  1.

She sounds like my Charlie. He doesn't make an appearance till after 10am, and if we make him get out of bed before 10am, he will give you a dirty look and walk to his day bed and go back to sleep. If you try to wake him up there, he will turn his back at you and give a huge sigh as though you're annoying him and to go away.

I understand how difficult it is to try to wake up a dog who doesn't want to wake up.. :o

You are lucky. My dogs wake up at 5 am and are ready for their walk! Even on weekends!!!

  2. Sorry, but I have very little patience with people who are so 'gushy' over their dogs that they 'humanise' them to the point where the poor bloody dogs end up with no idea where they come in the 'pack' order, and situations like this (as we are discussing) occur.

There is a logical flaw in your reasoning. Those who 'gush' over their dogs (and I proudly say that I do) don't necessarily humanise them. It is possible to really love dogs as dogs!!! And they can be a person's best mate 'as a dog'.

  3. There is a reason for the adage 'Let sleeping dogs lie'.

Unfortunately,, if I let my sleeping beauty lie, she wakes me up at 2am to tell me she's wee'd and poo'd in the house - so last night wee's are a necessity.

So true. If I don't wake up my sleeping dogs they won't do anything inside but will continue to scratch and bark at the door in the middle of the night till I let them out!!

  4. While looking for boarding options for my dogs, I was wondering if we could have a pinned topic on DOLer recommendations on dog boarding. I found some really good recommendations (unfortunately they were booked out) through posts that were often a year old.

  5. Hi,

I visited Hanrob where I have booked my dogs between 21 Dec-3 Jan. But I'm not very happy with their luxury suites. So I am looking at other options, one of which is a pet sitter who could stay at my place during this time.

I'm in Sydney's upper north shore and have two dogs who need to stay inside. Does anyone have any recommendations and rates? PM me for more details about my dogs.

    Thanks.

  6. This is true, but what if it was something else that had startled the dog? It wouldn't even have made the news then. Say it was a windy day and there was a tarp that suddenly moved, the dog startled and jumped into the road. My dogs have almost done this on several occasions. What if it had been a golden that suddenly jumped out from behind a corner and startled the dog? Other than the pit bull type dogs involved, it's not even worth reporting.

Of course it is worth reporting. This wasn't a chance occurance. These dogs didn't 'startle' the victims. These dogs were intent on attacking.

If a leashed dog gets startled, the owner can still control it.

But these four dogs were attacking and are directly responsible for the death of the dog.

If it was a pack of 4 goldens that attacked this aggressively, I'm sure that would be reported as well.

  7. Unsure of where 'mini foxy' was suggested?? Not a breed as far as I'm aware so hope your 'breeder' is supportive....

Although it is cute, have fun with her!

I just am unsure why people bother asking for suggestions of they don't take anything on board...maybe I'm just tired and grumpy, but jmo...

The kid asked for a puppy, and the kids friend had one so that's what they got. The kid's happy, so really that's all that matters!

Agree Minimax. Just because people ask for suggestions doesn't mean they can't decide for themselves. These forums are a sounding board for ideas.

Thowra, your puppy is very cute. I'm glad your son is happy.

  8. Thanks Clyde. I checked Kelston but there wasn't much information available online and I had to make the booking asap. May be next time.

I have now booked my dogs into the Hanrob Boarding Kennel at Heathcote, in one of their luxury suites. There was only one available so I decided to put in a deposit and book it since I and my OH have to travel overseas in Dec. I am going there this weekend to have a look and if I don't like it I have the option of cancelling it.

Has anyone else used it? Any feedback?

  9. I am trying to book my dogs into a kennel from 21 Dec to 3 Jan. Terrigal pet resort is booked out. I called Acacia. they don't have any place either.

Can anyone suggest anything else in the Sydney area?

    I am specifically looking for:

    • Airconditioning
    • No sharing with other dogs
    • No play time with other dogs, but instead walks and play time with the two of them together

  10. There is only one kennel in the Duffys Forest area that I could recommend and that is Woodcroft.

I went to their website and it sounds like they let a number of dogs out together. Can you specify if you don't want your dogs to interact with other dogs? I'll never feel comfortable letting someone else decide which dogs my dogs could play with.

  11. Hey Stonecutter ,was your little one in there 2weeks ago? There was a little pom when i went to get my 3, you may have seen them all.

Pax recommended me too when they were too busy. :)

They have inside kennels, heated, and then they can go out into small outside grassy runs in the day, or stay inside, most of the little ones i saw were snuggled up inside.

I ask for mine to be left in the big paddock allday as they are used to being outside in the sun.

Very accomadating to your needs, will give meds too,( taken mine to vet twice too) and great choice of food.

How big are the kennels? They look quite small in the photos on their website. Has anyone boarded medium/large dogs there? I use Terrigal pet resort since their suites have rooms the size of a medium sized bedroom (including an actual bed) with their own grassy yard.

  12. The other side of the coin is that the management capabilities of the average pet owner have declined. Yards have gotten smaller. The number of homes with an adult at home during the day has gone down. Walking the dog has ceased to be a normal kids chore.

I agree with you. I think part of the problem is also how dogs are socialised. We have so many restrictions on dogs these days that there isn't enough opportunity to give them a lot of exposure. Assuming that there is no serious genetic predisposition to aggression, a puppy that has grown up with lots of kids, animals will be less likely to react than a dog who has never been with a kid before.

Also, while I do agree that all dogs can bite, few dogs will show the kind of aggression that led to this girl's death. Most dogs will react if pushed, scared or startled. But that, at the most, would result in a quick nip, not a full on attack.

  13. Just to make sure... His stomach isn't "bruised" looking is it??

If the skin is just red, yep could be allergic reaction. Just wanting to make sure he isn't bleeding under the skin which could be an emergency :) hope his skin is just red n Im being paranoid! :)

No it's not bruised. I checked him thoroughly. It's not sore or itchy either. It's just red but it's lessening now.

For the last three days he barely managed to get up and was wheezing through the night on Friday due to the swelling in his throat. He wouldn't even get up to eat. I hand fed some sardines mixed with his medicines but he didn't want to finish that either.

But this morning he was excited about his breakfast and went out by himself. So we left home for an hour to buy some stuff.

When we got back my OH opened he door and went in while I was getting things from the car. He suddenly said "come quickly"! So I went in and there was white fluff everywhere!!!! My dog was feeling better and had his energy back so had decided to trash his bed.

I must say I've never been so happy to see a trashed bed!!!! We were so happy to see him playing.

  14. Our girl had this as part of an allergic reaction - but if he has already had one bad allergic reaction with significant swelling this week, I would be going straight to the vet anyway; or if you can't get an appointment I would go to an emergency vet if there is one near you.

Thanks coogie. The vet just called back (and I must add that the vets at the Ku Ring Gai Vets are amazing) and said that it is an extension of the allergic reaction and will go down in a day or so.

  15. My elkhound's whole face swelled up Thursday early morning. He was rushed to the vet. They did a full check up including blood and urine samples, ultrasound to see if there is any blockage but all seemed ok. So the vet gave him a cortisone injection and tablets which has now brought the swelling down significantly. They think that he has had a severe allergic reaction to something. So we are getting the whole backyard cleaned.

However, this morning we noticed that his whole stomach has turned a deep red colour. We are trying to get an appointment with the vet. But I was wondering if you have seen anything like this before and have any advice on what could be causing it?

  16. hi Tibbie_tabbie.

Thanks for your response - I do know the story about Lennox, and agree that it was completely terrible, inhumane and totally unnecessary. I was so sad when I read about it earlier in the month. And to think it was probably carried out to make an example - or maybe just because of pure ignorance.

I'm sorry that this is a little off-topic, but there was a dog called Lennox who helped his disabled owners daughter - he was her therapy dog and her playmate (her disability meant it was difficult for her to play with other children).

Due to him supposedly having 'pit bull features' (he was not a pit), he was kept in a appalling conditions for two years - no visits by the family allowed. He was put to sleep recently when the final appeal finished.

Many high profile dog behaviourists spoke out on his behalf (Victoria Stillwell was a committed supporter), and even offered to fly him to the US to live out the rest of his days.

The Facebook group has links to a lot of the websites: http://www.facebook.com/TheLennoxCampaign

I wanted to make this post as I wish to highlight the fact that even dogs that save and enrich lives can be subject to this treatment.

    Hi Kfittall,

While I don't have any story I can share, I strongly feel that Lennox's story needs to be told. Our dogs enrich our lives in so many ways. It is time government and laws stop treating this bond lightly and heartlessly. If making a point took priority over a disabled child's happiness then it is very clear that they don't understand how important pets are.

  17. Yep, mine has eaten a whole bag of lentils, a bag of bird seed and a whole garic bread which was won bench surfing, with no issues whatsoever *rolly eyes*

My goldy has eaten a whole bag of lentils as well, half a bag of flour, a quarter bag of dog food, and half a packet of icing sugar. Then did a few zoomies!!! Of course when we got home and realised she had figured out how to open the kitchen cupboard, we fixed it and got her to calm down. She just went to sleep. No issues, except a minor stomach upset.

That said, I still take all the precautions to prevent bloat.

Edited to add she did not eat all of that in one day!!

  18. Why? Because they can.

Clearly they enjoy it. And frankly I'd rather them eat that than cat poo!! eeeuuuu

True. However my dog is extra clean. He tiptoes around dog poo and would not pick up his ball if it rolls into the part of the backyard where my dogs do their poos. Once he peed on his favourite ball by mistake. And didn't touch it till I washed it with soap!!

He would never ever roll in dog poo. Which is why I was very surprised by his interest in cow/horse poo!!!
