You can teach a pup tricks straight away. But don't teach any jumping tricks until the pup is fully grown.

Go to this link for how to teach swimmers turn http://forums.dogzonline.com.au/index.php?showtopic=9979 has photos as well. My web page also has photos and instructions. http://www.dogtrick.741.com I found this method at http://www.k9station.com/turns2.htm and found it has more uses than just teaching a swimmers turn. If you take your time, and don't rush the dog make sure you meet each stage before continuing, it will work really well. A lot of clubs don't want to take the time to teach properly. I went out and bought a turning board to teach my dog correctly. If your dog learns to do it wrong from the start, it is a lot harder to retrain than if you taught it right the first time. To see a video of it in action goto http://www.k9events.com/Jules_Photos/index.html

Josh got an injury in his turning leg because he wasn';t taught a swimmers turn. Moses I taught him a swimmers turn and he has not had any injuries. Both dogs are fine now and have their FDCh titles. You have to teach a swimmers turn. I also don't go every week, I like to give the dogs a rest. They actually run faster when they haven't done it for awhile.

I have chooks at home and used to have a sheep and my dogs never think to chase them. A plastic bag on a string looks a bit different. My dogs do chase tennis balls though.
-
I make my own treat bags. I bought a little yellow bait box, and thread that over a strap which clips together. I prefer the yellow plastic bait box, because I can open and close without looking and easily get my hand inside it. It also washes out really well.

Josh did not know what to do at the start. He just stood there, then they got me to get him to watch the other dogs and have never looked back. I had a munsterlander that did it and my toller. I have found that puppy's pick it up quick because they like to chase. My dogs love to retrieve. Josh is chasing it for the sole purpose of trying to catch it to bring it back to me.

Lure Coursing Melbourne 28th Aug
whatevah replied to Purple Julie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
My boys trashed the course as usual. But what was really funny was when Moses got into the tunnel at the end, he then walked backwards for about 4 feet with the tunnel still on top of him, hilarious. I videod the staffy and the toller which I will email to staffords rule today, the stills that is. At the end of the run three people stand on the tunnels so Moses cannot get in. When they had the lure runnining anti clockwise it confused poor Josh and he just stood there waiting for it come out the right end. The greyhounds were great to watch. Anybody not there you missed out. They said it was one of their biggest turnouts. The toller run was a great idea. Here is a picture of staffords rules toller, check out the speed. It was really great to see the dogs that had no idea at the start then on their second run it suddenly clicked. Todd knows what lure coursing is about now, saw the lightbulb click. When sparty first ran he thought he had to herd Josh, LOL, on his next runs he got the idea. -
Lure Coursing Melbourne 28th Aug

I think I can hear some chickens. ) LOL With lure coursing it is just a bit of fun, who cares whether the dog can do it or not. Josh just stood there on his first go and did nothing, now look at him. It does not prove anything whether you dog can chase a plastic bag or not. You are not competing, it is just fun. Every dog has a different style. Last time there were two kelpies similar in age and same colouring. One kelpie was really great, and the other kelpie ran around the perimeter keeping the plastic bag contained!! Some dogs like to point at the bag. Some dogs like mine try and uproot the tunnels and one of my dogs actually got inside the tunnel. One of my dogs caught the lure and ripped it off the cable. Some rhodesian ridgebacks cannot even do it and it is there sport. So come on and give it a go!!! There are no prizes. I think it is a great opportunity to put faces to names. My name is Jules, so don't need to call me toilet duck. LOL!!! I will be bring my video camera so if anybody wants me to video for them, bring a blank VHS tape and money for postage, and I can arrange to send it out to you. -

I think with the food, everybody bring something like a pack of biscuits, chips, cakes, dips etc, then we can all share. -

Why don't you have a sickie? I will be bringing Josh and Moses. Josh is pretty good at calming down aggressive/nervous dogs. He is quite submissive and will lick the other dogs mouth, if he thinks it is worried. -
I am going to Lure Coursing on 28th. Chezy thanx for the pix of my dogs, Moses was having a bad hair day!!!

If we are at the next one my flatcoat won't mind anyone running with him. He has had strange dogs run with him before. He caught the lure and ripped it off the cable, he thought he had to bring it to me. My toller was quivering with excitement. My husband thought he was shivering. That black and white dally that was screaming was hilarious. The chinese crested were great too all four of them. You do fantastic shots chezzyr. Makes a big difference a good quality camera.

my two dogs had a great time and went into the creek for a dip when they got home and are now asleep. I was surprised at the end of the run Moses actually got into the tunnel. Josh once again caught the lure and tried to bring it to me, and they had to do repairs. They had a heap of nice mandarines there. Josh won happiest dog at Emerald Winterfest and we got $15 voucher.
-
I will be definately there. Both my dogs love lure coursing. When Josh first did it, he just stood there and looked dumb. They said let him watch, and then have another go. He had another go and absolutely loves it. So if anyone want to run with Josh let me know. If you have a puppy you do the same run but they make the lure slower and you don't have as much time. I am going to the Winterfest at Emerald before this, which is on at 12.00pm I think and has 16 events in one hour, we are trying for best trick again. I will be in a red station wagon. My nick name is Jules, so you don't need to call me toilet duck. LOL ;) Cannot wait!!!!

Have you tried placing the dog in a sit and very very slowly lure into beg position. Sometimes just try luring part of the way and gradually increase the distance.
-
Josh is a well experienced very friendly flatcoated retriever, if people want to run with him they can.
-
As I said this trick can take months to teach, it took my dog 3 months and now he is even offering it, very cute. I have even added in the wave. He gets up into beg position, and then waves one of his paws whilst begging so cutttteee. One secret if the dog is going too far back and losing balance or jumping up hold the lure just above the nose or the head but not too high up. ADVANCED So for those that have mastered the beg and also taught wave you could add the wave in as well whilst dog is begging. If the dog goes back into sit to wave, then tell him beg again. He should soon put it together. You could also get the dog to hold an object whilst in beg position. If you dog already sit and holds you could then add the beg and hold.
-
I will probably try my best to get their, both of my dogs love it. They will do puppy runs, but they will only do short ones.
-
Here is another photo of Moses begging. He looks like a meer cat.
-
Here is one of Josh, this is not a swimmers turn. My club don't teach them so I taught Moses myself.
-
Here are some pics, this one of Josh is not a swimmers turn, and the one of Moses is. Moses red dog, Josh black dog.
-
Fantastic photos of the beg, keep them coming. I might get a couple of my dogs.
-
TollersOwned, It could be the breed as I said it took months to get Moses to do it, he is now holding the beg for longer, I just perserved. I was at canineMelbourne freestyle meeting and one lady suggesting holding the hand signal in one hand and clicking with the other hand. As I have been doing the signal with two hands and saying "yes" when he gets it.

You have to hunt around in pet shops. They are not that expensive. I prefer audible ones.
