I'd never really met one of these dogs in the flesh before, but I've become friends with someone whose got one. He absolutely adores my son and today he rode him like a horse! He wasn't actually sitting on him, but they both had a blast. This dog doesn't live with any kids and is absolutely mesmorised by my 7yo.

Does Anyone Have A Pet Who Had To Have A Leg Amputated?
Michelleva replied to Michelleva's topic in General Dog Discussion
Well our little cat won't be losing her leg. Some sort of miracle happened and she unfolded her toes and started walking on the foot, almost normally. There is still nerve damage but I do believe the feeling is coming back. The other night she stretched her leg out, and the outside toe moved, I'd never seen that before. The vet and I are calling her the Miracle Kitty. She started using the leg/foot properly two days after I booked in the amputation surgery. She saw her vet on Tuesday and he had a big grin on his face, and said she may still lose a toe or two, but the leg is safe. I'm not worrying about that, because she's doing so well. Thanks for all your input, its great to hear how fantastic all our pets cope under these circumstances. -

Funny you mentioned that, she did fall behind the TV cabinet yesterday. I had to rescue her, she couldn't pull herself up and out of it. Another thought is the foots been bandaged for a long time because she had a nasty wound on it. The wound is now healed and the bandage came off on Tuesday. That certainly did restrict her movement. -

Well I'm now not convinced that she will have the leg ampuated. Since I posted that she walked almost normally past me, she has continued to use the foot correctly. The problem is there is still a lot of swelling and she's still very awkward with it. I'm going to put another call through to my vet this morning. I know he won't do the op if its not necessary. -

Isn't that just amazing. I love how the big dog doesn't treat him any differently that a four-legged version. He's certainly full of spunk. When I saw Destiny walk properly on her foot this morning I thought maybe I'm jumping the gun and given more time it might come good. But it still looks nasty, and honestly she'll be better off without it. No more tears from me, I'll just be happy when she can really start getting up to mischief. Thanks for everyone's input its really helped, as I was really stressed out about the whole thing. The decision was only made yesterday, and us mere humans do take time to come to terms with change sometimes, at least I do. I can really learn alot from these animals, they are just simply amazing. -

Thanks my vet is not one to rush into surgery, but he agrees we need to do something, as its hindering her movement. This morning she walked behind the TV and fell down the back of the cabinet, she was hanging on with her front legs and couldn't get back up. She's just so clumsy with the leg, she falls off the scratching post, off chairs and stuff like that. I hope that improves once the problematic leg is removed. -
Morning everyone, I'm interested to know if anyone has had a dog or cat who had to have a limb amputated? What was the recovery like? How were they when they came home, did you need to help them get around etc? I have a little rescue cat, this is her story http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/242383-my-gorgeous-new-girl-destiny/ And on Tuesday she's booked in to have one of her back legs amputated. She's got nerve damage in the foot and we have battled on for the last 6 weeks with infections and its just not improving. The toes completely fold under the foot when she walks, so its only giving her problems. I know she will be better off, but it was a hard decision to make.

I was only making an observation, not trying to start an argument... sorry, I'll go away now. I'm just over the moon that my Nan got her little boy back, that made my day.
-
You mean pure breds? Or were they all surrendered with pedigree papers? Whats with the nit picking? They were purebred dogs, how would I know what they were surrended with. I'm just a member of the public making an observation.

You HAVE to become slightly immune to it otherwise you wouldn't last longer than a month. Trust me that the staff don't work there for the money. They do care. I'm sure they do, but they just seemed like robots, thats probably the only way they can cope with the situation. I know I wouldn't last a day. And of course I don't expect them to walk around crying, but they could show a little happiness that a little doggy got re-united with his owner, who is her world by the way. I was just saddened by the whole situation.

And the staff acted like they didn't give a damn, almost like they are immune to it. I was astounded by how many pedigree dogs were there. They definitely outnumbered the bitza's.

Yesterday my Nana's little dog went missing. We had family out driving the streets calling him till 11pm last night, there was no sign of him. So this morning I took my Nan up there in the hope of finding her best mate. To my surprise, he was there and after paying the hefty release fee's, he was re-united with his Mum. I've never been to the pound, I haven't had the need. All I can say is I was gobsmacked at how many dogs they had. I'd estimate they had close to 100 dogs, and we didn't even see them all. And there were a lot of pedigree dogs, like Husky's, Labs, Cav's, Poms, Staffies galore and numberous poodle crosses. Just so many dogs, it made me sad wondering how many of them will find their way back home.

This is a great thread. I also have cats and a dog living together quite happily. They all play zoomie games around the house every night. Great pics everyone.

she hadn't even been here 24 hours when that photo was taken, it just goes to show the amount of attitude this little cat has. I guess she's had to just to survive up until this point. She got quite stressed out last night when my daughter wanted to snuggle with her on the couch last night. She was trying to scratch and bite and generally get nasty, so we're backing off and just letting her be for now. She'll be off to see my vet this week. While she was fostered by the shelters vet nurse she must have been stressed and was overgrooming on her back. She's basically bald down her spine, so we have to try and keep her as calm as possible. I think she will be ok, its just going to take a bit of time. I have her out in the family room, so she can see everyone and interact even if not in a physical manner. Its good for my pets to see her and learn about her safely too, and I'm sure in a few more weeks she'll be feeling a lot better once she's into a routine here. -

She's not walking to well at all yet. Its going to take a lot of physio, effort and love and care to get her to be the healthiest she can be. They suspect she may have some nerve damage in one of her feet too. But you know what, she doesn't care. She's the happiest most outgoing, little lovebug I've ever been lucky enough to meet. So far the dog is VERY excited by her, and has received no less than 3 smacks and hisses for her efforts. And the cats are totally avoiding her, its like they have the attitude if we don't look, she's not really there.. LOL But absolutely no agro, which is awesome. -
