    Poop Question

I disagree. It's not a waste of money at all. New puppies should always be taken to the vet after purchase for a full health check. Diarrhoea can very quickly cause dehydration in a baby puppy. I don't know if Tess has already done this but if not, a vet consult is the way to go. Take a sample of the poop with you Tess. Not sure where on this thread it says the puppy has been with new owner for only 2 days and is therefore about 8-9 weeks old? If the purpose of the visit is a new puppy health check then probably agree, otherwise if its already had a health check I would still wait a day or two more before taking him/her to the vets.

    Poop Question

If he is not vomiting and has a normal appetite and is drinking save your money... it will pass and this is normal for dogs.
  3. Thanks guys, will take this advise and take her tomorrow for the diagnosis... she is clawing at the crate to be let out but tough love is required...
  4. Hi All, Rather than start a new thread I wanted to ask some advice. On the weekend Jasmine was off leash at Cenntenial park and she got bundled over by a large GSD male - all in good sprit - but she took a nasty tumble and then started limping the next day. We rested her for two days and then yesterday she ran about a bit and starting limping and hopping on her rear leg again. Decided to take her to the vets last night and the vet said she had damaged her ligament in her knee - presumaby twisted when she fell over after being tackled by the male GSD. Up for a $300-400 vet bill on Friday to have her xrayed and an accurate diagnosis if she has fractured her cartilage or just strained her ligament - hopefully it is the later. As per the previous answers are there any dog pyhio's good with GSD in Sydney for a second opinion that I could take her to today, or should I just proceed with the Xray? I am just a bit cautious about vets and unnecessary work... She is being crated 24 hours at the mo except for toilet and food. Thanks in advance, Alan.
  5. Our GSD is 5 1/2 monnth and she lost her first puppy tooth today...
  6. One technique that has worked well for us is to hold our puppies muzzle with a firm NO with eye contact. When this failed we would actually hold her down with one hand with the other holding her muzzle. We started with 30 seconds and gradually reduced this. After two weeks she had stopped mouthing and barking at us. Good luck.
  7. http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...18345&st=60 Please read if you have a puppy with vomitting and/or diarrhea issues. Our GSD has been in hospital for the past two days....
  8. What about cleaning - are there any cleaning products people use to get rid of that wee/poo smell that is not going to harmful to the dog, especially for grass? We have a noticible increase in flies since Jasmine joined the family... I generally clean when she poos.
  9. Just bland food. Since her first throw up she only had water for about 36 hours and then was fed this morning - chicken, cottage cheese and rice - as advised by the vet yesterday.
  10. She is 5 months old, and is fully uptodate with vaccines and worming... We are a bit stressed as she is still a baby - vet said blood work came back clean. Based on how she responds to food and water in the morning i.e. if she does not vomit then it will rule out a blockage and then its a bad case of HGE. Fingers crossed she will be alot better in 24 hours.
  11. Hi all, After a trip to Cenntenial park on Sunday, little Jasmine started having diarrhea and vomitting the following day. Took her to the vets yesterday and she was given an anti-inflammatory and something to settle her. This morning I fed her bland food, after 24 hours of nothing except water, and she vommited it and then had a another loose stool with blood! Took her to the vets again this morning and had to admit her for three days. Vet said there could be a few possibilities - hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis, blockage or pancreatitis.... Has anyone had similar symptoms with their dogs and how did they recover? Thanks Alan.
  12. Yep, she is a GSD and guess she does have built in grinders... $14k that's cheap, might get two then.. Will need to find a nice butchers... Thanks
  13. Hi All, Another BARF related thread - where can I get a grinder capable of grinding chicken bones and/or brisket (lamb or beef) in the sydney area? I have had a look around but cannot find any - they are usually meat only grinders not capable of grinding bone... Thanks A.
  14. I had not checked the pricing - $7 for 500 grams of chicken thighs methinks Jasmine will get her supplements from another source as well (-;
  15. Hi Poodlefan, OK - so I am also adding ground flaxseed to her BARF, so maybe I should exclude CLO even if its small quantities? Quote from DrB The BARF diet, pg 36 - "CLO is the one daily supplement I recommend above all else for the vast majority of pets"

  17. What I have read on organic versus factory farmed is that this meat lacks essential Activated Omega3's due to factory farmed being fed exclusively grain rather than natural grazing. This is the reason for my question on organic as this meat does contain activated omega three's (dogs do not produce the enzymes required to turn inactive to active). In BARF is to be the best it can be, then it looks like facotry farmed may lack this essential ingredient. That being said I am adding cod liver oil to her diet which is high in activated Omega3s. Thanks Alan.
  18. Hi All, Started feeding an all BARF diet a few weeks ago and it is going v.well to our 4mth GSD. One question - of those of you that feed BARF who feeds free range/organic bones - especially chicken (necks, wings etc)? From what I have read organic is much better.. is this to pedantic and should I not worry? Also, just read the thread on human versus puppy mince - guess I should think about a human grade meet - what about the fat content? Human mince is lean whereas puppies need higher fat content? Thanks....
  19. Check out this site... http://www.diamondpaws.com/health/barf.htm Also, check out the following link... synonomous with "SuperSize Me!"... http://www.diamondpaws.com/health/petfood.htm May change your mind on the dry commercial dog food.
  20. Thanks Miranda. Yes, I can touch her ribs and through her thick coat its hard for any to be visible and she has a good shape as you described. The aforementioned author would argue that food/maintenance are far more important than genetic factors - and dogs with poor genetic scores have a very good chance of not developing these issues with the appropriate diet and maintenance. She is also fed raw food and bones as per the BARF guidelines. Jasmine's parents both have very good scores for HD and elbow, just want to ensure we are doing everything in her interests to ensure she develops properly.
  21. Hi All, As some may be aware I converted Jasmine to a BARF diet a couple of weeks ago and have just received my Dr Billingham books in the post regarding the feeding and maintenance of this large breed (GSD). In the book it talks of slow growth i.e. lean and mean = low % of joint defects. What it is does not do is define what slow growth means. I am on the page regarding maintance - in that currently during her fear period we are keeping her housebound and the only exercise she gets is play time and chewing those RMBs. After this period her exercise will be maintained with short walks etc. I have looked at some sources on the web defining how quickly a GSD grows, but again it does define whether this rate is slow/normal or fast. So at 16 weeks my limited research says females on average weight 16kg, Jasmine is 15.5kg at 4 months. Can anyone assist me here on what is slow growth and how do I check if she is growing too fast and hence need to cut feed back a bit. Currently I am feeding her about 5% of her weight per day (about 650gms) - mixture of home made patties and RMB. Thanks A&D.
  22. Hi All, Over the winter we have painted our pool and starting yesterday to refill it. It's quite big 10m x 5m and up to 2M deep. Anyhow, this morning took the dog into this area as I was checking the progress took my eye off her and she dives ito the deep end going under the water, comes up and then proceeds to doggy paddle around with a big dog grin on her face.. In my pajamas have to jump in also (shallow end) and call her to me at which point she thinks this is all great fun and doggy paddles towards me, pull her towards the steps she gets out and then proceeds to have a crazy five minutes running around! It was a very funny start to the day especially her belly flop! Thank god it was not winter...
  23. Wow, actually spent the time reading this thread and am bemused how someone posting for help cannot realise that over 95% of this thread is positive advise and some constructive critism. I hope that frank is lucky and his dog grows up to have the same temperament as his GS, as his current methodology is clearly incorrect - even for a newbie dog owner such as myself I can see the folly in his thinking. We are a first time dog owner (ignoring my parents lap dog!) and with our 16 wk GS need all the help and research we can get to ensure she grows up to be a great dog. Sure I could leave her to behave as a human, but then again I could try and draw upon the wealth of experience out there from people who have lived with dogs all their lives and know what they are talking about. We have invested in K9 Force for his guidance - maybe overkill some would think but we are not going to take any chances. I do wish Frank all the luck in the world - but, only for his children's sake and of course his dogs.
  24. OUCH!!! good advise persephone, i was going to say similar as its what worked with levi and fergus!!! Not that hard to elicit an ouch! I believe the holding the muzzle is a dominant action and it is not intended to hurt the dog, it is uncomfortable and she got the message quickly enough. To begin with if she got too excited we would hold her down whilst holding her muzzle - again dominant not aggressive...
  25. The way we stopped mouthing was to hold her muzzle when she mouthed and a firm NO with eye contact. You can also try to pull her lip over her teeth when she bites so she realises it hurts.
