  1. I am doing everything to prolong my GSD's life believing that I am in control. I keep reading stories about dogs who lived until ripe old age of 27 and keep hoping that mine will be such a freak of nature. I noticed, however, with sadness that my boy is becoming greyer around his muzzle. When suddenly woken from his sleep he barks as if startled (disoriented?). I try not to think that he may be getting old (after all he is ONLY 8) but on the other hand don't want to neglect his needs if they changed. I would be grateful for your thoughts on this matter.
  2. It's not so much that dogs are eaten but that they are tortured before dying. They suffer a horrific death and pain inflicting is deliberate. The belief of their oppressors is that the more they suffer the tastier their meat would be. and it is a well-known fact; therefore I am appauled that the topic was discussed in such a lighthearted manner by the 2 presenters.
  3. One of the presented said that while he was travelling in China, he was advised by his driver that road signs (K2) inform of restaurants where one can get young dogs. This presenter found it amusing. Then both of them laughingly discussed the topic and that they wouldn's mind eating a dog, as long as it was presented as a stew. Then they went on to talk about some dog meals where you can clearly see that a meal is half a dog, with his head etc. I am disgusted with these guys and from now on won't be listening to their blabbering.
  4. Well, my sister rang me at work and advised that people from Melbourne University keep urging dog owners to vaccinate their dogs. Apparently vets are saying that many more cases are discovered every week. Dogs can get it not just from other dogs but from the soil. The warning is especially applicable to older dogs. Well mine is 7.5 but I am scared to have him undergo his usual shots. He was so sick last year and his muzzle became grey overnight. I am scared, don't know what to do... yet I could never forgive myslef if he became sick with this virus. Please help with you advice forum members. You always do.
  5. In the roof and walls and has a bushy tail. I looked at the government website, but it looks like they would insist on building a house for possums so they would be permanently living near me :-(
  6. Dear Forum Members I did some research by googling and I know there are, but would be grateful if someone could recommend a good and honest one. Someone who services eastern suburbs. Apparently such a contractor would have to come to our house several times when it's dark; probably walk around. It scares me to have a stranger hanging around our place . I know I am being silly but can't help they way I feel. Ideally I would prefer a woman to do this job but it seems more like a man's job. Does anyone know what exactly is involved? Would he need to come inside the house? I am desperate for your help please.
  7. I hope this product does not have harmful chemicals as after no vac carpet deodoriser i get headache
  8. Thank you Alyoshka The noise is made by possums as they sound like elephants, also hiss and make a can like noise I also see them through the window walking on tree branches. I will certainly try naphtalene and may be the product from Bunnings
  9. I reckon men who love animals and can be that gentle with them are sooooo sexy
  10. When my dogs are puppies I get so much attention from men. "They get that gentle smile on their faces when looking at my puppies
  11. My neighbours are protected from the noise as the dog is inside ( he lives in the house). but I am the one who is on the receiving end. They make noise in the roof and inside walls.
  12. Dear All I am desperate for help. When it gets dark possums come out and my dog does not stop barking. I am sleep deprived and can't function normally I googled like mad to find a solution and read about getting python toys, spraying the roof with urine , etc. I also contacted our Council. I was advised to arrange for a contractor to come, trap them and seal any entry poins in walls and in the roof. Unfortunately I cannot afford $800 at the moment. I definitely don't want to kill them (and there are people who do apparently) but to discourage them from hanging around. I would be forever grateful for any advice that would restore my normal life.
  13. But why on earth did daddy have his ears clipped???
  14. Steve I read the article and it is scarry. So many dogs have been desexed by their owners who wanted only the best for them. There will be a lot of owners feeling guilty (I desexed one of my dogs) Perhaps sometimes it is unavoidable when for example a testicle has not descended. It shows that one should not blindly follow any trends and question your vet's decision. Everything should be researched thoroughly. I for one will never desex my dogs.
  15. I read that desexing should be done as late as possible, not earlier than 18 months The reason being that bones have to form. Hormones, ex testosterone is needed for bone growth
  16. Currently i'd probably say my pup's favourite is his can of 7pup Nadz, but how does he play with a can? Why would it be enjoyable? My dog adores soft toys but not too big so he can carry them around comfortably
  17. I opened this topic few months ago, so far the best advice I got was to get chickens. I researched this topic on the internet and everybody raves about chickens fighting wandering jew. I haven't bought chicks yet as can't find a breeder in Melbourne (breeders are far in the country) but apparently this is the only method that works.Wandering Jew is harmful to dogs and stop plants from growing. Chicken not only lay eggs but also fertilise the ground. So far I raked all wandering jew and put on a compost hip - apparently it is excellent for compost. (I am planning to buy chickens but some people scare me that chickens get worms an diseases).
  18. Signed! Can I also sing for my pelderly neighbour who does not know how to use a computer?
  19. Ok, teachers have enough on their plate, but surely teaching about behaviour around dogs is not a big involved subject like Mathemtatics, English etc Maybe children should be taught in kindergartens, by parents etc. I know that the most important thing is to have a dog under control but it would not hurt to educate children, although it may seem children don't take it in
  20. This is what I found - from an expert on dogs; "What your children should know Just as finding the 'right' dog is important, it's also vital that you teach your children how to treat your pet and how to behave around it. Here are some practical tips that can help and are useful whether or not you have a dog at home: Teach children to be gentle and respectful around dogs. Show them how to stroke a dog gently on the head or chest. Explain that they mustn't pull the dog's tail or ears, poke it in the eye, tease it or be rough with it or hug it - generally speaking dogs find hugging threatening. Don't let your children be too loud around your dog, such as running around, screaming and shouting, this can startle dogs and they can react instinctively. Tell them not to stare a dog in the eye as this can be threatening. If your dog is sleeping or eating, your children should leave it alone.
  21. Exactly! dog owners have responsibilities and so do parents!!!
  22. If I had a dog that I didn't trust around children then I would keep then on a very short lead and I would also avoid places where there are a lot of children. Well, it has nothing to do with not trusting my dog around children. I don't go to playgrounds. Children are everywhere - how can I avoid them? I from my side keep my dog on a short leash, but I don't have eyes at the back of my head.
