  1. Apparently the guy is deaf which is why he didn't speak and made that wailing noise. Also not only do they steal a puppy that is screaming/yelping they man handle it assault the guy who owns the pup and run off. The poor guy must really love his dog above all else because he leaves all everything behind to chase the people running off with the pup.

Oh some of the comments further down on the story say the pup was given to him by a local who saw how heartbroken he was after loosing his other dog.

  2. To be fair at least one of the rangers in those photos comes across as a complete wanker who thinks he is a law unto himself right down to his saunter.

The outrage is about the rangers driving their truck to below the waterline, getting it bogged down and having it have salt damage.

They (the rangers) also were extreme in the way they handled the dude, that choke hold (the ranger who did it does martial arts and should know better) was dangerous to use in the conditions they were in and shouldn't have been done regardless of if the dude became aggressive or not.

  3. Considering this was all over the local buy swap sell, no one has yet been charged with anything or so it was said in many of the comments.

This was the post in the Facebook group with the photos posted above.

  4. Thanks for the suggestions guys!

In terms of going overseas, it's only 10 days in quarantine now, the main consideration would be cost as it is a few thousand each way. But most likely would stay with me. My already gets 2hrs of exercise on average plus agility training so that wouldn't be an issue.

Whippet- I am not sure if they would be robust enough? Do they generally chase balls and enjoy swimming and lots of exercise?

They also want a quiet dog that isn't going to bark a lot as they are in a town house type situation so that's why kelpie isn't on the list! Otherwise I agree would be a good fit.

They are after a fairly easily trained dog so unfortunately I think a beagle and most of the terriers would be beyond them as they've only had experience with gundogs and working breeds who live to please you (or get a treat!).

It is only 10 days in quarantine after the quarantine process has started in the country of origin.

  5. On a property that friends of my fathers have they worked on clearing out the rabbits and rats. They also had a stable colony of feral cats that they TNR.

It worked to get rid of the feral cats but the foxes and wild dogs moved in so now they run livestock guardian dogs to protect their stock while they work out what to do about this next problem.

  6. Sorry, I did not know a Sled Dog was an official breed of dog. I would feel sorry for a horse or mule to do that race.

2.4 km would be nothing to a horse pulling a kick bike and would more then likely get there much faster then the dogs

A mule on the other hand would probably not even walk past the start line because we all know how much they prefer to do what they want when they want to.

Nice racing Ronin, love the burst of speed when the dane went past.

  7. I understand the enormity of it, no one wants a child to be left maim for life.

But there also has to be some personal responsibility here as well. Having one adult to supervise eight children playing in a street is more then a bit dumb to me. Also teaching children they can't go where ever they want and do whatever they want and to look after themselves by teaching them to think before they act can't hurt either.

Yes at eight years old I did dumb stuff but never would I have approached dogs behind a fence my parents drilled it into me that dogs bite and even though I love dogs and was completely wanting to go pat every dog I saw I knew that dogs bit and to stay away from dogs I didn't know.

  8. Kids are unpredictable, what if a child made it in to the yard. I wonder if they would have made it out again?

Is seems an extreme reaction for a dog to maul a tiny hand so much it had to be removed!

If the gap under the fence was small, and the child could only fit so much of their hand under it. The dog grabbed it and pulled it under that could have severed the hand.

I do wonder how far anyone has to go to prevent people from entering yards that the person entering has no place to be. I have a metal fence that is over 6 foot tall and the gates are chained and locked. Yet I have entered the place and found people in my yard..

  9. The dogs were behind their fence though, I am sure the owners thought they were suitably contained as in they can't escape and cause problems.

Yes kids do dumb stuff and yes you can tell them many times not to do things and they will anyway. I don't think the dog owners should be blamed though. You don't know if the dogs were super aggressive, I know many a dog wouldn't like someone sticking their limbs into their property. It also is a huge jump to say BAD DOG for attacking a child but if that person sticking their hand into the yard was an adult or someone about to intrude and steal something everyone would be saying good dog.

I do honestly think parents should be more proactive with teaching personal responsibility and that their children can't just help themselves to everything they want. (I am a parent of small children)

  10. I used crates on three separate dogs for all different reasons.

Treble had one because he couldn't be allowed to stress out as he would crash hard, it was awesome that he liked being in the crate because he had an epic nosebleed that meant he couldn't move much at all otherwise it would free bleed.

Raiden had his crate and it was lucky that I did crate him as it allowed me to notice that he couldn't hold his bladder at all and he vomited often and as a result we worked out that something wasn't right with him.

Missy was crated often once she was older because she was suffering dementia and she felt safer in there.

  11. I wouldn't have recommended a basenji I was at a dog show once and hear an awful noise so I went looking and it was coming from a little black and white basenji. Before I knew they could make such a wake the dead scream I had often thought about one for myself but after hearing that nope

I am still pushing the rescue line Perse so I will show them those links :)

Haredown I thought the same thing about the wooly breeds, I wouldn't know what it would cost to get a dog groomed and clipped so I can't really give them a ball park figure and I know they wouldn't be keen to do it themselves as they have already stated it.

  12. It is humans who have an issue with debarking, the dogs have no idea they have been done they still bark but with very little noise comes out so they are still doing what comes naturally.

    .

I had ideas that debarking was barbaric & cruel. Until I ran into 2 (show) tibbies that were debarked & I didn't know it. I seriously remarked to the owners ...where did their tibs get those sexy voices. Much laughter, they'd been debarked. They had voices & could express themselves well, but the high pitches had been removed, leaving them with husky but clear voices that couldn't carry far.

I think it's better called 'pitch-lowering' .... because that's what it is, not removal of voice. Humans have 'pitch-lowering', too. Except it's done via speech therapy. Some women in the public sphere, like newsreaders etc, have speech therapy to lower the pitch of their voice. Obviously dogs can't have speech therapy... only surgery.

A famous example was Margaret Thatcher. When she started to rise in politics, her very high pitched voice was annoying. One of her colleagues remarked that her voice could kill a passing bird. She had speech therapy & her pitch was lowered. She might still have annoyed people for all sorts of things .... but her high pitched voice was gone. And passing birds were safe.

Sorry Mita, but what you said about Thatcher reminds me of this

from singing in the rain

  13. Had another long chat to them about it. They aren't opposed to wooly coated breeds as long as they can find a groomer as they don't really want to clip the dog themselves. They are fine with a dog that needs a little bit of grooming as in run a brush or coat over the coat everyday.

I have lent them a bunch of dog books I had about feeding, grooming and general dog care and have given them a copy of the perfect puppy by gwen bailey. So I hope that will give them a bit more perspective when it comes to owning a dog.

I have still being promoting fostering for a group. The guy is a bit on the cheap side when it comes to things which is never good when animals are concerned.

  14. I'm gently pushing adults or at least a dog around the 18 month mark. I just don't think they have the time for a pup and all the things that come with it.

I know the list is hard to fill, and I did say to them maybe you should stick to your plushies

My hubby is going to have a chat to the guy today although from chatting to hubby last night the guy is pretty set on a dachshund and the girl wants something larger so I can see this being a hassle..

I have done what I was asked to so far in writing a list with greyhound at the top and they will be looking it over at some stage.

Please still feel free to comment as the more I can give them the less they are likely to go out and impulse purchase.

  15. Had a longer chat to them today about it.

Drooling is definitely something they don't want as they don't want to step in it on the floor or have the drool mark if the dog puts their head on their pants.

As far as dog training goes they would be going to classes, but the dog wouldn't be getting mental stimulation in regards to trick training or anything like that.

The hair shedding is an issue so far in that the girlfriend works in a professional area and wouldn't like to lint roller her clothes before she goes to work.

Grooming has to be low maintenance as in zoom groom and done.

I mentioned maybe fostering before they got a dog but they were concerned that they might get a dog that has behaviour issues they would be ill equipped to deal with.

The girlfriend isn't keen on short faced dogs or bull breeds due to them being a little scary. (I know they aren't but at least they are honest)

    --Lhok

  16. Labs do shed but I don't have to clean up after mine every day. Guess it depends onw what they think is too much shedding.

How much dog experiance do your friends have, are they new to dogs in general?

Very new to dogs. As far as pet ownership is concerned only one of them has had pets which was an elderly cat that came to live with them.

  17. Hi all

I've been tasked by some friends of mine to come up with a list of dog breed suggestions for them. They are new to owning dogs. They work a fair bit but one of them works from home.

The things they have said they would like are

    No drooling

Smooth coat if possible as while they aren't clean freaks they don't want to have to clean the floor everyday

On the larger side (although one of them like dachshunds)

Easy going so nothing that requires heaps and heaps of training

    No guardian breeds

and a dog that would be happy going for an hour walk in the afternoon for exercise.

I have been thinking about suggesting a greyhound but I'm not 100% that they would be a good fit.

    Any suggestions?
