  1. There is no "profit" when the money goes back into the dogs as it usually does. Money from puppies becomes turnover and that is very different to profit. Profit is what the tax department wants to know about at the end of the year after you have deducted all expenses. I don't know any reputable breeder that the tax department classes as a business because they make a profit.

alpha bet, good luck with the plan but do consider that a lot of frozen semen pregnancies only produce one puppy and often none at all.

That is absolutely not true. Frozen semen technology now a days is fantastic and rates of success are very high. Working in the industry for the number of years that I did, whilst there were "some" singleton litters and "some" that didn't result in a pregnancy, the instances of successful implantation far outweighed these.

Would it sometimes depends upon the breed too? I am pretty sure that in Australia there has been only one successful frozen semen litter in my breed (with more than one attempt).

  2. I went through my cupboards and made a concoction with anything hot and painted this on and around anything that I didn't want chewing. Check it doesn't stain it first.

Thanks for your help, i might go get some spicy stuff to paint on

my dog loved to lick my other puppy's ears. I was trying to "set" them at the time. Someone suggested adding some pepper to the mix - she licked that off, so I switched to paprika, then cayenne pepper - nothing worked. (I wouldn't risk anything else hotter for sake of the other puppy's eyes.

Vicks Vapourub is a pretty good deterrent to most dogs.

Also make sure he is never left unsupervised with free run of the house and remember to provide lots of stuff he can chew. Most importantly always reprimand when he goes to chew something and shouldn't and always praise when he chews something he should. I keep a toy basket and the puppy gets praised every time he selects something from there. What is left of the basket, survived several Border Collies but the Jap Spitz ate basket as well as the toys. The Vapourub did stop him eating the house though.

I wish! I too tried most things to stop the puppy from trying to chew the plasterboard on the walls. NOTHING works. Her response to the vicks vapourub was to lick it off my fingers after i put some on the wall, then come back for seconds!!

I ended up having to put a wire panel from the puppy pen in front of the wall to stop her.

  3. Thankyou for the replys! Will have a look at each page tomorrow, I know I said I didn't want to order overseas but if i find some i like I am sure to be convinced otherwise.

    Beautiful designs :)

Jessica - will you be at the Toy Dog Club show at SACA on Sunday? I will be there over in the herding area (way over the back) at the herding trial. If you want to pop over, I'll throw some of my leads in the car to show you. PM me.

  4. I know you don't want to purchase from overseas - but I love this lady's leads. Very reasonably priced. The most fun I have is choosing colours then waiting for the lead to arrive. Her quality is better than others I have found here and she is pretty fast with getting them done. She can make whatever you need, slip, martingale, standard lead with clip - whatever you want. She braids around a strong nylon core too so the lead is very strong but still very soft.

I think she has an etsy store too, with some nice leads on it at the moment:

  5. Can I ask a question in this little interlude????

How do they come up with the shortlist to go in to each group?

the judge chooses his top 8 (from all the BOB )and then whittles it down to his top 4

As in, all BOB show up today and they choose the top 8? Or do they sort go back through their records or whatnot and then just the top 8 go in today?

But thankyou at least I now know a bit more about why not every breed is in the group judging!!

all BOB's in today, they they choose the top 8 then the top 4. It's a bit different cause of the best Puppy but that's for another time. mainly only at the Royals.

ETA if the BOB was Best Puppy and doesn't win they are then a beaten dog and can't go into the group lineup.

no, if they were a BOB winner, they would still appear in group line up but most unlikely to win

Puppoochi - not sure about that - Assume the melbourne royal is the same as the adelaide royal. If Puppy was BOB, and didn't win puppy in group, it didn't go in to the Best in Group line up - that breed was missing in the group line up.

  6. I'm quite happy with putting the dogs into a kennel and we have in the past. It is my husband who does not want this; he wants them looked after at home so the house is looked after as well.

I agree with what you said _Megan, that is exactly why I think they did it. The funny thing is, when they were leaving, they said, we don't think you should walk her down the street and I said I know, we don't due to her issues! I thought what cheek of them telling me what to do, when they had ignored me!

Why do you need the house "looked after"? If you leave it empty, it won't get dirty or messy and will be there just as you left it :p

The one thought about needing housesitters for longer holidays..... I discovered when dad had to have an extended stay in hospital, that a house needs to be occupied for at least 2 days per month for the insurance to be ok. My brother and I took turns. Still think I would kennel the dogs though.

  7. Vet took the tooth out yesterday - no complications. He kindly (??) gave me the tooth afterwards to show me. Was very obvious, looking at it, that there was no way this tooth was coming out on its own. The root was very long - twice as long as the tooth itself.

I would like to say, to my poor vet - I don't think I need to be given any souvenirs after my other dog's procedure coming up soon.

  8. there are a few growth charts in our breed that help you to at least have a more than educated guess as to which ones are going to be too big or not make size.

Anything like that in your breed online anywhere?

I have always been very thankful that the breeders of my two keep extensive records on puppies size up until they leave home and onto maturity for the ones they keep. It all adds to the data so you can get a good idea about what is happening.

  9. Make sure the vet x rays it first - you have no idea what is going on under there til you do the x ray, and just pulling it out without knowing how the root look/where the root goes could cause a lot more probs. The x ray I saw of my dog's retained baby canine (I went to the fabulous Dr Christine Hawke in Sydney) showed the root went up first (like it should) and then it headed towards the back of the mouth, crossing over the roots of the two teeth behind it! Thank god she x rayed and so knew what she was dealing with before just pulling away at it.

Thanks very much for that tip!!! Will insist on it.

  10. Yeah, I've downloaded it to my Mac, but need to go get a cf card reader. I only ever plug my camera straight to the computer but from what I see you can't do this for the upgrade.... Bummer!

I downloaded the update onto my computer, but can't run the file. I am running Mac OS X. My computer won't open the file (just the PDF on how to install it). :(

Going to talk to my techs at work tomorrow.

  11. Your regular vet should be able to do a standard dental clean and any extractions necessary. The cost would depend on the extent of the work and what is included in the cost - such as a pre-anasthetic blood test as the dentals are done under a GA - and pain relief. Expect to pay anything up to $600 if extractions are necessary. There can be a fair bit of variation in the price - some people ring around a few vets - but you need to find out what is included.

Whether the teeth need to be cleaned yearly is dependant on the individual dog - some need more regular cleans than others. A teeth check should be part of the dog's yearly check up. I think bones are the best things to clean the teeth IMO - Dentastix and Greenies etc freshen the breath but I don't think they do much to clean the teeth :) .

especially when they gulp them down as fast as mine do. No point in them at all really.

Same with any chicken bones. They take just two bites then swallow. Way too scary to feed them these...

  12. Any luck? I had my boys baby canines taken out late last year..first ones ever..and trust me I did everything I could to loosen the buggers!! Some teeth are just stubben!!

I have a baby here who is 5 months old this week and still has her upper baby canines. The adult ones are coming through. She is booked into the vet for Friday but would like to avoid it. Lots of games of tug, and bones aren't making any difference at the moment.

Fingers crossed here. I really don't want her to have a GA. Anything else worked for others?

  13. I had a great puppy pack from my vet that he gives his breeders when they get their 6 week vaccination and microchip. There was a great little book in the pack about how to look after your puppy. It was an excellent little book. (The pack was from a worming company). Proplan make them too.

Other things that I included in my folder were grooming tips (double coated breed) and a list of essentials to get for the puppy - like collar and lead, bedding etc. I also put in some breed specific information.

  14. Parkeyre - I notice you are in SA. My vet is actually offering them as puppy packs when you get your litter vaccinated, microchipped and health checked. The one I had came with a puppy booklet, worming tablet and free insurance for 6 weeks (came from sentinel). There was another company doing them through this vet now as well. Really good idea. My recent arrival here came with a puppy pack from proplan which included insurance and sample puppy food.

PM me and I'll tell you the vet.

  15. sounds like a dodgy puppy buyer I recently had to deal with. We had someone in our breed that was buying puppies and on-selling them. When they couldn't sell them quickly at a profit, they would ask to send them back to the breeder with a refund with claims of "not getting along with the children" etc

Not your breed, but PM me the details and I'll let you know if it is the same person.

  16. Right, did some portraits today, colours look great on my monitor but a bit flat on my laptop, so hopefully they aren't really that way. My new favourite thing is fog, the colours are really good, no shadows and with the 50mm wide open plenty of light.

All are manual focus on my 50mm 1.7 prime, pentax K7 body, all ISO 100. F is between 1.7 and 2.8, camera doesn't record which as the lens can't talk to the camera. They are also deliberately "cool" I didn't want any warming so no temp increase.

One I've taken about a month ago, a DOLers dog at herding, SS 1/800, ISO 100 80-200 zoom at 80 I think.

There's my girl...... colour appears more vibrant on her body in this than what she is I think - although her face is accurate I reckon. (On my mac laptop). not sure if this helps you at all.

  17. If you check the left hand banner on DOGZOLINE you will find a heading under Poinstcore for Show Results. Click on that and you will find that there were 5 mid week All Breeds shows in the NT, NSW & Qld. We regularly support the shows in Alice Springs. Gibbs was awarded Best in Group under Gundog specialist Mrs Fay Harris, giving him the challenge needed. With that final requirement in hand, and Gibbs' very sizable collection of Best Exhibit in Show certificates, his application form was lodged at the Dogs SA office on Friday, 6th July at 13.50pm by my receipt. Incidentally, the title application was supported by 3 of his metropolitan All Breeds Best Exhibit in Show certificates. That he may have been the first here is not important. That a dog of his calibre has been acknowledged by so many judges is a tribute to him.

Gibbs IS an outstanding IWS and Gundog, as is indicated by his ranking of #2 Gundog in Australia and #1 in South Australia in the Dogzonline Showdog of the Year Pointscore. He was #1 AKC TopDog when he came to us in 2008 and was invited to The Garden in 2008 and 2009.

We been dedicated to the Irish Water Spaniel for more than 30 years and make no apology for being immensely proud of our dog.

As you should be very proud. My apologies - I thought the person meant the dog had been awarded in South Australia. I don't think anyone would be saying that a dog worthy of qualifying for the supreme isn't worthy of the title, which wasn't my intention. You should be very proud of your dog with such a list of great achievements. Obviously a worthy example for the title.
