When my dogs have ear infections, the regime has been:

- clean the ears once daily with EpiOtic

- apply 1m per ear of Dermotic twice daily

Carry this out for 14 days and then recheck with the vet

If they are clear at the recheck then

- keep going with the Dermotic for another 7 days

If the ears are not clear at the recheck but have shown improvement

- clean the ears three times per week with EpiOtic for another 7 days

- keep going with the Dermotic for another 14 days

Recheck with the vet.

Repeat this last block until the ears are free of infection then

- clean once a week with EpiOtic as a preventative

(we've never had a dog that hasn't shown improvement, but I believe they change the Dermotic for another drug if that is the case.)

Aha - I've never been told to starve the dog but to feed a bland food (preferably the one the vet sells!) or chicken and rice.

Next question - if slippery elm is going to work for the runs, how quickly will it work? Or, to ask the same question a different way, when do you decide this isn't enough and the dog needs to go to the vet?

For example, if I feed my dog twice a day and give him a tsp of slippery elm at each meal, when should I see an improvement?

Any suggestions on how to persuade a fussy eater to take slippery elm? I just tried mixing a teaspoon into his dinner and he left half of it. Just realised it was probably because of the slippery elm.

There are a few studies around now that suggest it may be beneficial for male dogs to be left entire.

What is your opinion on desexing male dogs (pet only obviously)?

Coda, my 8 year old GSD, has arthritis in one knee.

Recently we were at the vet for some pain relief, and the vet was talking about the options we have to treat him.

One suggestion was a tablet that is given monthly. (Well, you give 2 doses fortnightly for the first month and then monthly thereafter.) The dog has to have a blood test to check kidney function before starting treatment.

Has anyone tried this?

Mazda is insured with PetPlan and they have paid out both times he has eaten something and needed stomach surgery. The first claim took longer than the second. I would recommend them based on my experiences.

Another vote for PetPlan. When Mazda swallowed a piece of plastic and required emergency surgery, the bill came to over $4,000. And they paid it without question. My premium is $50 pm (he is an English Setter(.

I *think* the exterior may be shade cloth but I'm not 100% sure. Whatever it is, it has lasted very well.

We use it with no issues, as a top up for Sentinel when required.

Another vote for using prong collars when needed here. My dogs weigh more than me when walking them together and I like the feeling of security the prong gives me if needed. Like, for instance, we meet a pussy cat.
