Dog Sports Brisbane

 Share

Recommended Posts

as i'll be heading back to aus shortly, i'd like to get involved in dog sports more with lucy.

i did a little agility with her (at the rspca) and she absolutely loved it so wouldn't mind starting that again with her, but would like to find somewhere closer to home that's cheaper that will also cater for her.

she has bad hips, so can't do full height jumps (well she probably could and would, but i don't want her injured) so would just like to train using smallest height jumps which i know she can cope with physically. which also means i know we can't compete (which i would of loved to have done with her as she was a natural at most of the equipment)

i'm located in camp hill, which is near carindale.

i'm also interested in finding an obedience club nearby, and maybe some other doggy sports.

i don't have a car anymore, but my parents would probably lend me their car for these things until i can buy my own but would prefer not to travel too far.

Carebear, I didnt realise you were headed back to Brisbane, I thought you were over there for the foreseeable future?

Anyway there is an agility school at Clem Jones Park (Carina Leagues club) which run (from memory) on a Wednesday night. You have to enroll in a beginners class & the places are limited & they use all positive methods. The website is here http://www.badclub.org.au/

There is also Qld Agility & Jumping dog club which is run from the Mt Gravatt showgrounds on Thurs nights. Website is here http://users.bigpond.net.au/lest.agy/Training.htm

As for obedience, Im not sure what would be your closest, Im just on the other side of the Gateway from you & we go to Redlands (which is off Old Cleveland Rd at Birkdale/Capalaba) as thats closest for us, most of the clubs are not near the city, the only 2 others I could suggest would be Southside (which is at Runcorn) or Metro which is at Chermside - both probably no closer than Redlands.

Hope that helps.

ETA Redlands does do some agility as well, more a fun thing than really serious like those 2 clubs I mentioned above, I think they train Tuesday nights for agility (Wed for obedience & Friday for trialling), so that may be worth thinking about.

mrs d, martin and i broke up a couple of weeks ago so i will be back in bris within a month i think (depends on if dad can get me on mum's flight home or not)

out of those clubs you listed mrs d, redlands would probably be closest i think. do they charge much for classes? (am not wanting to go back to rspca, cause i need a check chain on lucy, not for teaching the obedience stuff, but for her agression. was the only thing that stopped it as i can now socialise her on a flat collar!!)

thanks for the links borda, what's involved in frisbee?

Carebear, sorry to hear about you & Martin, but glad you are getting it sorted out to get home :( .

Redlands is a $5 joining fee & then $15/year for membership & $3/night training fees. No problems with using a check chain there if you need/want to, most of the trialling members use either a check or martingale, classes start the first Wed of each month with a "dog-free" information evening about the club, ways of training etc. If you want to look at their website its http://www.geocities.com/redlandsdoc/index.html

We find it a very friendly club, lots of people to help if you need it, if you do make it down look out for me in the second set of classes (class 1 & 2 are at 6.30pm, class 3 & 4 are at 7.30pm). Just look for my 2 boys, there is only one other sheltie there & its a tri colour bitch not a sable dog (she knows me anyway so will head you in the right direction :( ) & no other kelpies, so Im fairly easy to spot, if you cant see me, just ask, most people in those top classes know me :D .

as i was doing advanced obedience with lucy a while ago, would they assess us and put us in the right level? she's not so good at heeling, but generally good at the rest of the stuff. (mind you, if my parents haven't been working with her on stuff at all, then she's probably crap now lol)

ah but do they know you as mrs d??? lol

:( nahhh just ask for the one with the sheltie & the kelpie, as I said Im the only one there, most of the longterm members & instructors etc know me :( .

You will still have to attend the first night induction, but if she actually does still work ok you should be able to get someone to look at you & put you in a suitable class. Just explain that you have trained her before & ask for the OIC (her name's Lorraine) & she should be able to help you.

sounds good. looks like i might be able to start up in june as i'll be back in may some time.

June is good as if you join up then they will give you 13 months membership (usually 1st July - 30th June, but they add the extra month ) :( .

yup i just read that on their website.

looking at what each level class does, we were doing stuff out of levels 3 and 4.

wouldn't mind starting at level 1 and working up tho cause then we can get ribbons lol plus she probably needs to relearn some things anyway

Yeah if she's been out of it for a while it probably wont hurt her to start in class 1 again anyway - at least you're pretty sure of an elevation at the end of each month :( .

When I started Jarrah I just took him down on the last Wed of the month for elevations & we went straight to Class 2 :D .

Anyway come down when you get back & see what you think & decide if you will be happy training there & you can take it from there :( .

thanks for the links borda, what's involved in frisbee?

if your dog loves to fetch then it will love frisbee, there are two types of competition toss & fetch / freestyle, check out the website, toss and fetch you throw the disc if the dog catches it it you score points depending on how far out he catches if he catches with all 4 feet of the ground u score an extra 1/2 point, they hold training clicnics around brisbane at various off leash parks cost is minimal very relaxed atmosphere, i think this sport would be great for dogs who love to play fetch but don't always get along with other dogs as it is just you and your dog working at any given time.

sounds like something lucy would LOVE!! she absolutely loves playing fetch and was always a natural at it! she always brings it back to me and would play all day if she could. i practiced similar with tennis balls getting her to catch it before it touches the ground, making the distance longer and longer.

OK carebear, watch out for me too, I'll try to get there a little early so Im hanging around when your class finishes. I'm not sure if the kids or Eddie will be with me - is state of origin on this Wednesday or next? Anyway if it's on, they wont be there  .

And just as an aside, we went to frisbee on Sunday, the dogs & the kids had a ball - what a fun sport! :worship:

Bordercollies4me, were you there?

origin is next week. i thought it was this week and was about to make plans lol then i read the tv guide and it's not on lol

who do i find when i get there?

It's first night, so you get an introductory talk by one of the trainers, I forgot about that, so you may want to leave Lucy at home as you wont actually be doing any training. Of course you can bring her if you like, there isnt anything to say you can't, some people bring their dogs for the socialisation, but sometimes it's easier to listen to the person if you arent having to watch your dog all the time :D .

When you get to the club (you enter from the end of Bailey Rd, NOT off Old Cleveland Rd East like it says on their website) you drive in the driveway & you will see a large clubhouse (Redlands Sporting Club I think) on the right hand side. Keep going & you will see a small tin shed on the left on the edge of the field, that's the clubhouse for dog obedience. Just park & go up to the window that faces the field (no dogs at window) & tell them that it's your first night & you want to join etc. There will be plenty of new people there, so they'll be expecting people that arent sure whats going on or what to do :) . You'll see a circle of stools that they put out for the newbie's talk just over near the rings that are set up, thats where you should head after you've seen them at the window.

If you are having problems getting there or getting home & want to come, give us a yell & we'll see if we can organise a lift - you'll just have to wait around afterwards as we dont finish until about 8.30pm.
