Toilet Training For My 8 Week Old Cavalier

argh...sorry guys for another toilet training questions...but i just can't seem to be able to train my 8 week cavalier to peein one spot! Though we have generally isolated it to the kitchen...

We had previously been using training pads...but teh problem with those are...he chews on them if we just leave them on the ground...My mum also bought a cat litter container...which he is using for play rather than for toileting reasons...We live in an apartment so there's really not much choices of places where he can pee except the kitchen...(bathroom is no good.)

I know we shouldn't be expecting much cos he's only young but i think we really need a kick start of suggestions from you experts...

maybe take him/her outside every 1/2 hr and say "wee wees" when your out there... you have to be patient and consistent and keep doing this...

or you can buy those fake grass squars and have them on your balcony... for the pup to piddle/poo on??

I haven't toilet trained a puppy but this method has worked for over 40 dogs in the last 3 years that I've fostered.

HOUSETRAINING TIPS

Ok - first thing to do is decide on the command (I call it “do wees”) you will repeat over and over. You have to really focus on the dog for about 2-3 days to be successful. You have a pocketful of special treats on hand all the time for the first 2-3 days.

Walk the dog several times a day and every time the dog wees, you get very excited and keep saying “Good boy/girl, do wees, do wees” – give the dog treats every time.

First thing in the morning, last thing at night and every time you see the dog eat or drink (both precursors to weeing) whisk the dog into the garden and repeat the command “do wees”. Get very excited and present treats every time dog goes.

The dog’s aim in life is to please you. If the dog should have an accident inside the house – say NOTHING at all. The dog soon gets the idea that when he/she goes outside you are really, really pleased and he/she gets rewarded.

Oh and the portable toilet option is excellent. I rehomed a foster to an apartment with one of those on the balcony last weekend, he went straight to it and did the right thing!!
