  1. Other breeds used as guide dogs: Smooth Collie Golden Retriever Dobermann Flat coated retriever
  2. You know what I really don't get about the whole Lab/poodle cross thing? Why take two perfectly good (not identiical in many ways) breeds and think you can improve on them by mixing their genes? Poodles are not just like Labradors. Labradors are not poodles without the wool coat. Poodles are not just about their non-shedding coats. Those who want a dog with a guaranteed non-shedding coat already have a range of breeds and temperaments to choose from. So why mix these two breeds with inconsistent results to produce "a great family pet". Poodles and Labradors both make great family pets in the right family. I still maintain that the primary reason a lot of families opt for the mix is because the male of the house thinks owning a poodle will emasculate him. The men need to cowboy up and get past that idea pronto. If they can't then buy a bloody Lagotto or an Irish Water Spaniel or something.
  3. Why not just use a standard poodle? Oodlies need clipping anyway. Well this is exactly what I thought and wonder if it has been done, was it successful, if not why not and if so why haven't we heard more about it. ETA: thanks for clarifying poodlefan. Do you know why they aren't used here in Australia then? My understanding was that their relatively late arrival at maturity may have had something to do with it. What I will tell you is that it takes a certain type of training to get the best out of one and frankly I think those who've only worked with Labs might have needed to think outside the box and didn't want to. Given the much longer working life you'd get out of an SP - they are long lived for their size - I think they should have been persevered with.
  4. Standard poodles are used as guide and assistance dogs in other countries.
  5. Yes, and without wishing to offend anyone I wonder what John Q Public would think if he stumbled across this thread? In the latest issue of the Dogs NSW Canine Journal I noted the usual party line from the President about registered breeders needing to be differentiated from the puppy farmers and BYBs under emerging laws. WE shouldn't be subject to the same external scruitiny he states. Well "good luck" is all I can say. While the Canine Controls sit on their hands and allow "registered breeders" to rort members of the public, fail to health test and to export whole litters of pups overseas to puppy agents you know what? Those breeders are NO BETTER than BYBs and Puppy Farmers. All that differentiates them is an ANKC prefix. EVERY registered breeder who fails to abide by the highest standard of ethics, who cross breeds (yes some do) sells pups without papers and who knowingly or recklessly breeds dogs with inheritable conditions drags all the other breeders into the crosshairs of the animal welfare lobby ready and willing to impose regulation upon us. We are being damned by own own members and until something is done about it from WITHIN, then external regulation is not only inevitiable, but desireable IMO. Its all well and good to blame Don Burke for promoting DDs but frankly if all was well within the purebred dog world, much of what he's sewn would never have taken root. Now there's an elephant in this room that no one seems to want to look at.
  6. DDs are the elephants in the room. Their existance shouldn't be ignored. You can't learn or educate people about this issue unless you discuss it. This dog IS an emerging breed. Sure, a lot of work needs to be done and that god awful name has to go but there are breeders who have gone way beyond F1 crosses. I still think if people knew more about existing breeds with some or all of the characteristics of the DDs there would be a lower demand for them. The other issue to consider is that people go for these dogs because their perception is that purebreds are for dog snobs, less healthy, harder to obtain and that breeders can be difficult to deal with. Those are real issues that purebred dog folk NEED to be discussing.
  7. Howard and I will be there all 4 days. I suppose I should take the pink and purple palace!
  8. IF the breeder of these pups is ANKC registered and IF posters can identify breaches of the ANKC Rules and Regulations then my advice is to cough up the cash, make a formal complaint and have the matter dealt with that way. All these posts are just peeing into the wind - there are no consquences for the breeder flowing from any of them.
  9. Get a dog door. An inside only puppy/dog is going to have trouble getting enough Vitamin D. I'd be training my dog to go outside - after all for most of the year the temperatures are fine and they can go out, do their business and come back in all year round with a dog door.
  10. You've survived your trial by fire. I've been pretty vocal about aggression and offlead parks before but no amount of finger pointing was going to achieve anything more than you've just learned. Your recent experience has clearly given you a lot of food for thought. No point in putting the boot in when you were down I thought People are very passionate about these issues - try not to take it personally. Hope your girl gets the all clear from the vet. :p
  11. Nah, you don't want one of ReadySetGo's pups - you might end up with one like Brett the Bastard. Nah, I lubs ya Brettles.. who can resist that stafford grin from a dog that's just itching to climb onto your lap.
  12. They even forward some of their proposed policy to the CC for comment!
  13. You mean they don't go around in the ACT wasting $$ and preying on the soft targets ? Maybe he could come and teach those in NSW and VIC how to do their job They don't support BSL, they want to see pet shop puppies banned and they even meet with the Canine Control to discuss issues of mutal interest!
  14. Before the finger pointing and hair pulling got underway, did anyone advise the OP to take her dog to a vet? A bite wound can be worse internally than externally and abcesses are not uncommon as a result. I'd want my dog checked out and some antibiotics as well. The alternative to public dog parks is private dog obedience clubs. Some have offlead areas for members. That doesn't guarantee an incident free time but it sure improves the odds of one. Another alternative has already been suggested - use the public places at quiet times when other users aren't around.

    Mouthing

Gundog pups can be damn difficult to deter with anything but aversive methods. Bred to retrieve, they live to have things in their mouths at times. I've had more than one gallop towards me with its mouth open ready to latch on. Before I advise, what methods have you tried?
  16. I think a fairly significant contingent of localsl will be out at the dog shows. Hound Club show is that day
  17. Michael Linke has done wonders for the RSPCA here in the ACT (or at least has been at the helm while his team has) I hope he can produce the same results down there in Tassie.
  18. Would she put that down to the Poodles or the Labs? (just stirring ) I'd put it down to puppy buyers having no idea what sort of temperament their pup was going to have and probably having little idea of how to keep them stimulated. Some buyers of these dogs seem to think they're buying a furry garden ornament.
  19. Wow - that's what I call service!! Now all he needs is to start up a gazebo hire business for out of towners!!
  20. Well I hope he gets what's coming to him. Yet another tragic example of why dog owners shouldn't leave their dogs unattended in public places.
  21. You're also going to need a method of control, containment and transport once the dog is caught. A size large wire dog crate OR a ute or wagon with a custom built cage spring to mind. He's going to need to be catchpoled into the containment and removed similarly at the pound. Fingers crossed he cooperates once caught. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  22. Post a pic if you can. If its behind her canines, it could be a premolar.
  23. Post a pic if you can.
  24. Post a pic if you can.
  25. Teething is usually done and dusted by around 5 months. Is it possible she has retained a baby canine?
