  1. On the weekend I was able to attend my first show it went sort of like this..

On Saturday I was nervous so I got to the grounds early, I unpacked my equipment from my car and made my way to a perfect spot near the ring. Set up was a breeze and I had some time on my hands so I went for a wander to look at the competition. There was plenty of beautiful dogs the tallest hounds to the tiny chihuahua, on my way back to my camp I got myself a coffee and had a look at the schedule.

The day passed and there was much to be done I waited till my breed was called and took off to the ring. Camera in hand I got plenty of pictures to look at and saw some very good looking dogs.

At the end of the day I was exhausted but happy.

I think I will get into showing.. once I get my show quality dog

p.s Thanks to all who made my day letting me photo your beautiful dogs and asking all my newbie questions

  2. it was filmed from a bunch of countries, but mostly (from what I can tell) the USA a lot of the imagery comes from PETA and HSUS (again my own conclusions) as stated in the credits at the end.

  3. Surely not all food animals are treated badly? And as for the way dogs are treated, I saw the bit where the dog was thrown into the garbage truck, and I am sure that if that happened here many people would be stopping to save that dog. I'm still ashamed to be human though.

I think we like to think animal abuse like the dog in the dumpster only happens in third world countries or in the middle East, but it doesn't. It happens everywhere, I remember in Sydney maybe last year the year before a kitten was set a light and thrown into a mail box and apparently a few people were involved. It happens here in the Western countries too. Just the other month a cockatoo in my area was nailed to a sign post with drivers driving past the bird and no one stopping. Abuse happens everywhere.

Earthlings paints a very narrow picture of society and how we interact with animals. If we did what earthlings would like us to do it would be to stop eating meat, stop wearing anything that comes from an animal, no animal testing in science and no pets. Is this a society you would want to live in?

  4. Voted other

Mainly because I see benefits for both and I personally don't believe the government should be telling me what is best for the dog I know so well. The Doco Earthlings from what I saw holds the peta line of mandatory spay and neuter and also from what I saw it was using footage taken from USA shelters which doesn't really apply here.

    Just my two cents

  5. Voted Not Sure

Because I honestly don't know too much about the whole situation regarding BSL and I am currently looking into researching it a bit more for understanding. I would like to think though that one day anyone could own any dog breed they liked.

  6. At the risk of being flamed..

I just finished watching Earthlings and yes I was appalled by the behaviour displayed by those people in the film how they were treating animals. However the whole film just felt like another campaign method for PETA. The doco was supposedly to be about societies treatment of animals yet all I saw was how appalling we can be towards animals and nothing about how animals are loved and respected and are a important part of our society.

  7. Hmm

After reading some of the things here I quite possibly could be considered a time waster, due to contacting people about breeds as I research and really scrutinize whether my life can accommodate the dog. This is because by the time I have considered things it is usually months down the track and I feel silly about going back and contacting the breeder again.

  8. I have met gronks who tell me. I want a red nose pittie. It has to be red with a red coat and red nose, because everyone knows when a pitbull has a red nose and red coat it's MUCH tougher than the other pits in different colours. *sarcastic tone*

It's that type of comment I find myself wondering about, the amount of people that I have heard in the vet clinic I volunteer at that say they want a blue staffy is incredible.

  9. I've never owned a purebred dog or showed so I can't comment in that aspect and I'm sure it's vital and important to the pure breed dogs (regarding showing) however I could be wrong.

In terms of general pet ownership I don't care what colour my dog is any more than I care what colour eyes they have. I tend to judge a dog (for my own pet ownership) on size, breed and sex. I had to think about that when bringing Razor and Boss home. Are they too big for the yard? Are they too active? Will another male live with another male happily etc?

What colour pup you have Lhok?

I have a black lab kelpie cross ^_^ but yeah I don't really have a preference having said that my two foster failure cats are black as well so maybe the colour chose me :)

  10. Reading the Blue wei thread and after hearing people looking for a particular colour for their dog I am curious as to why coat colour is important for choosing a particular breed of dog.

So I'm asking did you consider coat colour when you got your dog and how overly important is it?

  11. I last saw a pile of human poo in the multi storey car park at Heathrow Airport. I actually didn't see it before I stepped in it, forgot that in England, you have to look down all the time to make sure you don't step in anything.

We were walking back to my mum's car, dragging suitcase and chatting when squelch. I also turned into a foul mouthed wench to my mum's horror. She said "don't worry, we'll clean your shoes". No, we weren't going to do that, they went in a nearby bin and I went barefoot.

A colleague was telling me the other day that their Vizsla had rolled in human poo. Apparently in their area it is very common, it is left by fishermen in the park, next to bins, on the wharf, sometimes there's paper with it. I was really horrified, where are the rangers?? CCTV?? Should be huge fines ...

Imagine the horror if you weren't wearing shoes

    People can be so disgusting

  12. I am wondering now about Dire wolves

Maybe our dogs are a divergent from that line considering they were cousins or something I was half asleep when I was trying to watch a doco about them

    edit to make sense

  13. Thanks for the reply

I don't know how BSL is helping because to be honest it doesn't sound like it is. I asked the question as I don't know a lot about BSL and one concern of mine was what would happen after BSL is gone if one of the dogs the government is trying to prevent people owning certain breeds what the potential backlash could be if they were involved in an attack.

  14. One question

If BSL is ended in Australia, and some how someone (who won't treat the animal right and did make the dog aggressive towards humans and other animals) got their hands on one and the dog attacked someone or heaven help it killed someone. Isn't that only going to prove the government right? and the second time round cause them to be even more aggressive in their approach? I mean I can't help but think they will be watching and waiting for the first little thing to go wrong to bring in even tougher laws.

    --Lhok

A rottweiler killed someone, a mastiffx killed someone. Gov hasn't banned them. I don't believe that the APBT is more likely to kill someone that the dogs which have already killed people. Don't forget, a purebred APBT has never been responsible for a fatal attack on a person in Aust.

Why should that change if the bans were lifted. They didn't kill anyone pre-bans.

APBT are the same as other dogs. Not worse, not better. they are not generally HA.

Hmm maybe I should have been a tad bit clearer..

All I was meaning to ask about is if BSL is ended, just say hypothetically a dog attacked and was labeled as a dog from the previous dangerous dog act list for whatever reason.

I was wondering about the governments reaction to such a thing, assuming the worst it will make them feel that BSL was justified and could make it worst for everyone.

Do you see this as a potential problem?

I am no supporter of BSL even though some of my questions and comments may be taken that way, I'm just not very good at putting my thoughts and ideas across, so my apologies about this.
