Did You Get What You Wanted
whatevah replied to Lablover's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
With Josh I really didn't have any plans perhaps obedience, but he didn't like it, but turned into an excellent flyball dog, he also has a huge drive for retreiving. Moses I picked a line with agility lines, was planning on agility but he really doesn't like it, he has made a really speedy flyball dog and a master at tricks. Next breed I am looking at is a border collie. Love Moses to pieces including his drive, but like to try different breeds. -
If You Were Going To Get Another Dog -
whatevah replied to whatevah's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I learnt heaps from training Josh and passed it onto Moses and he is heaps better but is a different breed of dog. Have been reading Susan Garretts shaping for success and certain things she did with her puppy. Have mainly been really happy with Moses and may train a few things a little bit earlier to create foundations. Moses is worried about getting into a plastic wading pool, so next dog will be trained to get in and out of a plastic wading pool straight away. Moses is also worried about people with a single arm, so will expose next dog to people with their arm not in the sleeve. I have learnt so much mainly from the internet. -
Knowing what you know now, including drive, precision etc, in what way would you change your methods. If you were going to train your dog for agility, obedience, flyball etc.

I am actually thinking of putting Moses in another Novice trial, but this time I won't have the pressure of needing a pass, and see how his performance changes. Might not even hang around for the stays. Also thinking of doing an indoor trial.

I am actually thinking of entering Moses in another Novice trial, just to see how we would go without the pressure of hoping for a pass. Because basically I would be going in with the attitude of who cares. I am even thinking of not even staying for the stays. Also thinking of trying an indoor trial in Novice and seeing what the difference to his performance is? Here is Moses competing in a non VCA trial, it is a club comp. http://www.kintala.com.au

The judge was Greenland, forgotten his first name. Applied for my title today, I wonder if they just liquid paper off the first C in CCD to get CD. At Croydon this lady says, you could have done better, and another says, you should do position change, think of all the points you are losing. I am not in it to win the ring, just for a nice pass. Moses enjoys retrieving.

Here is the video link Will tell you the errors in the heeling so you don't need to point them out to me. Puppy sits as usual, left about turn too wide, I was walking into my dog, going too fast on the turns for him, his sit in fast pace was out at front but you cannot see it. Didn't complete the figure of 8. But did take on board what the judge said, and improved my heeling in the afternoon trial by 4 points. Our scores for this performance. LOL Heeling 30/40 Stand for Exam 29/30 Recall 35/40 Retrieve 26/30 Stays 60/60 Recall was a bit slow and his return to heel was sloppy. Retrieve also slow, and return to heel sloppy. Stand for exam I thought was quite good, maybe lost a point for a crooked stand. But it gives everybody an idea what this sort of performance will get you. But I was happy that Moses was happy. Another thing was that there were discs on the ground and he wanted to check them, if you watch him at the start of the retrieve he is checking out the disc on the ground. It could be food.

I was so nervous yesterday in the trial in the morning, it has been videod and it shows. Bit embarrased to put the video up, because I had people critizing the last obedience one I put up when I only lost 3 points in heeling, and we lost 10 points. Silly things I did in a trial due to nerves. * forgot to bring dumbell in * left the dog for the recall did an about turn and halted but because I halted so quick, I lost my balance, and swayed a bit * exited the ring by jumping over the ropes (twice now) * called dog by call name instead of come * did one circuit of figure of 8 and lead out before being told to * before leaving dog on recall, said wait and then did the signal * when coming in for the stand for exam stopped before the judge told me too. But we still managed to pass. So you are not alone. But what helps me is when you are at a double trial, or the nerves come out at the morning trial and you are more relaxed in the afternoon trial.

Well actually it is 6 trials and 6 passes!!! Because we did CCD first and then CD second. 5 different judges. But I didn't enter him until I was sure he could do it. At the moment I don't think he would pass all the exercises in Open so will not enter him until he is ready. But I am thinking of going to a trial to video a dog performing open so I know what is expected. CCD and Novice are not that hard. Moses is no where near perfect. But if I wanted to spend the extra time getting him perfect I think he would become bored and I would lose his drive. His recalls had slowed down in Novice, as had his retrieve.

I got told that I was cruel when I was teaching my dog to swim. I was not forcing him in. All I was doing was putting floating rice crackers on top of the water. I told him that unlike his dog (which was a jack russell) my dog has a double coat, and that my dog was choosing to swim and that I was not forcing him in any way. Also that in the hot weather my dog knows how to go and cool down.

Flyball Comp - Saturday 5th August, Albury/wodonga
whatevah replied to whatevah's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
The funniest thing I saw on the day was this chocolate lab I think it came from Ballarat. It went to the flyball box, took the ball out and then noticed that another ball had been left behind. So it spits the first ball to get the second ball, then it wanted the first ball back. Then it tried to get both of the balls into its mouth but they wouldn't fit. Then it went back to getting one ball, then it changed its mind and tried the two balls, then it finally got one ball and ran over the jumps with it. In flyball if a dog gets a ball it has to be the one out of the flyball box. In the end the judge couldn't decide which ball it had. LOL -
I mainly train at Kintala Club, but go to Croydon only for the ring run throughs, to polish up.

Here is a video of Moses's first obedience trial. We are not perfect but scored 95/100. It is at KCC Park, and it is raining. have uploaded Moses first obedience trial run by the Golden Retriever club under the new rules. Have done this so people can see the standard, and the heeling pattern. We got 95/100. The video does not show the stays. It is interesting to note that Moses is actually looking at me at the end of the heeling as if to say, so wheres my reward. He actually nearly jumped up on the judge. LOL. At one stage during the recall, I left without the dog, and they told me to go back and bring him with me. LOL

Flyball Comp - Saturday 5th August, Albury/wodonga

Hastings Came last in Division 5, Croydon Scientists won their division and the trophy for the highest number of clean runs, which I think is an excellent idea. Cannot remember the rest of the results. Big thanx to Western Weiners for helping us with ball shagging and stats. I was exhausted after trying to run two dogs in the same team at the same time, one of our dogs in the team didn't like to run without running around jumps. Which was a shame as it was a fast dog. Moses got a new personal best he ran 5.09. He didn't stuff up all day which was great. Our team ran any time from 27 seconds to 33 seconds!!! That was with a clean run. Thank goodness for the new point system, or we would have come home without a single point under the old system. I camped out and their was ice on my tent in the morning. Not frost, ICE!!!! plus ice on our cars. My sleeping bag kept me warm. Hints for keeping warm in 0 degrees in a tent. Have a shower before bed, and zip up your sleeping bag to the top, have a least 2 dogs in the tent with you. Remember to bring your towel, using your jeans as towel doesn't quite make it. LOL The venue was fantastic it was a horse arena, and plenty of room, and we didn't have to set up marques, and we didn't have the public coming in and annoying the dogs, it was barried off. Saw some fantastic dogs running. Canberra X Factor had this lovely slimline labrador (yellow) who ran really smoothly and did a great box turn, looked fantastic, as did Jade from Berwick (who also does a fantastic turn). Jade is a rescue dog, and Nicole has done a fantastic job with her. -

I won't be going to Geelong one as I am doing an obedience trial with Moses which is restricted to gun dogs, they only have a couple a year. Don't you hate when you can't be in two places at once. LOL When you have a choice and you pick one and wish you had picked the other. Would have loved to see Nova run. Berwicks token toller. -

I found a great idea for deprived lure coursing dogs. Go to a produce pet store, or one in the outer suburbs that sell stuff for horses. You can buy this nylon horse whip thingi. What you do is tie a plastic bag on the end, and fling it around my dogs go ape over it. The thing is about 15 feet long. I got a nice purple one. -

I have a copy of the running order. Rhi our team is competing against Ballarat, we are the slowest team there. LOL Not about speed anymore. Where are people staying, our team is at the Albury Caravan Park in North Road, we have a cabin but I am thinking of the camping option. -
