is really good try Fawkner Vet Clinic on Sydney Road. (opposite the Fawkner cemetry entrance). Ask for Dr Tony, people from all around Victoria go to see him, he has a really good reputation and lovely man. Plus because they are not in an expensive area, the prices are really really good! As for socialising, I would be able to come and meet up with you, I have 2 lovely dogs that love playing with new doggy friends! What is your dogs name and breed? A Sheltie? Have you heard of Kepala? Its about a 40 min drive from us, but there is a DOL meet there every month and its in a secure enclosed area with lots of friendly dogs and people, have a look in the DOL Events section. Prag Posted April 12, 2011 Author Share Posted April 12, 2011 Thank you both Pretty Miss Emma & Lindainfa for the info you have given me I will definitley be tring to visit all those parks and seeing which ones Raiden likes he is my Sheltie and is now 1 year old. Lindainfa yeah I am up for meeting up sometime to let the dogs play, Raiden is very friendly and loves having new friends! I have added you as a friend so we can get in touch and tee something up. I will also be looking into the montly meeting for DOL members as that would be really cool and I'm sure Raiden would absolutely love it! Pretty Miss Emma, thanks for you info on the vets I will most likely try the one in Essendon. I will defintley be trying the one on Gervase Ave as soon as the weather clears up as I live on Finchley Ave so close by. I will also be private messaging you shortly to find out which vets to stay away from. If you are open to meeting up and letting the dogs play together at the park let me know. Do you ever take your dogs to Woodlands? I someetimes head up there, not off leash but makes for a nice walk in the bush on a nice day (not like today!!!). This is where we were yesterday!! Kenzie got to play with about 5 other dogs - of course they didn't understand her game, they wanted a bit of rough and tumble and she kept looking at them as if to say "hey, chase me!". Not sure if I was on the right side as I woudl not find the Anglers tavern but there were quite a few dogs about. I was near the golf course, Tennis courts and the soccer fields, I basically came straigh down Newsom Rd. It was awesome that they had the flood lights on because that allowed Raiden and I to stay there a bit longer when it was getting dark. Also if you head further upstream (so go right instead of left - near the Boathouse) are the other ovals where there are lots of dogs. It's a bit of a drive but they love it there!!! Both Moonee Valley and Maribyrnong councils seem to have better facilites in terms of dog parks than Moreland. We have one of the worst councils in terms of provision of resources for pet owners. Prag Posted May 2, 2011 Author Share Posted May 2, 2011 Hey guys, Not sure if you guys know about the off leash park called Kingsford Smith Ulm Reserve and Boeing Reserve they join together, there is a place to park the car on Boeing Rd. There are huge fields for the dogs to run around. I have seen a few there but not heaps. There is also a nice track that runs along that river that provides an eenjoyable walk. For those that are local we should organise a time to head down there so out dogs can have a run around together. I also went to Fawkner Vet Clinic on Sydney Road and asked for Dr Tony, he seemed nice and what he gave me has cleared up Raiden's rash so I'm happy. Thanks again for all your help and if you ever see a guy with a shaven head and tattooes walking a Sheltie around Glenroy or nearby it is probably me so stop me and say Hello!
