  1. Aaah, a person after my own heart......I WUV YOOO :p Isn't there a working kelpie register? I know my friend's working bred kelpie is on the ANKC sporting register but he is desexed. Yes there is a register for them , bloodlines and breeding are kept with from what i have seen more than the standard 5 generations seen in CC registered dogs , I think although I ramble a bit, my worry is that legislation often throws the baby out with the bath water so to speak , I am in NSW and our CC is not always perceptive enough to see when they encourage only Pure bred CC registered dogs to breed what also may be lost , I would be interested if you could register an entire working kelpie on the sporting register ? as I am unsure on this one ? if to compete within dog sports they all must be desexed ? I am sure you can see the issue breed and train a top sport and herding dog and not be able to pass these genes to a new generation after proving on a field of compition ? Is it hard to imagine that the ruling will come down that will mean the demise of the working Kelpie because he does not fit the Box of CC registration ? I don't feel that dogs should be crossed but I think that we need to be truly careful in what we wish for and its impact on the dog breeds we love is only a small step to losing our choices and we may well do it to ourselves " and now the catch cry will not be dangerous but unethical, unhealthy , inappropriate to modern life" I want to continue to keep dogs throughout my life , and the wonder of all the breeds I would one day like to share my home with , if we are not careful we may just lose them still we need to BAN THE DEED NOT THE BREED this includes the Mutts the people are the problem here
  2. I have been reading this thread with interest all 13 pages , I own both pure and cross bred dogs and have done all my life , my crosses are rescues and my pures from registered breeders , although my pures are true to type , with a temps within a predictable range the true advantage to me is that I can find a puppy that I like , both pure and cross I feel that all of my dogs are equal , all get the same training , vet care , attention and diet , they are dogs ! I would be sad to see the range of sizes shapes and abilities lost from australia as well as working hunting and herding lines that (particularly working Kelpies the bench animal now has little resemblance to a working stock dog in confirmation because of restriction of breeding on non CC registered dogs , these animals are far to important to loose . the loss also of breeds that may have a bad rep , I love my rotties and they would be sadly one of the breeds that we would be deprived of , too big , to scary , to expensive to feed , hard to handle when untrained and lacking in attention not a Suitable Pet Breed X breeds were always when I was young to create a working dog of particular type ( always the same type herding x herding ) or Opps my bitch was gotten to not for financial gain , can we look at outlawing greedy unethical dishonest people , not the dogs x breeds and pures will all be affected if we let it , if we dont stand firm on peoples right to breed healthy stable dogs . Would you like the designer dog of the future , minimal shed , small to mid size sharp nose dark coat and no working or prey drive does not bark or talk "perfect for you family " I defend the right of all breeders with forsight ,vision , ethics and a true love for their dogs and all dogs to breed , remember that working kelpies are NOT CC registered dogs , But this is a true breed and has kept type for many years
  3. Hi Cuchulain this is one of the better dry foods , admit that all my dogs eat raw , milk can upset tummies and some dogs are sensitive to it , the occasional missed meal is not going to hurt max , change in weather or activity levels can dictate how hungry the pup is , if you think he may like a little change youghart is a good additive and good for them , but I would avoid milk while he is still so young and kibble should be left dry where you can good luck with max
  4. HI Macaroni the easiest answer is to fence off the plants that dad wants to keep with chicken wire , that way pup can explore and not get into trouble positive training is the best with babies , and as with human babies the best thing to prevent damage to precious items and puppy tummies is to either create a barrier so that they cannot get to things or put them out of harms way. Puppies will chew , dig , cry and make mess, suggest that you try a kong toy with somthing tasty in it to distract him and try to redirect him to somthing interesting when he looks like he might be heading for the garden Good luck and enjoy your puppy
  5. Hi Tia has she been desexed, UTI is a fairly common infection of the uterus , if she is not desexed it sounds quite possible dogs do fret when stressed but this tends to put them off their food and make them mope , with most doesnt last too long . the wee everywhere sounds like somthing to visit your vet for good luck
  6. I am sorry Schmoo's boss, but I disagree with your comment advocating that we should be protecting our dogs, taking self defence classes which doesn't suit everyones requirements. Protection dogs do have a role in society and anyone is free to own one if they desire which is not a crime and in some cases owning such a dog for people who have suffered the trauma of home invasions and assaults, a protection dog helps them sleep at night providing the therapy required to help them feel safe again in their own homes. No amount of self defence classes will overcome being woken from sleep with knife held at someones throat where a protection dog can stop such offenders getting in, or at a minimum bark, wake and alert someone to an offender on the premises. HI Diablo I agree that working protection dogs do have a place , under the control of a competent handler and working police , security and armed forces , but for family homes i do have to question , not the dogs ability to follow his training but the owners ability to handle him nervous owners tend to make for nervous dogs and make mistakes in judgment that can cost their pets their lives , Self defence can help people who have suffered this type of trauma to develop confidence and a dog with a confident pack leader will stand not run
  7. Thanks for the support , we have found some info , not very positive I am afraid , we did go back to the breeder and let them know and as far as i am aware none of her litter mates are showing or a likely to be breed from , and mum has been retired , most of the info and research is coming from overseas but from the US and my baby is european and Aussie based lines , although my vet says that this is becoming a common issue for the rotties there doesnt seem to be much based in Aus either research or advice ? thanks for the hugs , Schmoo is a sweetie and enjoying her life for now , a little less active than the other dogs but still having fun
  8. Hi I have at the moment 2 cross cattle dogs and a rottie , having lived with these breeds I have always been disappointed when people have shown fear when walking past my well behaved and placid pets , most dogs will react to aggressive behaviour be that of a human or another dog some will run and some will challenge the aggressor , neither reaction from the dog is under control or safe either for the owner or the aggressive person , would suggest that your dog is your companion and that you might want to attend self defence classes , perhaps if your GSD's boss feels a little more confident then he will to , remember we are there to protect and look after them , we are the smart humans after all
  9. Hi All I am very new to this but would like to post and hope that people might be able to offer some personal experiences and advice Our Rotty has SAS which our vet tells us is an inherited heart condition becoming more common in Rottweilers as I love my baby Schmoo I would like to know more about the condition , how long a life span might she have (she has managed 2 1/2 years so far) has any one else experienced the care of a rottie with this problem ? is there any thing for me to look out for in caring for her ? Are breeders in Australia testing for this condition ? as we would like to buy another rottie soon but the thought of the possibility losing another baby early to a bad heart if we could avoid it is heart breaking
