  1. Actually as long as those who are on the advisory council are a good representative of the stakeholders and its not stacked

I would support such a move regardless of who had to pay for it.

On the whole I think this report was better than it might have been.

I am with Steve on this one as long as the committee/advisory council are not stacked and there is reliable data and science involved this could be a good thing. As said in the report the puppy farmers are being targetted and the need for microchipping prior to sale is not a national requirement in Australia either.

An unbiased public eduction would be good but what a challenge to get that happening either at a state or national level - eeek not sure where you would start there. Far too many issues for my small brain today.

I feel many breeders underestimate and dismiss the knowledge of the buyer. Whilst the average punter may be shallow in understanding I havent had a buyer yet who hasnt asked about hips/elbows/temperament or inherited disease. Its annoying sometimes but a very consistant series of questions. How openly I answer the quetions pretty much determines whether I get the sale or not.

  2. What have we done for our dogs

1 Bought the house on 1/2 acre

Then built the kennels and garage :)

Bought the block next door because the 1/2 acre was full of kennels and garage

Bought a crap dogtrailer just so the dogs could eat in it - the dining car so to speak

Then bought a better trailer to take the dogs away in.

Only go on holidays if the 'kids' can come with us

Put air conditioning in the lounge for the pups

Isulated the verandah - for the pups

It all sounds normal stuff to me!!! :)

  3. What I wish I knew when I first had a dog

    • Dogs thrive on routine
They know when dinner should be and dance about if its 5 minutes late.
They know when I pick up the keys for work and they dont follow me to the car - when I pick up the keys on Saturday morning - god help me if they cant come in the car for a drive!!
That pups go through different stages of confidence and timidness and the routine established as a youngster helps them get through it.
That dogs also learn well from the other dogs - they copy the good and bad habits if not given direction
That the dogs are a part of my life but are not here to meet all my emotional needs
They dogs deserve to be accepted as they are too and they can just chill out and be dogs without having to 'perform' in the ring, at obedience, agility, stockwork or whatever I like to do with them to be loved.
To cherish the young and the old - they all have character and love to give so freely.
Dogs have filled my life with love and joy and occassionally tears for the last 20+ years ... and I wouldnt change a thing!

The new kids on the block - 12 - 1 week old baby Labradors!

  4. Well good news this morning - he has jumped weight from 300g to 320g - pretty good eh :( - I'll keep supplimenting for a couple of days and see how he continues - hopefully he will only need it ocassionally if he keep putting on weight.

He is bright and allert as they all are and Tua is eating well and contented.

  5. OK thanks for that guys - yes I have started the biolac. If he was weak or unwell in anyway I would probably be more pushy about feeds I am happy he has had colostrum and when he feeds his belly is full. I gave him about 10ml this afternoon and I will get Pete to do one more toninght and I'll feed him again when I get home around 11pm. So thats 3 feeds today.

Again he is not showing any sign of weakness , poos and piddle all normal - just have to wait I guess. :)

  6. OK we have 12 healthy lab pups, mum is doing well, eating and drinking like a horse. Pups born 2/1/10 I have 1 runt everyone has been pupping on weight except this guy he has lost 50g he is now 300g where everyone else is up ot 480 -520g.

The little fella isnt sick or particularly weak, he feeds well and I put him back on mum when the others are asleep. They are only 3 days old and milk as different from colostrum is kicking in - do I leave things for another day or two and just keep putting him on the teet or suppliment with Bialac. Maybe 15 - 20 mls 2 or 3 times a day before he feeds then let him back on the teet? Any advice would be appreciated.

  7. :o only 12 Pauline, she'll need to try harder next time

That's a nice big number and a good start to the new year

Sway has puppy ID collars available from her online whelping supplies shop

Funny bunny :) madam only had 3 in her first litter - wrong timing from me - but I think she got it right this time.

Has Sway got a website I can look at?

Found it - ordering id colars now!

  8. Here are mum and the kids any suggestions for identifying the little critters?? All we can think of is braiding pink wool with individual colour and blue wool with individual colours to id the boy from girls and individuals - any better ideas?

A couple of small ones but all are putting on weight, all feeding well and strong - mum eating drink and doing everything right. :o

  9. We have one very round and uncomfortable looking Lab girl about to explode with pups. I have to work all the way through Xmas and New Year so my husband is the 'maternity nurse' & he will call me at work if she starts to whelp. Its Pete's first litter unassisted :o d ... as such and he is excited - I am a bit nervous but I am sure he will be fine and Tua is a born mum. Talk about 'dad' being a tad neurotic about the pups though

  10. I have removed a number of the more 'political' posts that do not contribute to educating people about the Labrador Retriever.

May I suggest that people keep those for the thread in the General forum.

    PF

Such a shame, it was the first time I had found something interesting enough to write about on DOL in many many months maybe a year!!!!

IMO you shouldn't have removed them at least people were writing, maybe it wasn't the correct place but I don't agree with you removing everything and it was just flow on from other threads.

But your choice, just a shame that you have lost so many people who use to regularly contribute.

I wonder why a Poodlefan who says she isnt a 'Lab person' feels she has a right to edit the Lab breed site - I find this mildly annoying - I would have thought it was the perogative of the DOL team and Troy alone to do that. Its a pity - I will probably not use this section again.

I'm the moderater of all threads in this section and have the capacity to edit or delete posts because Troy enabled me to do it . The posts were reported to me as a potential breach of forum rules and I removed them because:

    1. They breached Forum Rule 7:

No denigration of dog shows or exhibitors (and no show ring 'politics')

Our site actively promotes the exhibition of pure bred dogs. We prefer to concentrate on the 'positives' of this activity. If you have a gripe about what happened at a particular show or the conduct of an exhibitor, please take your soapbox elsewhere.

    2. They also did not serve to educate people about the breed (which is the purpose of this section of the forum).

If you are unhappy with my moderation I recommend you PM Troy. You could start a thread about the relative merits of those Labrador Retrievers who title and those that do or do not attend specialties in the show forum or post about these issues in the breed sub-forum in General. Troy and his full time mods do all the moderating there.

Experienced breeders like you have a lot to offer those who wish to educate themselves about this breed Labs. I hope you will continue of offer your experience n here to those with questions about your breed of choice. There are more appropriate places on DOL for discussion of other breed issues within forum rules.

With respect Poodlefan - given you have permission from Troy to be a moderator that is fine however may I suggest you identify yourself as a forum moderator - because as a relatively new user of the forum, from my perspective it seem odd to have a person from another breed dictating what can and cannot be said, I see it as crossing a boundary.

Since however you have a specific role I would think it would be curteous to others to identify yourself as a moderator.

Other forums I have been on identify themselves as moderators in their profile as forum moderator and there is no problem.

  12. Top to bottom -1 Katya's dad Harry, 2 Katya, 3 Katya's grand mum Tilly, 4 Katya's mum Lucy. - Your megs looks like her mum I think. Anything with Mimbil behind it was my prefix.

  13. Smoke blue pups I bred - and a black just to clarify the colour difference. I'll get Kelpiesrule to post the son of one of these boys - he is a fawn -although I have his pics somewhere I dont feel right to post them without her permission. Lee-Annes boy is called Devin and he has a smoke blue brother - very handsome. Look them up on DOL under Kelpie profile prefix Myriahill - one is an adult blue the other an adult fawn.

  15. Our girl developed "KC" after going to the coast. Our vet suggested 10 -14 days incubation also. Even though she was vaccinated for KC she still developed a cough but no temperature, ate everything ( mind you we are talking about a Labrador) and never appeared ill as such - just coughed like a demented seal! - so maybe it wasnt KC - who knows. But the honey did the trick and non of our other dogs developed anything - its been 5 weeks now and no cough in anyone. I wonder if it is just a bug going round.
