DOG owners have been warned to remain vigilant for symptoms of the deadly parvovirus after a recent breakout in western Sydney.

St Marys Vet Hospital vet Kitty Cheung said about 15 dogs with parvovirus had been brought to the clinic in the last three months and the Australian Veterinary Association has warned it is a high-risk area.

"If people don't keep vaccinations up to date, there is a high risk of contamination," Dr Cheung said.

"Get primary vaccinations for puppies and older dogs need up-to-date and regular vaccinations."

Parvovirus is highly contagious and spread by oral or nasal contact with contaminated faeces, a contaminated environment or contaminated objects.

The virus can survive and be spread on clothing, shoes and the floor for five months or longer.

"We always tell people to keep vaccinations up to date, especially puppies - it is preventable through vaccination," Dr Cheung said.

She said dogs often spread the virus to each other and was more prevalent during spring and summer.

If owners suspect their dogs have parvovirus, Dr Cheung said the sooner they acted, the better.

"They need to get the dog to a vet quickly and get it sorted out," she said.

Australian Veterinary Association spokesman David Neck said young puppies and dogs that have never been vaccinated are susceptible to the effects of the virus with death in around 80 per cent of untreated cases.

Dr Cheung said parvovirus symptoms included vomiting, bloody diarrhoea and lethargy.
