  1. it seems like she is a normal pup, i think 3 or 4 meals a day is important until at least 12 weeks, perhaps an activity ball or kong with her mid day meal is an idea, that way when she is hungry she can chase her next meal.
  2. You cant be too careful when it comes to children and dogs..... you are doing the right thing. I hope everything works out for you.
  3. As a side note: When we first started training our poodle cross the instructor told us all to go out and buy chocker (check) chains. That was only 7 yrs ago
  4. Because we have 3 dogs all different ages, i had to enforce the rules with the older dogs to stop the younger one from getting hurt, especially at meal times and the younger dogs follow the example. Our poodle cross is very well trained, i spent a lot of time with her when she was little and our younger dogs seem to follow her lead. i use a lot of games and treats and positive reinforcement, i dont punish any of my dogs when they do something bad becasue i dont think it works.....dogs are like small children you need love, patience and a sense of humor. even our groomer says that our dogs are a joy to work with because they are well mannered around other dogs, understand stand and sit commands and freeze when you say stop! I know stop is not a common word to use but i didn't know a lot when i got my poodle cross and i used stop. now the other dogs have learned it. it is very handy at the park or beach if they are off the leash or if you are near a busy road and they are excited. i love my dogs and i want to protect them!
  5. I start with the basics, after pre school, all i did was ask the dog to sit and when she does reward her with a snack. i never growl at or punish even my adult dogs. i have the joy of being home with my dogs all day so we might train for a few minutes every hour, and by train i mean, i will ask the dogs to sit. when we go to the park, i will ask them to stop, on leashes, and reward compliance. i dont physically force the dog to sit ! any one who has ever tried to train a jack russell knows that trying to force them to do anything is like moving a mountain.
  6. We have a gentle leader and we have had great results with it, our now almost 1 yr old jack russell had major problems walking and the gentle leader broke her of her old habits and she now walks with a collar. We also have full body halters for our dogs that fit into the back of our car, but they are not very good for walking, not enough control.
  7. I have always started training my dogs from the day they come home, my current dogs are all rescues, but i was told today that i am too firm with my 13 week old jack russell. She has mastered stop, sit, drop and is pretty much house trained. However today at puppy pre-school i made her stop and sit while i opened the car and was told by the vet running it that i was too firm with such a small puppy. I have always thought that the basic's will save a puppys life and make the vets job a lot easier. What do you think?
  8. What lovely dogs.... it was a shame she had a bit of a tough entry into the world but as the proud owner of 2 JRT's your fun is only just starting.
  9. How do i find a good vet, we live in the Adelaide CBD, but i am willing to go anywhere to find a good vet. Any hints, i have been to see 2 vets i found in the yellow pages but one didn't deal with JRT and the other one gave me the creeps. Any help would be fabulous! thank you
  10. Hi! I have 2 jack russell Terriers, one is almost 12 months and fairly well trained, she has a level 3 obidence certificate, the other is only a pup and not started pre school yet. Could the older dog play fly ball? what is involved with training? She loves balls, is quick on her feet and has way too much energy! Any information would be welcomed, Thank you in advance.
  11. I did the WEA course here in Adelaide and it was very basic....i did it to learn how to look after my dogs and it was very helpful but it only covers basics like wash, dry, clean eyes, ears and trim nails ( not something i can do ) my groomer came out of the tafe course and she is fabulous, but she also has show dogs and knows a lot about the industry. i would probably do some hands on work in a salon before i spent any money on a course.
  12. When training i use small bits of cooked chicken, little bits of cheese, little bits of rice crackers and little bits of apple (not the core or the seeds) our jack russells love it
  13. I am one of those lazy people who don't spend as long as i should caring for my dogs.... i send them to the groomers once a fortnight for a wash and dry or more often if they get grubby. Reading this forum has opened my eyes to what groomers go through, thank you.
  14. Thank you all for you replies...... I have spoken to the vet clinic and decided to go looking for another vet in our area. When I contacted them, there stance was that the vet has spoken....I dont agree and i have decided to take my business elsewhere. This is the same vet that offered to put down a one of my friends kittens because it had poor markings. Sicko!
  15. All of my dogs have been rescues.... i have issues with the whole designer dog market, what people are willing to do to make money is appalling.... when i got Pepsi, she has been rescued after spending 14 hour in a reflex paper box..... she was purchased online from a "breeder" she was barely 6 weeks old, freezing and close to death...... the person that had purchased her dumped her on our door step... rang the bell and ran.... i found out her story when i took her to the vet.... her microchip had her new owners details and they told the vet the story. i couldn't bare to see her go through any more so i nursed her.
  16. I have 3 fur children, all female, i have a spoodle (7) and 2 jack russell terriers (both under 1). i recently took all three to the vet for check up and vaccinations, while i was there i learnt that the vet i have been seeing for the past 15 years or so has retired, My appointment was with a much younger vet. i mentioned to the vet that i wanted to book her in to be desexed, both of the other dogs are desexed and i have no intention of breeding with her and i would hate for her to get out and come home with something unexpected. the vet said that desexing is un-natural and not nessesary! What do you think? i am only new to Dogzonline but i value the opinion of other members.
  17. when we send our dog in, i have to remember to tell them not to put any flea rinse or baby powder on her becasue that always makes her itch and cry. Apparently some places use powder after they are dry, i am not sure why!
