This forum was a fantastic information base and really helped us in deciding on the right puppy to bring into our home. After more than two years of research and a few months of puppy proofing our home we finally brought home our little Rottweiler puppy two weeks ago at the age of 8 weeks. He is an amazing puppy and comes from 100% German bloodlines - with many in his line being titled Shutzhund dogs. This is really evident in the little guy who has extremely strong drive - even at his young age! Given this, I thought that it would be a great idea to start to get involved in Shutzhund and to talk to a club to see how to get our puppy ready for eventually starting this type of training.. but am struggling to find any details of clubs close to Canberra. We are more that willing to travel (within a few hours), but the only club that we can find is the Illawarra & Districts Shutzhund Assoc. It would be great if someone could provide any info on clubs in close-ish vicinity to Canberra. If not, does anyone have experience in training their puppy in the basic principals of Shutzhund (perhaps not bite work) based on information gained from books, DVD's etc? I really think that keeping him stimulated with challenging training will ensure that he grows to be a stable and health dog! Thanks in advance of any responses! Erny Posted May 24, 2011 Share Posted May 24, 2011 (edited) to DOL Schutzhund Training is an absolutely excellent discipline - for not only the dogs but for the handlers as well. Sadly and IMO VERY WRONGLY, the Schutzhund sport and discipline has been banned in Victoria. I'm not sure what the stance is for NSW - hopefully the folks up there aren't like a number of those down here who have poo-poo'd the training regime for their own personal and political reasons and have managed to persuade our Government to rule against it. Sucks that they did . Good luck - I hope you find a Schutzhund Club to go to. Congrats on your new pup - enjoy :D. Nekhbet Posted May 24, 2011 Share Posted May 24, 2011 http://www.schutzhundaustralia.com/ contact them about it, there may be at least a trainer if not a club close to you As or training at the moment you want to work on bonding with the pup, having a lt of fun with the pup particularly with rags and little tug toys. Do not tug while the pup is teething though as the pain can accidentally put a pup off. You can start some basic obedience with food and prey rewards plus socialise the hell out of the dog to make sure it really does not care about anything but you when outdoors What experience do you have with working and sportdogs up until now? So far we have been spending every minute working on bonding with little Arnie, as well as working on basic obedience. He's doing really well with it and has picked up the basics of sit, down, come (most of the time) and is well on his way to being toilet trained (only the occasional accident - mostly due to us not reading his signs). Nekhbet - I have some practical experience in training working dogs to herd (we run a small farm with cattle and sheep) but no experience with Shutzhund. The idea of books and DVD's are more to get my head around the sport and to understand the basics in order to work on the simpler things with my pup I definitely will need a LOT of help though, so I'll get in contact with Shutzhund Australia and hopefully they can point me in the right direction! Echo Posted May 24, 2011 Share Posted May 24, 2011 Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new pup. I hope you can locate a club or good trainer who can guide you in Sch. training. Contacting Sch. Australia, as Nekhbet said, is a good place to start. Failing that, I would highly recommend the DVD's by Ivan Balabanov. The best ones for you at the moment are "The Game" and "Obedience Without Conflict". Since I live in the backward state of Victoria, I have trouble getting access to suitable training on a regular basis. I have found these two videos to be very helpful in demonstrating the basics that you need for this sport. They are not cheap, but they are very good. On my interest on the research doing is for finding nice Rottweiler or the Rottweiler has best promise on the Schutzhund job? Is very difficult finding Rottweiler with right drives for the sport compared with Belgian Malinois, or good German Shepherd Dog just interested in the selection of Rotty for this job from the Schutzhund researching? Nekhbet Posted May 24, 2011 Share Posted May 24, 2011 balabanov and Leerburg DVDs are very useful when you're starting out Joe there still are a few people about that breed working rotties, I've seen a couple when I was in NSW and gee are they different to the show rotts! With all due respect Erny, I think you will find that "Schutzhund" is not named as being a 'banned' activity in Victoria. The wording in the dangerous dog act makes it difficult to participate in one of the phases of the sport but the sport in general is not named at all. In fact, the only mention of the word "schutzhund" is in relation to an exemption to parts of the dangerous dog act for imported GSD's with Schutzhund titles and that's a bonus really. Re: SchH in Canberra - sorry no clubs in or near Canberra. Closest are in Syd - 2 with AUSC http://www.sportdogaustralia.com/ and 1 with SA http://www.schutzhundaustralia.com/ As far as I know the SA club is not very active anymore but you would have to check with them. My friend used to train there and said that they have hardly trained at the club for over two months and active members at training were very low.
