  1. My 3 y/o little JS had a dental 2 weeks ago. It cost $399 which included anaesthesia, bloods & IV fluids. I was asked what I'd be willing to pay if something else needed doing, either $250, $500 or $1000, & they couldn't get in touch with me. I opted for $250. If I hadn't they said he'd have to be woken up & it would cost more to do what would be needed. Luckily he didn't need any extras.

I took my JS pup to the pet dentist & the initial consult fee was over $400.

  2. Hi Everyone - the bag is a 3 kg bag of the Wild game with Sweet Potato, with a best before date of 07/01/2016 and the number C 22157. Suggest people check their bags. I'm waiting to hear from VIP and will be disappointed if I don't. We'll see...

I was worried I'd bought the same flavour for my dogs but I got the chicken with duck & garden veg with best before date of 26/12/2015. Where did the other no. come from? I can only find the time stamp of A 01:25, is that it?

  3. I was offered to have my BC's papers changed from LR to MR when I told her breeder I'd like to try showing. When her ears didn't do the right thing I didn't pursue it. I was also offered a change with my little runt JS if he grew to standard. He didn't, plus he had other problems.

Each breeder told me they were the only ones that could make the change.

  4. I'm trying to find a thread about a dog vomiting & when taken to the vets vomiting while waiting. The owner said the only thing they could think of was the new bag of kibble, I think it was VIP grain free, that was causing it. They also gave the batch no. & use by date in a later post. I've searched the DOL forums & FB & can't find it. I have a new bag also & am wary of giving it to my dogs.

Does anyone have this info please?

  5. I'm not sure we could fit in too many more play sessions really. She currently gets tired before I do and takes herself off to her crate  But I'm certainly happy to give tablets a go. It can't be any worse than with Bandit, it takes both my partner and myself and at least one of us ends up bleeding with him. He's a great cat really though!

I can relate to cats, much easier with dogs if you know how. :)

  6. I thought that was what you meant Danie11e about the heartworm injection. I do not recommend this as I've heard so many horror stories of what can go wrong. You are giving your dog a years worth of product in the one go & if she's allergic to it there's nothing you can do. With the monthly chews she would only be getting a much smaller amount & can try something else the next time. dancinbcs had this problem with her Border Collies as per persephone's link.

    "Heartworm

Heartworm prevention should start before 6 months of age. Prevention can be done with monthly heartworm tablets such as Interceptor, Sentinel or Panoramis. Or with monthly spot-on products such as Advocate or Revolution. Or a heartworm injection given at 6 months of age, then yearly. If your dog is older than 6 months of age and not on any heartworm prevention, a blood test to check your dog hasn't caught heartworm should be performed before starting prevention." 7. After eating a total of 12g over 3 meals on Wednesday last week I decided to try her on a raw diet, as I had been reading quite a lot of information on them and was considering it as a possibility anyway, this just helped me decide sooner. So off to the butchers I went and came home armed with human grade beef mince, liver and chicken hearts (I already had mass chicken necks!). The most common information I had read was 80% of the total food was to be muscle meat, with 10% bone and 10% offal, and to feed approximately 2% of her expected adult weight. I went with 25kg as an adult weight as a starting point and split this across her 3 meals as I wanted her eating again. Success! She was even growling at the cat when he tried to steal it!

Then today I went off shopping with my mum and we predictably ended up in Pet Barn. I noticed the pre-packaged BARF food in the freezer and out of interest started to read the packaging. This then got me panicking as the total recommended amount of that is far less in weight than I have been giving her and has different amounts suggested for different weights, whereas 2% of her expected adult weight is consistent. I ended up buying a box thinking that I could follow that for the duration of the box and give myself time to research further as I do want to prepare her food myself eventually. I had intended to speak to a particular vet when we went for our vaccination on Friday last week, but we saw a different one as I hadn't thought to ask for her. I didn't speak to him about it as English isn't his first language and we don't understand each other as well as we could, but I did book in specifically with the other vet for the heartworm session on the 19th. I was happy to just monitor the situation until then as our puppy seems to be perfectly happy, full of energy and toileting normally but now I am just feeling overwhelmed with information and lacking in confidence to make a decision and stick with it.

Any reassurance or pointers towards good information resources would be greatly appreciated, or better yet tell me "do x and y for now then reassess the situation in z weeks"!

    Thanks!

What do you mean by the bolded bit?

    Some info on feeding raw.

  8. Is There Such a Thing as a kibble that keeps the teeth clean? Panda my little Japanese Spitz boy is going in tomorrow for a dental. I've had him on a raw meaty bone diet for about the last 2 years to try & keep his teeth clean. It hasn't worked. The back teeth aren't too bad but from the k9's forward the tops of his teeth are brown. In the last few weeks his gums have also been swollen, again, from the k9's forward.

I asked the vet, who incidentally doesn't like bones - surprise, surprise, & she said there's a kibble by Canidae with smaller kibbles for little dogs that has a plaque inhibitor in it & one other that I can't remember. I've tried plaque off, which also didn't work & also have water additives which I have yet to try but will after tomorrow.

I know they say that kibble doesn't work on plaque because they just crack & break without actually making much contact with the tooth. And raw feeders will tell you that it's the action of chewing huge chunks of meat that cleans the teeth & not the cracking of bones.

So again I ask, has anyone tried a kibble that really does keep a dog's teeth clean?

  9. I feed my guys mostly a raw diet, even my son's 4 month old kitten loves it & will even eat a chicken leg. From what I've read about raw diets it's not recommended to feed mince, it's better to cut the meat up in chunks, something pup can chew & it's good for teeth. It's also said that mince meat has more surface area for bacteria to grow. He doesn't really need veggies but if you still want to feed them they are better crushed & raw.

My first Japanese Spitz had a funny tummy for the first year or so I had him. Not good having to wash a dirty white butt every day. Had to be so careful what I fed him, He was also on chicken & rice for a week when I got him. He's now mostly settled with a raw meaty bone diet & occasional grain free kibble.

Puppies are very tiring when young. But in no time at all things will settle down. How are other things going like toilet training? where does he sleep? etc. Have you taken him to the vet/new vet again about his leg?

He's very cute by the way, need more pics. Did you tell us his name?

  10. The 1st part of your post Yonjuro sounded like Panda was at 7.5 mths except he didn't hump but started cocking his leg inside, & he had 2 retained testicles. I had wanted to wait until at least 12 - 18 mths to have him desexed but didn't want to have any problems, so I had him done at 8 mths. It wasn't until after he'd been done that I'd read about people waiting until after 12 mths. Anyway, after that he never cocked his leg inside again until we got Laci 8 mths ago, with a stern 'no' he hasn't done it again. :D

  11. When looking for a Border Collie you need to make sure the parents have been tested clear or not affected by the 3 main diseases, Cl, TNS & CEA. Also with low hip scores. You would very likely not find this done by a byb.

Here's a long thread on a sick BC pup with tns. very sad but proves how important genetic testing is.

  12. This subject came up yesterday with a friend. Her dog hadn't been vaccinated for a few years & she decided to have a titre test done. It came back low so she decided to have a booster vac given. I told her from my understanding even a low result is still protection. I had decided about 12 yrs ago not to have my BC April vaccinated after hearing from a (holistic vet saying that she thought at the time that vacs could last up to 7 yrs, back then it hadn't been proved) & 2 friends after their dogs of a similar age had died after having their yearly vac. We did the same thing with my son's dog when she was 9 y/o.

Now a days the 3 year core vaccinations has come in with a yearly KC vac. With my current dogs that's what I've been doing. It's up to you & your vet what's best for your dog.
