Pretty much what diva said, there are plenty of supplement options and people will differ in their favourites. It is worth considering the injection route but if he's not too bad you can always keep that up your sleeve for in case he gets worse.

 

Personally I use the paw osteosupport green lip mussel powder capsules which you empty onto their dinner. I also feed a dry food with a decent amount of gluclosamine etc (along with some raw). 

If I was 'firm' with my mini I think he'd crumble. He's an excellent dog but very soft, eager to please and not at all stubborn.

 

Perhaps what people call stubbornness is just that the dog is smart and doesn't do well in long periods of training? I've always found short bursts of no more than 10 minutes best with keeping my mini's attention.

Isn't that funny schnauzer max - I have a mini schnauzer and spent a few months handling a standard and the standard was much sharper. It may have been the individual, though I've found my mini is quite a soft dog.

Interesting PK - max eats either the black hawk or the meals for mutts (as well as barf) and is never gassy. I might give the dried stuff a go next time I'm feeling flush with cash. Man's reaction sounds so so gross though PK! Nothing more gross than dog fart that smells as though it's been fermenting inside them for months!

Interesting. Max isn't a farty dog at all, but not sure after that review it is worth the risk!

It'll only be marked down if it is close to its best before date - there's enough people that would feed it at full price that there's no 'need' to discount it.

 

Max loves the venison and fish - we've often used it for training treats. Hopefully he likes the new flavour as much as it's hard to get him to work for food.

 

Has anyone used the K9 Naturals from petbarn? It seems quite similar/a dupe of ziwipeak but I haven't tried it...

Honestly my previous big cross-breed looked like he'd do the job but would've just licked the person. He was tall, broad, big chested and had upright ears so looked the part.

 

My little, adorable, mini schnauzer has done this, unasked and tbh unwanted, twice. I did want a dog that would alert bark but I don't require a dog to stand between me and an unknown male. Max did it once with a German guy (well he was speaking German) on the street who purposely stood in our way and once with a former friend who was getting too friendly when I was trying to push him off at home. Both times Max got between us and barked but didn't do anything else. You wouldn't expect that behaviour if you met him as he is a bit of a mummy's boy.

 

So I'm not sure just getting a puppy of a breed will work, I think she would need to select an adult that fits the bill.

 

Any big black dog would give a visual deterrent though, and most people on the street assume rotties or mastiffs are as likely to be aggressive as not so tend to avoid them.

It's generally recommended to worm puppies every two weeks until they're about 16 weeks - they explore everything with their mouths and at that age any worm burden can knock them around.

Yeah, whilst I'm sure your dogs are lovely they don't seem to be what the op was after in that they have very sloped backs (compared with the straight back style the op specified)

I've used both and both have agreed with my dog. 

 

I believe they were developed by the same two guys who then had irreconcilable differences - essentially I think the mixes are pretty well the same, though the Dr b's barf seems wetter than the big dog barf.

 

I use them in conjunction with an excellent grain free kibble, meals for mutts. They're available in most pet supply stores here in Aus in the freezer section and seem to sell well

I've always found that drontal is best given around meals as it seems to be really hard on the tummy. Could it be that the drontal on an empty tummy made him feel a bit nauseated and then after dinner he actually had something to bring up?

 

I'd just stick to your regular worming schedule as the chances are he got most of the medication in his system given the timing. I'd also just assume the vomit was gross meat that the rummy had been working on for a while. 

 

But I'm no vet! 

My max (mini schnauzer, 10 years old, so not super senior but no spring chicken) walks between 5-9kms every day in the morning. He also gets a short potter in the evening.

Every dog is different, but in the heat he does less as he is wearing a fur coat!

I'd head off to the vet as it was a quick change of behaviour. Full blood panel, urinalysis etc.

I'd also probably worm her as it is summer and even a small worm burden can suck the energy out of an oldie.

No one is advocating for puppy farms here westiemum - we all back you in your disgust. Here in Vic all the worst ones are well known and totally legal because they pay their domestic animal business licence to compliant councils (which is why the proposed legislation simply wouldn't help). The system needs to change, everyone agrees on that (except the owners of said operations).

The reality is that there are nowadays plenty of people who breed oodles or fashionable cross breds who aren't puppy farms and who love their animals. They don't have issues with demand and that's what needs to be addressed or understood.

I think it comes down to the simple fact that they've met lots of those kinds of dogs.

They've met them, they thought it was cute and the ones they've met are healthy and easy dogs to live with (or at least they believe that).

I really don't think it's any more complicated than that these days.

There is the perception that purebreds aren't healthy, and when every 'staffy type' people meet and assume are purebred have allergies it confirms the thought in their head.

I just got a phone call from my local member - not his secretary just him. He thanked me for my detailed email and mentioned that he was already very concerned with the current legislation draft that the Vic government has proposed. He said that liberals are talking to stakeholder groups already and are gathering information about exactly how far reaching the current draft is and how to amend it/re write it/examine it so that it actually hits the intended targets.

They are listening. He knew the information already and was across it.

Email the liberals guys - they're the ones with the ability to stop this getting through the Legislative Council and my local member seemed to actually care.

Agreed jules. I've posted about it on fb, emailed friends and family the link TSD put up, signed it myself and emailed my local member about it.

Just because people aren't on here congratulating themselves for what they have tried to do it doesn't mean they don't care, are sitting back and spectating. If we are all in heated agreement the threads fizzle out somewhat but that doesn't mean people don't care.

The whole back section (away from the river) is generally quieter and more heavily planted. She may find walking the tan stressful as there are so many people, dogs and cars nearby. Maybe a sit for a photo in front of the governor's house? I've got a photo somewhere of max and I in front of the shrine and it's lovely :)

Willem - docking usually wasn't done under anaesthetic, with pain killers etc and desexing is. Does that give you at least one significant difference?

Also desexing is done for a myriad of reasons and docking, whilst traditionally done for a myriad of reasons, was assumed to be largely image motivated by the time it was banned.

And yes, my dog is desexed, I chose to desexed him at around 6 months (mini schnauzer). To the OP, do whatever works for you, if I had a larger breed I would probably wait until it's fully grown.

I feed the duck one to max (he was on the black hawk lamb) and it hasn't flared up his skin issues and it is that time of year.

He didn't like the roo one (only seems to like roo tendons and not much other roo) and gestational liked the grain free salmon and sardine but he's a schnauzer and I couldn't hack the fishy smell on his beard!

Kibble is often more like flakes rather than anything they have to crunch. They have a Hugh energy one for working type dogs that might be worth checking for protein levels?

I get it and the green tripe (more like flakes as well) from an independent pet supply store in Chelsea

A colleague in nz used to feed roadkill possums with no ill effects - he did freeze it for a while, 2 months I think, before feeding it. He never fed the innards or offal
