What To Do When Your Rushed By A Dog?
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Lisey's topic in General Dog Discussion
When there is more than one of you, what my partner and I do is one of us takes the dogs (usually me) and the other (usually OH) advances on the rushing dog. That way one of us can concentrate on keeping our own dogs out of the way, and the other can concentrate on dealing with the rushing dog. The question of who at the owner of the dog is decided later  -
Kids Creche At Shows To Help Boost Entry Numbers
SkySoaringMagpie replied to just1more's topic in General Dog Discussion
As rebelsquest notes, there would be insurance/liability issues. And some show people are pretty litigious. One thing i have seen work well, is activities for kids with prizes. It's not the same thing as child care but it at least gives the kids something to do and if they are busy doing that they are not busy getting into mischief. The ACT Junior Kennel Club did an awesome job with the kids at its December shows last year, with lots of fun things to do like making white christmas and colouring in. I don't underestimate the amount of volunteer work involved in putting that together tho', and many committees struggle to get people to do the basics of running a show. From what I've seen, people with kids often "buddy up" and take turns watching each others kids. -
Showing Dogs With Structural Faults
SkySoaringMagpie replied to Topoftheheap's topic in General Dog Discussion
By major structural fault you mean a medical condition that without medical intervention means that the dog is lame or would quickly become lame if worked at its original purpose? We're excluding from this dogs that might be a bit cow-hocked or have a straight front or flat feet etc etc? The options you have don't fit the considerations I would apply, but like Diva one thing I wouldn't do is show a dog after surgery that arose not from injury or disease, but its birth conformation. Because that's cheating. Would I show a dog whose hocks were a bit high or whose feet were a bit loose? Yes, providing its other attributes were of sufficient quality to mean that the overall picture was one of quality. No dog is perfect. If you're up against a dog that has been surgically altered I think you make a quiet note not to use it yourself and you wait for time to take care of it while doing your best to beat it. Because it's extremely unlikely that you will ever have the proof needed to prove a formal complaint. And it really is a put up or shut up kind of thing, while there are dogs that are surgically altered there are also a lot of sour exhibitors. -

Thinking about this after the thread on breed misidentification. When I'm out walking or at an Aggie show where the punters are walking around I sometimes get asked what my dogs are. I say they are Salukis and if I get a blank look then I say "You know how greyhounds are the sprinters of the dog world? Well, Salukis are the cross country runners". That usually keeps people happy. I occasionally resort to "greyhounds with ponytails" when talking to kids, but as a smooth owner I always feel a bit guilty about that shorthand. So what's your quick explanation? I have learned to keep it really short, as attention spans are short, and given many peoples issues with all things Arab, I don't get into the country of origin unless the person clearly wants to chat. Weirdly enough there is something about the name that makes many people think they are Japanese. EFS

Breed Misidentification
SkySoaringMagpie replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in General Dog Discussion
Alkhe: Occam's razor, people. Bah! This is one of my frustrations with it, together with disregarding expert advice when it is given. I agree with Mita and Haredown that a dog can look like pure breed when it is a mix, and that you can't guarantee it's pure breed unless you have the papers. It bothers me tho' when people aren't clear about what is most likely, and what is almost certainly not there. I would rather see Heinz allowed back in to listings for rescue with a decent description of the temperament. Alyosha: I do think that shelters or rescues sticking blindly to their flawed breed descriptions can be unfair to purchasers/adopters. I recall when I worked in a shelter a tiny Pom female coming in, heavily in whelp. She had two pups within days, which were subsequently advertised as purebred Pomeramians, and generted much interest, and lists of people wanting to adopt. All well and good. Except the babies were much bigger than Poms at only 6 weeeks old, and clearly not purebred, heavy heads, big bone etc. So it's anyone's guess how big they ended up. So almost false advertising. It's like the story of the shelter that was convinced they had an Azawakh a couple of years ago, or the grizzle/domino sort of colored crossbreds that get called Saluki crosses when it is hghly unlikely. staff get keen on googling breeds, which is fine. But if they advertise and sell dogs as a certain breed I think it's unfair. The habit people have of identifying breeds in crosses by colouration really bugs me. If it's black masked tan its a Mastiff x, even if t's less than knee high etc etc. Colour genetics is hideously complicated business. You need to discount colour and have a look at some structural features which are often a little more conclusive. This sums up a lot of my concerns too. raineth: that's true in my experience too. People are very disatisfied when there is no breed attached to a dog! I'm always amazed when people ask me what Digby is (I always say a 'dog'). Then they say what sort of a dog and i say "a good dog". Then they but what breed? and I say no, no breed, he's a mutt. And they start squirming, and repeat, but what breed, what breed? It's so strange. I can't seem to convey that he doesn't belong to a breed. I love the bolded bit. You also touch on the thing I find puzzling about it. If you ask any armchair expert they will say that pure breeds are bad and mixed or cross are better. But those same people are often obsessed with breed, and the more exotic the better. It's a kind of double think that I find it hard to get my head around. -
Maiden Bitch And Breeder! Please Help
SkySoaringMagpie replied to The-Fat-Labrador's topic in Breeders Community
Just a quick comment on the age of bitches, in my breed if you breed a bitch at 2 or below you'll be shot at dawn, 2-4 is considered kind of young but OK with compelling reasons, and over 4 is the standard approach used by many. We also breed older bitches (eg 8 or 9) that are healthy. This has a lot to do with the breed being slow to develop and lacking tests for genetic conditions. So what is considered the right age in one breed doesn't necessarily translate to other breeds. Assume it's a lab, so for the answer to "the best window for breeding a lab bitch" I would go to other lab breeders for advice. Wishing you all the best for the next time around. -
Have had a couple of experiences where people felt sure they had a [specific breed] dog through rescue, but the dog clearly is not pure, and probably not even a mix of that breed. When corrected by someone with breed expertise, they have rejected the assessment even if it's allegedly a 24 inch "Wolfhound" or a breed variety where there are only about 15 in the country, all tightly held. Normally my reaction to breed misidentification is to correct it and then let it slide if they persist, who cares? In rescue tho' holding a dog out to be a breed or a breed mix that it clearly is not, can create problems. And some punters don't want some mixes, and that is their right. In their shoes I also wouldn't want some mixes. I suppose I also wonder why a dog being a specific breed is so important or attractive to people who don't want to get [specific breed] from a breeder or breed rescue. Before this descends into DOL whacking of the unwashed, I don't think there is much to be gained by doing the snotty pure bred thing, but I really find it hard to get my head around people who are sure that there is an unlikely exotic breed in a mixed breed rescue despite expert advice to the contrary. So how do you deal with it?

You can't get NSW schedules free like you can in other states. However, the vast majority of NSW shows are on OzEntries. Not all, but most. I would look there.

A Question Regarding Dq And Ethics
SkySoaringMagpie replied to angelsun's topic in General Dog Discussion
I guess my question is whether our opinions count for anything? Colour wars in breeds are rarely pretty, and some people get off on stirring the pot. I think the best course would be to ignore it and assume the locals are smart enough to keep putting stuff in the ring that is good enough to beat it. -
I think this depends a bit on the state you are in. In NSW the majority of shows are on OzEntries which makes late entries a cinch - if it's open on OzEntries, you just enter there without having to phone anyone. I also agree with the person who said just send them if you have to snail mail them. If you do want to ring first, open with a short apology and keep the phone call polite and brief - don't tell a huge story, either it's at a point in the cataloguing where they can take it or it isn't. A long winded catalogue of disasters that prevented you from sending the entries usually tends to irritate rather than engender sympathy. And then make sure that you put it in the post the very next day. I agree with brentland that it's a pain when people don't follow through. Final comment, I usually leave entries open until I catalogue, but the last show we did had a limit on numbers for one of the judges so I closed a few days after the official closing date. This caught a few people by surprise, so if the show is really important to you, get those entries in on time :) Personally I'm not sure how clubs can leave it up to a week or less before a show, because if a cheque bounces it's a pain if the person has already shown the dog/s.

Everyone has their ethics questioned at some point, that's just life in dogs. The key point at issue is whether your practices stand up to reasonable questioning or not. There are people who sell on mains to people that everyone else will not sell to, and that is not something you could describe as being in the dogs' best interests. And yes there are people that will not sell on main to God himself but that doesn't make selling on main to anyone who comes along some kind of virtue. It's just a signal, among all the other signals out there about which breeders you can envisage buying from and which you cannot.

Another folder person here, I have separate file folders for each dog that have their registration details, medical records, council reg and challenge certs. I have a small pile of challenge certs here on the table that I need to file, but I rarely let it go beyond a month before getting stuff up to date.
-
All of our dogs have been bought on main register, including the first two who were purchased as companions. It does depend a lot on the breed and the breeder, or did back then. The two dogs in question were bought for $450 and $650 so it wasn't about charging a motza. Breeders prefix listing, it depends a bit whether the Dogs SA listing is opt in or opt out. If breeders have to nominate to be listed, well I haven't nominated to be listed in the DogsNSW journal because I figure most readers of the journal will already have a view if they are interested in my breed. My advertising to the general public for companion homes is my website and DOL listing. I do know a couple of breeders who make a selling point of the fact that they sell unrestricted on the main register, ie, other breeders will ask you to comply with conditions, I won't, buy from me. Each individual has to work out what they think about that, I think there is a happy medium between "I don't care what you do with the dog" and "The dog is not to take a shit without my say so" and most breeders don't sit at either extreme.

Thanks SSM, really appreciate your time to post these results and hope you did well yourself today, with your guys. The only Greycroft bitch I think entered at the show (to my knowledge)would have been Ch Greycroft Annika - if so, well done to Sue Lewington. OK, just checked catalogue and you're right so it must have been her. The South Australians definitely doing well today, congrats! Have to make a full confession here, our Wolfie Spec catalogue is unmarked - eep! Hopefully someone else has the R/BIS and challenge results. -
