  1. Is there room to slip a pair of small sharp scissors between the fur and the glue? You may be able to gently trim it out... or a vet may be able to run a scalpel around the sides to gently cut it out - especially if your girl is OK with having her paws examined...

  2. An awesome effort by all involved and great teamwork to at least make this part of Jed's nightmare situation go a whole lot more smoothly.

Kudos to each and every person involved - you are all legends!

  3. I just can't get my head around the tragedy of all this... it's my worst nightmare as a dog owner. I get chills down my spine just trying to comprehend the magnitude of losing 12 of your beloved furkids in one tragic hour. My very best thoughts are heading Jed's way that she makes a full physical recovery from her own injuries - and that the inevitable emotional scars she will suffer will also become less painful over time.

I do not know Jed personally, but as a regular DOL addict, I have read her postings on many topics - and she always makes sense, never gets into "fights" about the silly stuff, and is always there with the best workable advice whenever anyone needs it. The light will be dimmer in here until she comes back to us...

Now, as some of you may already suspect, I have a slight problem with giving "respect" to others - especially faceless and nameless people in the ether of an internet forum... but Jed is one person that immediately had, and will always have, my utmost respect. She personifies dignity and levelheadedness in this crazy old world that we live in.

I once said to my mother that she made me a better person just because I know her... and I also think Jed is one of those people...

  4. My Labrador, Trouble, is the noisiest when she's playing... so is Zeddy my other girl - and sometimes James the foster boy gets some noise going too...

You learn to tell what's a play growl and what's not pretty quickly... *grin*

Some people are just so precious about their dogs' interaction with others... I bet your girl ends up well socialised and friendly - and that other lady's dog becomes a nasty mollycoddled snapping thing that is frightened of everything and everyone...

  5. How do you tell if someone is thinking like an animal? I was reading one of Temple Grandin's books and she was describing how she would notice things animals noticed because she would think like them. I don't think like an animal the way she does in the slightest, but I still notice a lot of the things she mentions because I watch where animals are looking. What's the difference between thinking like an animal and having a good eye for detail or patterns, for example?

I always liked watching Kelly Marks on tv. Whatever that X factor that some people have with animals is, she definitely has it. It impressed me that she could go from all gentle, careful desensitisation and counter conditioning to giving the horse a boot with the same animal and just overcome some residual hangup the horse had. How did she know when it was appropriate to switch tactics so suddenly? She never messed around trying things that didn't work. She would change her approach quite wildly for different horses without any real explanation and it always worked.

Exactly... thinking like them means noticing what they notice, and instinctively sensing what is going to happen next - some people are born with the sense, and others may learn it. Spend enough time with lots of different animals of the species you like, and you definitely pick up on how they think and react normally. For the "not normal" ones, most of the same instinct is there, but may be masked slightly by other learned behaviours - a keen eye and good sense will see you through in most cases.

Loads of patience is also good to have... *grin*... all of the really good trainers or "whisperers" rarely do their block with frustration... have you noticed that?

  6. I think it's more of a mutual respect thing with dog/animal "whisperers"... body language showing that you are calm and not feeling threatened, or being threatening towards, the animal in question goes a long way towards a successful interaction.

Being able to "think" like the type of animal you are interacting with also helps. As well as knowing the basics about their body language.

Has anyone seen how Cesar Milan wags his butt when approaching some dogs? I've tried it, and it gets some amazing results. I don't like his hissing thing for correction though - I get better results with a short, sharp "uhh"...

  7. If you are looking for a rescue dog and want a reference for a really good rescue nearish to you (she's near Wollongong), I would recommend getting in touch with Cazstaff on this forum - she does an awesome job with her rescues, and will be able to help you with any questions you may have about getting a rescue dog - and she may even have one that will fit your needs...

Are you looking for any particular type of dog?

  8. Great - the owners of the dogs said they'd contain the dogs to the back part of the yard to stop them reacting if anotherdog or person stuck part of themselves over or under the current fence - and now they have a stupid child hanging over the back fence aggravating the dogs and the dogs get locked up??

Pretty soon we are all going to have to have massive cage enclosures in every yard that has a dog - to prevent the public from being stupid and getting bitten for invading the animals' territory uninvited...

*shakes head at political correctness protecting the stupid minorities*

  9. Definitely your major nasties will be ticks and cane toads... I went to school in Murwillumbah, and my folks still live in Burringbar...

The occasional snake - brown, black, death adders, etc - could be an issue if you will be on acreage...

However, the area is definitely God's own corner of the planet - you'll love it there!

  10. So... have we started to see any action yet? I still want to know how many, what colour, what sex, etc... and pictures!!

I'm sure a few registered breeders here have had an accidental litter in their history - and I haven't seen any indication from jamieson that she doesn't care about the wellbeing of ALL her dogs - even the unborn ones. Some may be jumping to conclusions about what will happen after the pups are born...

Oh - and we still don't know Daddy's name... *grin*

  11. Pearl is just building her fan base for the finale :dancingelephant: Hope all goes well for mum during the whelping and we look foward to seeing some photos of her gorgeous lab babies :birthday:

Just what I was thinking... building her fan base before she puts on the show... lol!

C'mon Pearl - my workmates think I'm mad because I keep telling them that I check this thread first thing in the morning and first thing when I get home from work... and sometimes before I go to bed - for good measure...
