Given the breed I don't think he'll learn from his experience

A distraught pet owner has been reunited with her beloved dog after he was found trapped in a rabbit hole five days after disappearing.

33-year-old Sarah Mclellan was left devastated after her beloved dog Ralph disappeared while out on a walk near their English home in Haworth, West Yorkshire last week.

Mclellan and her husband then spent their weekend searching for the wire-haired Dachshund. They recruited volunteers; made posts for “Lost Dog” Facebook groups; and even had a woman create a website for Ralph – all to no avail.

“On Friday it was horrendous weather, it was freezing and we just couldn’t find him anywhere,” said Mclellan. “As you can imagine at this point your mind goes wild thinking, ‘what’s happened? Has he drowned? Has something bad happened?’

“My son had asking us where Ralphy was. He was opening the front door and shouting for him – it was heartbreaking,” she added. “We just had to tell him that Daddy was looking for him.”

Miraculously, the terrified pooch was eventually sniffed out by his sister Edie while she was out on a walk with Mclellan’s husband on Monday.

Ralph was trapped five feet underground in a maze of rabbit runs located just half a mile from his home. After two hours of careful digging, the pup was finally rescued.

“The rabbit holes are like mazes and he must have gone through one hole and got stuck – he had made himself a hole in the middle but he couldn’t get out again,” said Mclellan. “When he got out the hole he went for a wee – and then carried on as if nothing had happened!

“When I got back home I opened the door and there he was in the kitchen,” she added. “I couldn’t believe it.”

Despite losing weight while he was trapped in the hole, Ralph was not left with any serious injuries.

“Ralph is completely knackered and he has worn down his nails from where he was trying to dig himself out, but he is otherwise fine,” said Mclellan. “He’s lost weight and he’s so tired – he just needs time to build himself back up again.”

The relieved owner hopes that her happy ending will give others hope that their pets will also be found.

“It was such a drama and I was still in shock when I saw him – I was up till 1am last night just cuddling him.

“He does like chasing rabbits and he does that a lot but he just took it too far this time. Hopefully he has learnt his lesson this time.”

Even heavy duty drugs wouldn't be enough to help a person cope with that scenario! She is actually a bit better now but I do have a funny story for you. Recently she and her son decided to do a flight over the Antartic. I think it was like 9 hours. We tried to talk her out of it, for the sake of all the other poor people on the plane. Of course it went tits up before they even made it to the airport so she didn't have one good thing to say about the entire experience. I wonder how many other passengers demanded their money back for that 'special' in-flight experience?

O No!  I was just reading about those flights to Antarctica yesterday LG (but thought I'd rather go by boat anyway) just imagine if I had gone and she had been onboard :scared:

    Yes, that is for sure.

I just have a background of sorrow all the time, which I know is bad for the dogs, but I am trying to keep overcome it.

In some respects, though, I am very lucky.  Last year I received a refund from my super account following the financial royal commission, of fees paid.  It wasn’t much but huge for me because my house needs some urgent repairs.  Despite numerous visits from tradespeople, I haven’t managed to get them done except for new fences.

So, I will have another talk with the specialist this week and get things underway.

This is   :offtopic: LMO but it may be worth tradies contacting you via this page linkie here (I was contacted by a very reasonable and very professional solar inverter guy and was very happy with the job and he really did have to go out of his way to get to our place)

Hi there My beautiful cocker passed at 15 2 months ago and Im longing to have another cocker to share my life with . The only breeders offering older dogs are interstate Im in Melbourne

    Happy to spend

Contact breeders nearest to you and ask if they would have or know of an older dog for sale, tell them all about your family, if you are home most of the time, and if not, what time you will be spending with the dog and where it will be sleeping, also send them photos of your house yard. Breeders want the best home for their older ones so you'll need to work hard to prove you are the best home available

  6. Westie Rescue have had good results with Austrazole Topical Fungicide Wash for Dogs and Horses

I have used it on Minnie as a wash (obviously) after I have given her a bath (and yes, I just use Fido's shampoo) Minnie's skin has cleared up well though the dog's immune system also needs a kick-start so a raw diet (seems to be the go-to for skin-problem Westies) Apoquel for the short term (thank goodness fo Apoquel), Hydrozole ointment for a few days on the bad areas as well as Gold Cross Whitfield's Antifungal Ointment (Chemist Warehouse or ebay)

The Hydrozole is a pharmacy only product so you'd need to say it's for your husband's feet, don't mention it's for your dog

The Whitfields is really so good, cheap enough and covers a big area as it's greasy.

Calendula petal wash was is helpful but is really slow on results, I made up a wash by steeping some petals overnight, I also made a Calendula oil by putting petals in coconut oil and keeping it warm for a couple of days, I used an electric yoghurt maker. You can buy the petals here https://countrypark.com.au/product/calendula-petals/

    Hope this helps

  7. All of us here have gone through the same grief @West so we do know how you are feeling.

have your dog cremated or buried under her favourite garden-spot and give her some dignity.

Remember it is still about her and doing what you are thinking of doing is not going to help your grief.

    Would she have wanted it?

As some of you know my son has a French bulldog, Rocko. Well, yesterday he was unwell. My son bathed him the night before and when they woke in the morning his skin was very red. He seemed ok but as the day warmed up Rocko became less his usual self. Warm to touch and his skin was quite yuck to touch as well. We are assuming he has had a bad reaction to the shampoo as nothing else had changed or happened. I told him to bathe him in cool water, which he did.  ( and go to the vet if he looked worse) He dabbed some malaseb on the worse spots before washing it off also. Today he is much brighter and his skin, although a bit pinkish still is looking better than yesterday.
He used Dermcare Aloveen oatmeal shampoo and when I spoke to him this morning he said he’d been thinking back and yes during the bath Rocko had whined a little  and made a few kicking movements like something had irritated him. We thought this shampoo was a “decent” one . We know every dog is different though. Has anyone had any such reactions using shampoos? The other thing is there doesn’t appear to be any ingredients listed on the bottle so my son is wondering how he can know which shampoo to buy that Rocko won’t react to. He doesn’t want to use malaseb all the time. I’ll be interested in all comments. Thanks in advance.

  9. Whereabouts in Qld are you? the reason I ask is that there may be midges (tiny sand-flies) around, their bite is a bit savage to skin and really itchy.

Sometimes there are dragonflies flying about which is an indication of sandfly/midge presence, the dragonflies eat them

Usually the tick preventive medication helps

    or

it also may be caused by Wandering Jew, here is a link to the ornamental variety though Qld does have a native one which is green so scroll down a little on this link
