Collie Rough. Why does no one ever think of these lovely family dogs anymore? They used to be so popular and are now almost a rare breed. They tick all the boxes and are easy to train.

I've had two different vets tell me no bones until 6 months of age.

I know there are breeders that do differently.

Rude competitors who do not acknowledge you with as much as a smile when you offer them congratulations after they beat you for best of breed/ group or best of anything!

Ditto......that happened to me over the weekend.......said congratulations twice before I realised I was just being plainly ignored.....very weird

Not showing at the moment with my girl out of coat - but have been visiting.

Tried being friendly and said hello to an interstate exhibitor visiting the shows on the weekend. Complimented them on their dog and asked who it was. (Didn't have a catalogue). I was looked up and down and The reply I got was "Who are you?"

Well - obviously a nobody..... I crawled back in my box and went back to chatting to the friendly exhibitors. Had a good laugh about this later.

no coat for the sheltie here. She seems to like the cold, but she'll curl up on blankets on colder nights.

I am coming to SACA, with Rommy to help out at the show. I have my fingers well and truly crossed that the email is accurate and that we can have a short go at ducks or sheep.

Group 5 didn't finish all the breeds today until well after lunch apparently, let alone group itself. (Old English onward were after lunch). Last group to finish. With two shows on tomorrow for group 5 - I am suspecting that there won't be a lot that will want to "come and try", especially if it is wet and they are a double coated breed. I am hoping that means that means Rommy and I can "have a go".

Love the black paisley - wish that had been around when I was ordering. I still love my bag though.

I have found that sheltie fur sticks to the canvas part of the bag.... adds to the character I guess. Also shows I am using it quite a bit.

I also spoke to Mel today - and whilst the email says "training and come and try day" for this Saturday - Mel tells me it is strictly for dogs that have had no exposure to the stock before, that are wanting to try in the morning and do the instinct test in the afternoon.

Not sure if anyone else can clarify this, as the original email says something different to what Mel has said. I'm heading out anyway, to watch some of the international - but would like to give Rommy a run.

RJ I have the email from Piper - well I did but I skimmed it because Kenz is out of action and I don't have my laptop functioning at the moment to be able to go back and check. I thought if there was an instinct test this weekend and I was intending on heading out to SACA this weekend for another reason I might as well coincide the two and come and watch the herding for a bit.

Am hoping to head out as well.

Everyone should be aware though, that the Autumn International is on as well and is drawing a very large number of entries. There are over 200 dogs in group 5 alone! - A large number for recent times. There are two shows running for Group 5 on Sat - so there will be people around all day. Parking will be interesting. When there are high numbers, there are cars everywhere - even all the way over at the herding rings.

There is no regular training down here right now Cass who ran training in the hills moved to tasmania a few months ago. We had a clinic 3 weeks ago and there is a come and try day in June. I am not on the herding dog club committee so not sure what else they have planned. I am fairly sure they were trying to get some training days planned.

I get jealous of you guys that have access to stock and can train your own dogs. There is no point really in entering tests or trials here - there will have been only one opportunity for a lesson at a come and try day (so a 10 minute lesson) between the last trial and the next one. No point. It is a pity.

I am trying to find the thread that was on here about the research into early desexing and hip displaysia (amongst other issues). There was a link to a science paper a grad student had written linking a whole lot of research about the benefits and pitfalls of early desexing. One of the outcomes of desexing before maturity was a huge increase in HD - even from dogs whose parent's both had perfect hip scores. Was to do with bone maturity etc. Can't find it at the moment which is a pity. Anyone else remember where it was?

Shetland Sheepdog - One, but can't we do it together? I don't want to do it by myself. Its more fun in a group and I'll tell everyone about it afterwards.

Hmmmm- wonder if the 6 and then 4 shelties entered know that they aren't going to get Challenge or BOB points for those shows.....

It is interesting seeing dogs entered in a breed which has a National on on the same weekend, within the 1000km limit.

who in the world is the sheltie entered when the NATIONAL is across town on the same weekend???!!!!!!!

Hope they know that there are no challenge points being awarded. Possibly a token entry in support of the club maybe?

There are, apparently a couple of shelties entered in the show here in Adelaide this weekend as well - people who got their dates wrong... oops.

I'd be asking the vet to help with the service as well. MOst are pretty good stud masters if you don't know of a breeder nearby who can help out.

Anyone have an alternative to a shetland sheepdog? In terms of character, size, temperament etc - it fits them absolutely perfectly. They don't like the coat though - they think it is too much work and would be an issue with child in the family with allergies. I personally think a sheltie coat isn't hard to manage at all and doesn't take that much work. It seems to repel dirt and water and my girl only sheds after her season. So - a shetland sheepdog with a non-shedding, shorter coat.

Any suggestions...

Hey jr_inoz - just thought I'd stick my head in here and suggest that they do some investigating around what exactly causes the allergies for their child. As other posters have mentioned, it's different for everyone. I've been allergic to everything except poodles since .. forever; was hospitalised with asthma for the first time at 18 months old, and have been unable to tolerate any animals since then. Hence having had poodles my whole life.

I've had SO many people tell me that I'd be fine with Bichon Frises, Wheatens, Japanese Spitz, Greyhounds.. you name it. Anything that someone has heard is low shedding or hypo-allergenic, has been suggested to me. I just want to stress that it's a completely individual thing; if I or my family had trusted peoples' advice and suggestions we would've been in a horrible situation of re-homing or something. We thought that poodle crosses would be ok too, and some are (eg my poodle x Mimi) but some aren't (eg mum's poodle x maltese) - I know I'm preaching to the choir here about the risks of oodles and coat type. But just make sure that these people get their kid to spend some time with various breeds to work out whether they'll really be ok with the breeds they're considering :)

I have a friend with some allergies - he is fine with both my sheltie, and the one that stayed with me. His allergies play up big time around my friend's pedigree standard poodle. Go figure. I've tried explaining this to the family concerned.

Or possibly Chinese Crested Hairless, although they need a surprising amount of grooming, more along the lines of skin care.

Iggy makes sense - one of the sheltie breeders here also has Italian greyhounds. Love these little dogs.

that's my old D400 (but the 7D fits just as well) in there, plus the speedlite and 18-200mm (it would fit the 70-200 quite well I think - if it was the sigma one, I reckon you could keep it on the body, don't think the canon one would fit though with it still on the body - would fit in the bag). That is an ipad at the back.

What is the opinion on titres? Should we as pet owners be pushing for vets to have these more readily available? I know many pet owners who have never heard of titre testing an before the start of the year I myself was among them. Is this a good way to make an informed decision on weather a dog needs a vaccination?

In SA, the only way to get a titre test done is to have the blood work sent to the US. As far as I know, you can't get titre testing done in a lab in Australia. There are quite a few vets who are happy to send the lab work off though. Cost me the same price as the vaccination to have the titre test. Was happy with that - especially peace of mind. My girl is much better (less allergies) without annual vaccination. Her immunity is the highest level.

You are going for a long weekend - be aware - that on the weekends, if you are flying Qantas, the dog must be flying before 3pm. (So you can get on the 2:30pm flight. Their office hours for the freight company that handles qantas pets is open 6am - 3pm only on weekends. ) You can pick the dog up after 3pm, but you can't fly it out after 3pm from anywhere.

look up dogtainers online - their website has lots of good FAQs that help. I also rang them the other day because I am arranging transport for a puppy and they helped me through the process step by step.

(glad I did, because I was not aware that Qantas require a vet certificate for any puppy between 8 weeks and 12 weeks of age, whilst Virgin doesn't -so I need to get that organised too).

Kirislin - I love your photos.... what is your current kit? I am trying to work out what I really need, not what I just want.

I've got the 7D and 70-200 2.8 IS, 100mm macro and the 50mm 1.4 I sometimes get tempted to get something wider like the 17-70 or 24-70 but so far have resisted. I'd also love something longer, maybe up to 400mm, but again, I've resisted. I have quite a bit of flexibility with what I have.

Meant to say, I could have saved alot of money and not got the IS with my 70-200 I nearly always have it turned off.

It is interesting what you say about the 70-200 IS - I keep forgetting to turn it on on the 18-200IS

I have the 50mm 1.8 and also the 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS - I like this lens and it has become my "everyday" lens. I know in low light the 70-200mm f2.8 will be really good, and am looking to get the sigma version (cos I can't afford the canon version) - I had a play with this last weekend and liked it - but it was outdoors and in full sun. I'd like to see how it goes indoors. I'm going to take my 7D with the 18-200 on it to some basketball in a week or so and see how it performs. With the improved ISO on the 7D over what I had, it will be interesting to see the difference.

A friend suggested I get the 85mm - but I am not sure how much I would use it. I am only an amateur. She is semi-pro.

something to keep in mind, even if you dont want to buy from the sellers listed, armed with their prices for comparison, you can always ask your local retailer if they can match it. :D Which I've just been stupid enough to do, only to be told YES they can. DOH!

DCW had an even cheaper price than Camera Pro and Diamonds when I bought my 7D - well, they dropped their price to below the one of Camera Pro, just after I rang up Diamonds and asked if they would price match on the CP price..... bummer - but worth keeping in mind. I suspect they are the cheapest, so go armed with their price when you want to negotiate a cheaper price.

Not a camera store but I got my local Harvey Norman to price match I think it was digital camera store prices and on a brand new released product. You can only ask the question.

I am amazed you got them to price match. Given their 7D was $289 over the RRP of $1800 for the 7D, they said that there was no way they could price match and that my quotes must have been incorrect.
