  1. Has anyone given B12 injections??? How is it given?
  2. My 7mo kelpie boy had the snip on Friday....he also had his umbilical hernia repaired! Both with no external stitches! He had a penicilian shot before he came home..... Just last night in checking his wounds I noticed that they are slightly reddened..... not hot, no discharge and is not tender to touch (with disinfected hands....). He is as energetic as ever and is eating the same as always, he doesn't seem in discomfort and was happy for me to have a look and a touch - in fact he seemed to think I was going to scratch it for him. It was the first day he was home unsupervised and I suspect had a great time playing after being kept quiet all weekend. Well as quiet as possible with a kelpie pup... I also notice he keeps trying to lick the where he has been shaved (very little attempt at the wounds) but his elizabethan collar is rubbing over the wounds and could be irittating it! Should I be worried about infection and take a trip to the vet........or give it a good clean with hibitane and put some betadine or detol cream (non-stingy) on it a few times a day and see how it goes over the next 24-48 hours??? What about a melolin wound covering to stop the bucket rubbing???? any advice would be great....thanks guys...... Edited to add that I was suprised the vet didn't recommend washing it with hibitane or similair to keep it clean.....is this to do with the no external stitches???
  3. Oh dear.....happy tears!!! I am so pleased for her.......she has a great mate there too by the looks of it and all those fun things to do! great job Muttley.....keep us updated if you hear anymore how she is doing!
  4. Now that is an oxymoron!!! He is just excited and will soon settle down .......to show off and not only be the most beautiful in class but the smartest too! Mmmm bum flavoured kisses! You are so lucky!
  5. Aussies should be on top....................so bumping! I am gonna brag this......it isn't much but I am so pleased! I haven't done too much with Aniken, just letting him settle in (16 days at home)..... But I taught him to "shake" hands in about 2 minutes......now he shakes each hand and will swap when you tell him to "Other hand" and will happily go back and forth one to the other until he gets too excited and tries to shake both at once.....which may lead me into "high 5" and "high 10" And the real brag is......he is so clever, I have been trying to teach Anzac (7mo kelpie) this for over 2 months and he still looks at me like I am daft......and Aniken got it in 2 minutes! geeee aussies are so clever!
  6. Well he is now trying to mark everything in the house....even lifting his leg on the walls. Although none of my stuff or me....(he peed on OH's pillows - dragged em off the bed and "claimed" them) So tomorrow, Friday Aug 3, he is off to the vet for a snip snip!!
  7. He is doing great.....thanks t-time Whether the acidophilus tablets kicked in or its all psycological but I worked out that he will eat anything if he thinks he is stealing it from another dog..... So I put out 4 extra bowls with his meal spread over the 4 of them and spread them around the room and he is happy to go around and eat them all! Takes him 30 minutes. The other dogs finish their dinner and get their bowls licked clean also... Although not ideal I am happy that he is eating.......and without any cat food! Although every other day I chuck a bit in just to use up whats in the cupboard. And this weekend I am making satin balls. I am so proud......in 2 weeks my little thin non-eating bubba has become a eating machine.....and he has gained nearly 3kg in 2 weeks!
  8. The recipe I have for satin balls asks for 400g jar wheatgerm Ok i can find this in the cereal aisle but not in a jar. Can you get liquid wheatgerm? Where from?
  9. ..........stupid........but but ummmm! Aussies are superkewl! Shame on you!
  10. Mmm I seem to have a good mix of them... Anzac (7mo kelpie) is very high prey/play drive but low food drive Sarg (elderly lab) was always high food drive and low prey/play drive ........now he has high couch drive!!! Diesel (2yo bc) is low drive in both...but is a highly affectionate dog. Aniken.....still working out (only 10 days home) but seems he will be slightly food drive but is definately low on prey/play drive. And in having the mix I can say that the training is very different for all of them and I can see why they would have different training sessions for low and high drive dogs! Anzac I loose his attention after 30 sec or so....so training has to be fun and short and somehow involving play (just to get his interest). He is full on all the time! Its all about getting his focus! Aniken (and Sarg was) could have longer training sessions with food treats as the motivator (cheese and kabana....yummo). And more serious training....happy to do lots of healing (or turn inside out/upside down) if it means they get the yumba! For these two their food drive it is a lot less intense than Anzac's high prey/play drive but probably easier to focus and get results. Diesel isn't into either....and I would say is a very low drive dog....but will work for cuddles and affection, he seems to glow with just a pat on the head. He won't eat treats and he doesn't like to play.......in fact he withdraws and shuts down if you offer either! Nothing really gets him revved up and ready to go....so training is very different with him as his motivation comes from within. I find that often Diesel is intimidated by the higher drive dogs...especially the super driven dog Anzac. Keeping them seperated for training is ideal. He would not be able to work around a crazed kelpie racing around the agility course......but a more quiet setting and lots of people interaction and he is happy to do what is asked. Dunno if this is helped.....I guess its a matter of finding their motivator and what un-motivates them.
  11. Yesturday driving home from the shops, on my country road, I passed a red faced annoyed women whistling and calling. I slowed figuring there was a cheeky naughty dog running about somewhere. Sure enough around the bend a boxer ran out from a property dragging his lead. He ran passed my very slow moving car and stopped in front of the car. I stopped to get out and grab him.....before he ran off again. When he suddenly dropped to the ground as if scratching his back and then collapsed in a heap. Unfortunately he was gone before the owner managed to run up to us. I explained what happened and assuring her that I didn't hit him. I found out he was 8yo and had been out for his daily jog, which he apparantly loved! I guess his heart just gave out...... So sorry that you went little man......but at least you were doing what you loved and were happy. RIP :D
  12. He is booked in for 3rd of August..........
  13. He is sent marking territory, sounds like your dogs are having pecking order dispute. If he has been losing this dispute then this type of behaviour can occur. Have they been having any fights between them selves? If so what have you done at this time? This type of urinating can also be a sign of stress. Mabe your idea of which dog should be top dog is different to theirs. Did he do this when you were there or when you were out? What did you do when you found out he had done this? Can you tell me also what type of corrections you have been using on him when he has been naughty. What exactly has he been a brat.... about? More info needed please. He has been brat......see this thread http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=107557 There has been slight grumblings in the pack order but the lab is still the boss......controls them with just "a look" and even when Anzac is playing zoomies, he won't go near him but is happy to run into the other dogs and bite them. I stay out of the dogs heirachy and let them sort it out.... The dog that he peed on, used to be No 2 but I think the kelpie now is.....if Anzac jumps on the dog couch the border collie gets off. But maybe you are right and he is feeling insecure as another pup came home a week ago. The new pup is the same age but has been delegated the bottom of the order....makes me feel bad that I got mad at him....and he may have been feeling insecure. I caught him doing it every time last night.....the old "when it goes quiet he is up to something"......I growled at him, tried time out which just hyped him up more and the last time I caught him I was a mean mum and smacked him on the bum. (waiting for the flaming)........that stopped him, think it shocked him more than anything (sure did hurt my hand a lot more than it did him)......I have only ever growled at him before...and the rest of the night he lay with the lab and went to sleep. I feel bad it got to that point and thats why I am asking for some help! I did finish the night on a positive and made him do some obedience to work for a treat....
  14. Ok....my bad teenage kelpie has struck again. He turned 7 months old yestuday.......and decided that he would choose that day to pee on all the other dog's things. Peed on their leads and collars (dragged them onto the floor and peed on them) - but not his Peed on 2 of the dogs beds Peed in all 4 dog bowls and in the water bowl (go figure that) And then Peed on the border collie while he was asleep What is going on? I know he has been acting a brat lately but this is the cake.... What should I do?
  15. And remember if the name you want is taken.....you can change the spelling. Believe it or not....but my labs name was taken Sargent Major So I changed the spelling to Sargeant Major and that was fine!!!
  16. Yep it is weird.....I hype my dogs up before a walk so it feels more 'normal'
  17. I would be saying....NO dog park. Before something bad does happen....... If they can spend the time to stand and watch him rough housing maybe they should be spending that time on a brisk walk or get a dog harness and take him on a bike ride.......and then some mind stimulating games at home to help with the boredom. They may also need to work on leadership as it sounds like the dog is running things, especially if they are being soft with him. Its easier said than done, but read the pinned thread on the Triangle. Obedience training should be a must for this dog.......And maybe even see a behaviorist.... He may eventually learn to socialise nicely.....but it will take a lot of work, training and patience!
  18. He is so small and skinny I don't think I have it in my heart to do it. I mean this pup weighs less than my handbag and should weigh a lot more.
  19. great article....He definately sounds like he is in the selective deafness stage.... I have nothing to videotape with (I dont even own a camera)..... He is being fed same time and same place every day......but in trying the triangle I am now seperating the other dogs from him But even when he used to eat at the same time in the same room as the other dogs he would run around zoomies and only grab a mouthful every now and then on the way past until I took up the bowl. When I first got him, he used to steal the other dogs food (the bc) to the point that the bc would spit out a treat for him to take......but for the last month now he just isn't interested in food. A phase maybe? Being silly is much more fun than food.....he is running riot! It has been suggested I put a lead on him inside so I can stand on the end and he cant run backwards to 'not comply' to a sit commend. But I dont see how this help with leadership!
  20. K9 this is fantastic.....wish I knew of it before now. However I can't get my 6mo kelpie to do anything that he should. No matter where I place the food he shows it no interest. I don't feed him for over 24hours...tried 2 days......he would be hungry you say....nope! He is more interested looking around, trying to chew his tail, pulling on the tierope (but pulling away from the food) or as last night went...yawning! If I move the food closer and closer until his nose is almost in it, still no reaction! He isn't usually excited by food or toys.......even treats he sort of takes while looking off in the distance as though he eats them out of habit...and his only drive comes from chasing, anything he can as long as it will move away from him. I need to work on leadership with him as he has hit the 'testing' teenage stage and is choosing not to listen to commands he used to know well. He has gone without attention and very little food for 4 days now as he won't sit (scoots backwards and tries to get me to chase him) and I am trying to get him to earn everything. What could I be doing wrong?
  21. Yeppers he is getting raw meaty bones, chicken wings or chicken carcass for breakfast....1 day he eats it then he doesnt for a day or so....he also gets left dry food which he will pick at. Its his dinner I was asking about......and I wanted him to eat what the others eat which is the cooked mince and vegies with just enough rice to stick it together nicely....they other dogs love it. I have been adding the cat food to tempt him to eat it.....and its only the cat food he eats.....I have also tried sardines, fresh roast chicken etc......but he picks at it. The vet has done tests.......all normal! The vet concerned too (to me he is almost a fur over skeleton) and has wormed him even tho his poo was negative to worms....(and again in 2 weeks) ....and is keeping an eye on him. The vet says there is nothing physically wrong with him to stop him eating... could he just be a picky eater??? ....because if its cheese he scoffs it...but he cant just eat cheese! food allergies?? I have noticed he doesn't poo much but then he doesn't eat much!
  22. He is an aussie......6mo he has had digestive problems seems to have gas (burping) and bad breath (not teeth related), and not ever hungry......vet check was fine, no medical reason, and I have started him on acidophillus bifidus (sp???) tablets to try and help his digestion! The tablets seem to be helping and his breath is much improved and so has his gas! I have been adding the cat food to his dinner as a tempter....he eats the cat food and not the rest. If I mix the two thoroughly so he cant pick the cat food out, he eats nothing at all. If I feed him without the cat food he eats nothing also. He is such a tiny bubba and I am worried when he doesn't eat......From as far back as I remember, I am used to all my dogs and puppies being little piggies!!! The only other food he gets really interested in is cheese and egg beaten in milk....which I find interesting....I wonder if he hasn't got too much acid....and he likes the cheese and milk because don't they help an acid stomach????
  23. Thanks heaps Puggles.....you are a wealth of wonderful knowledge........thank you so very much! I have been trying to feed him 1/2 and 1/2 but he only eats the cat food part.... I might cut it right back to only a spoon full of dog food (mince +rice) and the rest cat food and very gradually increase/decrease to a more reasonable level.... He is also gettin raw meaty bones which he will eat one day and not the next..... I was worried it was dangerous to give him so much cat food....... Thanks heaps, you have put my mind at ease!
  24. I have a puppy and all he wants to eat is cat food (jellymeat and chicken and liver vrty).... He is underweight.....but otherwise happy and healthy...the vet says there is nothing wrong with him. Why is cat food bad for dogs? Will it really be dangerous to give him?
  25. I have had Aniken for 2 hours and he walks beautifully on the lead...such a good boy! Sorry thats all the brag I got for now but I am so excited I had to share!
