  1. FIRST ON 7: A five-year-old Gold Coast boy has had extensive plastic surgery after half of his ear was ripped off in a terrifying dog attack.

His mother was just metres away when the animal launched onto the little boy.

"[i'm] a little bit hurt but I'm okay," Kellen Cormie told 7News.

He had been heading to the shops, with his mother and twin brother when they went next door to thank the neighbours for mowing his family's lawn.

Then their dog charged at little Kellen.

"He knocked [him] over, launched onto his ear," Kellen's mother Kay said.

The owner came out and ripped the dog's mouth open. His mother could do little.

"You can't have a dog that can kill, and that was what he was trying to do," Kay said.

"[There was] blood everywhere, he was just screaming and crying."

Much of the boy's left ear was ripped off.

    Q: Were you scared [Kellen]?

A: Yes it was a bad dog.

The animal also mauled his side and shoulder.

Kay grabbed her two boys and the ear and rushed to hospital.

Kellen's father was told of the attack over the phone. He feared his son had been killed.

"There was relief involved because I thought the worst," Scott Cormie said.

A team of plastic surgeons spent four hours re-attaching Kellen's ear.

"On a scale of injury this is devastating particularly for a young boy," Dr Justin Perron said. "It's quite a ripped tear of tissue so hard to say if it will work."

Kellen's parents had feared an attack like this could happen.

They have warned both boys many times before, not to go near their neighbour's dog.

"If he wasn't here, I just can't describe it," Kay said.

  2. The public will be able to buy anything they want. They will just need to research and won't be able to just walk by the pet shop look in the window and go "Oh I'll take that one please, The maremma cross. A maremma is just like a golden retriever right?" (I am using a real life scenario here) then 12 months later there it goes into the local shelter. I personally think it is a good thing.

  3. No I don't think this owner should be allowed the dog back after reading about numerous incidences of the dogs escaping and attacking other dogs. I also think the dog is a danger to the community given it has been in more then one attack and it would be unlikely that the dog would be a good candidate for rehoming.

  4. Unless you have hard evidence that his dogs never had done it you really can't say they have or haven't been blooded. Not having a go at you or your friend

What's 'soft evidence'? You are casting judgment on a man you did not know. This man was well known to our family for years, a public servant, and an animal lover generally. His views on anti-blooding were associated with equally strong views about the strategy of keeping greys hungry as appalling, and not destroying greys because they proved poor runners.

Hard evidence would be video tapes of the dogs training without live baiting etc. Do I believe there are people out there that do train their dogs without using live baiting. Absolutely but I won't just flat out believe someone based on just being told that. As I said there were people on the video that were outspoken about the use of live baits saying they didn't do it, didn't know anyone who did and that it was illegal to do so. Yet they did know people and they themselves did have dogs that were live baited. The industry as a whole has been tarnished and it will be hard to sort the wheat from the chaff.

  5. The hard concrete evidence isn't there as the "blooding" training method has been illegal for quite some time and despite rumours and innuendo throughout the greyhound racing industry on this training method, until the Four Corners program, there was supposedly no evidence that this cruel and inhumane training method was being used, so how would GAP or any other greyhound rescue know what training methods were being used. Even if they knew/suspected, as long as the greyhound being assessed for rehoming passed their tests that all that should matter, not the training method used.

That's fair comment. Which is why I welcome an enquiry. Not just in Victoria.

I'd generalized from a trainer who was vocal in how he had no truck with blooding...& he shared that with his network of friends. I'd just assumed those trainers offering dogs to GAP were of his same mind. That's why I agreed for my small dog to be a small dog tester for GAP. Only grey I witnessed being a bit twitchy with the small dog, was one that come thro' the RSPCA & was being given the GAP assessment protocol.

I have to be honest, tho', if this issue had arisen at that time, I would have withdrawn my small dog as a tester for GAP until an expert enquiry was over. Which may well conclude what you've said.... or not. Certainly no GAP grey in the small sample I saw gave any worry at all.

Unless you have hard evidence that his dogs never had done it you really can't say they have or haven't been blooded. Not having a go at you or your friend but even on the four corners program when asked most of them said they didn't do it and and were vocal against the practice. It was only when they were found out that they took to the no comment lines.

The issue above is the reason why no one will know either way which dogs have or haven't been blooded except for the ones that we saw in those videos. We also know there were many dogs on the property but we still have no idea which of them have or haven't been blooded the only ones who do know are the ones who are facing charges/investigation and I honestly don't think they will come completely clean on everything.

  6. Animals Australia haven't taken the law into their own hands, they've only exposed the failings of the law and self regulation. I did wonder though if those caught will use as their defence that the video was taken without permission and by trespass.

As I see it they kinda have taken the law into their own hands by setting up hidden cameras on the properties which comes down to trespass as I am sure they didn't have permission to be on the land. As much as I am happy that this has been exposed and people can now do something about it I kinda don't want to go down the road of letting anyone set up cameras on my property regardless if I am law abiding I will be ok as it is an invasion of privacy.

I can't see how the videos will be able to be used in the courts as evidence and the media trial has already began so I can see them using that as a means to try and get let off.

  7. If anything having my dog helped me with the total upheaval my life was in the first couple of months as my Missy dog helped me keep myself sane. I was able to get out and enjoy the sun and have some down time away from Bea and this helped me get over my postnatal depression. Yeah she did some annoying things like snore really loudly down a corridor that echoes almost everytime I wanted a nap but the positives she gave me far outweighed the negatives.

  8. Someone could look on here and assume all Australians think X way, I don’t think we are a representative sample here. I would assume the same goes for OS forums.

Joe Blow with his off lead dog is not represented very well here, the general public don’t tend to wind up here 9and stay) unless they’re a certain type of person who keeps their dogs in check fairly well.

The boards/FB groups I am on one is made up by mostly Germans, another one is based around one breed that has people from Sweden,Finland and Norway. The other is made up by lots of people from lots of other EU countries and the trend is the same.

  9. How do you measure something like 'far more responsible dog owners and general public' in Europe Lhok? What are they doing differently to us?

Well for example the whole don't worry he/she is friendly wouldn't fly there from the boards I am on they leash their dogs or bring them under control when someone approaches. They take dog ownership very seriously. In most European countries they don't spay/neuter their dogs and they are able to manage them in a way they don't have heaps of opps litters. I have also been told from my Swedish friends that they wouldn't dream of just walking up to some random dog and start to pat it and they wouldn't allow children to do it either and it isn't just limited to just my friends it seems across the board they are more socially responsible (off topic but my Swedish friends think it is socially not responsible that we drive over 80km/h lol)

  10. Its the stupid government & council rules that cause this to become more commonplace.

If dogs were allowed in more public places, on lead of course, they would be far more social & less likely to attack.

English & European countries don't get the problems we have here to this extent because dogs are welcome on transport, in taxis, in cafes, in hotels & pubs, in some shops & markets & they are not cooped up in the yard & house not mixing & meeting people like they are here.

Australia is so dog intolerant & unfriendly it shocks me

Poor dogs aren't allowed anywhere except unsafe off leash dog parks & a few beaches.

Europe doesn't have the same problems as us because they also have far more responsible dog owners and general public then we do here. It isn't just because the dogs are allowed in more areas then here but it is part of the package.

  11. I find it a bit hypocritical of PETA to slam Palin yet say nothing about the photo that Ellen showed the world of another child standing on a dog.

As to the actual dog in the photo, he could move if he didn't want to be stood on, but I do agree that she should have said not to do it to begin with.

  12. My old girl Miss, used to act all dejected and would take herself outside and put herself in her kennel run if I had my school uniform on. If I had jeans on she would stay all cosy in her bed unless I had my handbag on then she would do the same if I was wearing my uniform.

She wouldn't bat an eyelid if I had other clothes though, unless I walked out to the laundry and opened the cupboard then I was greeted with a black labxkelpie missile coming flying at me (the food/treats and leads all lived out in the laundry cupboard).

  13. Friends of mine have just imported the first Estrela Mountain Dog into the country :) he's lovely.

Actually there was one in the country 3 years ago that ended up in a pound then a lady in NZ got him so he went there :)

    --Lhok

Why would someone go through all the costs of importing a dog only to have it ending up in a pound? That just seems so bizarre to me. :(

He came over with his family which had kids, the dad wanted the dog the wife didn't and he also didn't cope with the perth heat. They shaved him down and his coat came back a nightmare and then he ended up in the pound from what I have been told.
