  1. please do NOT just go to a pound and get a "mature dog" . Lord knows what problems/illnesses etc you will be bringing home.

You don't sound very experienced - what dogs have you had before?

Taking aside the dog-inexperience: what's wrong with taking a mature dog home from the pound?! Your comment about bringing home potential 'problems/illnesses' makes it sound like you should avoid pounds all together! :( Plenty of amazing, wonderful (and healthy!) mature dogs that need homes in pounds, so with advice and a steep learning curve there's nothing wrong with it!

  2. got a home for him down here ready and waiting with one of the most experienced people in the country with working dogs.

I have PMd you the contact he wants the dog ASAP. Loving home guarenteed he's a dear friend of mine and treats dogs better then most people treat their children.

    Fantastic outcome!

  3. do you need help to pay the ongoing vet costs? I am happy to send some dollars. Do not be ashamed to ask.

Thank you Anne and others who have offered financial help you are all amazing

My vet on hearing that this woman has refused to pay did not charge me for the visit today. I have a wonderful friend who is a nurse at my vets and will give Maddie any out of hours care she needs so fingers crossed there are no major complications we should be ok.

How nice of your vet to not charge you since the stupid woman is refusing to pay additional costs, and how lovely of fellow DOLers to offer assistance! :) You guys rock!

HazyWal hope your girl feels better soon!

  4. I would not risk any dog, but especially not a Dobe roaming unfenced acerage. It is irresponsible.

Many dogs will roam at night kill livestock and be home in time for you to get up in the morning.

I think allowing a Dobe to roam acerage is totally irresponsible and stupid.

Yes Dobes are wonderful dogs, yes they are intelligent. At the end of the day they are dogs and you are dicing with her life should you choose to let her roam free.

I would get rid of the chain and tiny dog house and build her something that keeps her safe and is more suitable.

Reminds me of a potential home for a rescue dog for a house on a couple of acres on the outskirts of Sydney. I did the house inspection at night and was taken out back to meet their current dog. I wasn't that impressed when I asked about the missing kennel and they told me that she just slept on the rug by the back door, and when mentioned that they would need to provide something more substantial for the younger pup they were considering they seemed to dismiss this because 'she'll be right' and there was a boundary fence on the property so it was all good. Anyway it wasn't a very positive meeting and even more so when I went around the house to realise that there was absolutely no fence between the road and their property, and their current dog was free to roam everywhere, except chose to hangout by the back door and not being let inside. :(

  5. Poor you and your dogs for having to go through that!! How unpleasant! :( Glad to hear your girl is back home with you, and Stan is back to his usual self.

Also VERY glad to hear that the attacking-dogs-owner paid the vet bill without any hassle..that's the VERY LEAST that she should be doing!! What about your potential injuries?! :mad

  6. That video seems like an EXACT replica of presentation a dog did on a TV show in the States. I can't find the link but I remember that dog being much tidier in it's moves and more precise...so Omar's training doesn't make the cut for me in this instance.

  7. What breeds of dogs were they?

I was bailed up on my own property once by an aggressive dog who used to hunt roos on my property pretty much every day. When I complained to the council they said I had to catch the dog and tie it up before they would come out. :mad

I don't understand this logic... couldn't the owner come back and create a fuss saying you've "stolen" their dog and are touching 'their property' or something? Seems dubious.

  8. To add insult to injury, changing the date of the euthanasia at the last minute is a low and disgusting act by the authorities.

I find it worrisome as well as sickening that seemingly responsible dog owners with perfectly lovely dogs who have never been involved in an incident, try to do the right thing and then get treated in this manner :(

    You've worded my thoughts!

(Although we don't know if there was additional back story)

  9. Just saw this article...Absolutely horrible!! :( :(

Certainly a reason to NOT be proactive in approaching your local council to do the right thing. And to think that the PTS date was brought foward at the last min... Disgusting.

I wonder if there is more to the story... and whether the owners would have won their case if they had more money behind them. :(

  10. He has gone off he's food.. It's as if he wants to eat but he can't get her out of his head.. I think he doesn't even know what's going on.. He's on this love drug.. I've never seen him like this before, he's usually a placid, easy going dog, so I am hoping he settles with age, it would be his first time with this intensive smell going on..

I actually bought a knickers for her, hoping it would work as a chastity belt like contraption, she does look quite cute in her sexy knickers, maybe that's too much of a turn on for him.. LOL

    Thanks again..

I know you're joking...but you are talking about a dog right?

What breed are they? How old's the boy?

  11. Oh what awful schnauzers, with lots of made up colours that don't exist and some that do but aren't recognised - and as for one cropped ear and one badly falling natural ear......... those who breeds aren;t on there, be glad!

Just because a person has bought a pet dog that isn't correctly marked doesn't mean that they may not want a cartoon of their pet as a bit of fun.

  12. Grab the back legs and pull up and back hard and fast (not just back). If you think you will break the dog's legs you are doing it right. Obviously, some people will not be able to do this and it won't help much if two or more dogs are attacking.

Just watch out for your back when the other dog is latched on so hard you end up trying to haul 2 dogs up into the air...and then you need to keep holding them up until one gives up.

  13. What does it matter if she gave them all good homes? It's not like she's in it for the money. :D

Because the ignorant masses follow lead without researching and are likely to crossbred for the money and not place precedence on finding perfect homes.

  14. Seems it was ineffective one way or the other (dog did seem to ease up on the shrill whining towards end of footage, but who knows why .... could have been that the environment changed - seemed to me the dog didn't really take any or much learning on board), although I can't imagine it helping bonds between handler and dog. And one way or the other, the manoeuvres were quite violent. IMO, just for the way it was repeatedly administrated and with such discord, it gave the impression of the handler being unstable and could well imagine the dog perceiving that as well.

    Exactly.

I still pertain that the man in that situation is an idiot, and the other handler directing him to dominate the dog by 'hold his neck down' and 'stare at him in the eyes' is also not doing a good job.

How many throw downs did that guy attempt whilst the dog maneuvered out (probably as he's been trained to do)?

    Poor form.
