  1. Thanks for your replies guys! The Spotted Devil- that's good to hear about the separate vaccination! I might have to look into that
  2. Hi all, I'm looking at joining obedience club with my boy once puppy pre-school finishes, he is 17 weeks old and now fully vaccinated with 2 x C4 shots and 1 x C3. The particular club I am looking at has a new requirement that all dogs must be vaccinated with a C5 shot. Is this sort of restriction common with obedience clubs? I am going to call them later in the week during their office hours, but what do you think are the chances of me taking my pup to this club? I'd be happy to booster in 12 months time with a C5. Thanks everyone!
  3. Thanks for your input spottychick! I tried to make my voice quite a neutral, deep voice because i was worried about encouraging the defensive behaviour as you said! but it makes sense that I should act like it's nothing and be happy but without babying him- I can tell he would just looovveee to be cuddled and spoken to like a baby in these situations lol!
  4. Thanks Nekhbet! That's good to hear. So it's nothing to be worried about as such? So if I get his attention - make him sit - give him a treat, that should be ok? If he continues to bark and we have to be in the same room, do i just continue to make him sit and give him treats until he is happy to be quiet? Do you think it is something he will grow out of? I don't mind him being vocal as long as I can have some control over it haha!
  5. Hi everyone I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on my mini dachshie puppy. He is 16 weeks old and for the past week or so, he has been barking at some people, loud sounds, some other dogs etc. I believe his barking is aggressive in nature as he'll throw in a few growls, wont wag his tail etc. He has met lots of people (over 100) and I thought all the experiences were positive ones, mostly pats and some food treats from the strangers. Other than the barking he seems happy and he responds to new things the same as he always has, a little bit fearful but mostly curious and by the end of the encounter he seems happy and confident. He doesn't bark at everyone, the people he does bark at seem to be equally male and female, no children so far. The people also don't seem to be acting any different to the others. I am hoping that the barking is just a fear period thing and that he'll be happy again once he is a bit more confident? He has never been hugely excited about other people or dogs, but neutral and ok to be approached, sniffed and patted. At the moment I handle the situation by saying "NO" in a deep, strong voice and then act completely normal. If he continues to bark I'll pick him up and hold him facing the opposite direction. I have no idea what I should be doing though? I continue to socialise him and have been taking him to local cafes where he is quite happy to sit on my lap/by my feet while I have a coffee, and he gets approached by nearly every passer by (the curse of a cute puppy lol). He goes to puppy pre-school once a week and I will be joining obedience club when he's old enough. He is fully vaccinated as of this week so I'll be able to take him to some more places. I'm thinking of starting the TOT with him too. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
  6. GSDowner- The 7pup is a squeakie toy designed like a can of 7up, he just chews it etc
  7. probably: crate (for in the car) RMBs (keep my pup occupied for at least an hour) puppy classes! not sure if this counts but we love it
  8. Loving the photos everyone! Thought i'd add my boy's other favourite toy.. a yogurt container he had for about a week. This photo was taken just before it got thrown out (hope it works it's my first attached photo lol)
  9. So everyone, what's your dog's favourite toy? Currently i'd probably say my pup's favourite is his can of 7pup http://www.upscalepup.com/7pup-soda-can-de...er-dog-toy.html Links and photos would be great!
  10. Thanks everyone I think I have it sorted now! He gets half a pattie a day (maybe less when he has put on a little bit of weight but we'll see), as well as a bone of some description most days. At the moment he has lamb necks and chicken necks but I'll adventure into different bones in the future. I'm also going to buy the beef BARF because currently he has chicken, and then I'll alternate the bones (chicken neck on beef BARF day, lamb neck on chicken BARF day). Again, thanks to all
  11. lol so cute.. I just bought my bf a dachshie! being a new owner I think he should represent If it's good quality I'm sooo buying the bro-in-law a chi. That would be soooo funny for a blokey bloke! I think he'd love it!!
  12. I'm a bit worried about brisket bones from all the horror stories on here about dogs choking on them! I'm not sure what they even look like, off to google I go! What about lamb shanks?
  13. Thanks so much everyone for your replies! I bought the chicken flavoured patties last night and defrosted them as you said moosepup, he had some for breakfast this morning and gobbled it all up! So I'm very happy! A few more questions if you all don't mind? I think I'm going to feed him 3% of his body weight daily as he could put on a little weight, so that's just over 80grams a day. If I divide the pattie into 3 portions then that's 3 days worth of 75grams a day. So could I feed him that with a bone of some description each day? Or do you think he needs more of the pattie daily? How much do you guys feed with little dogs? Also do any of you alternate the flavours? I'm thinking of getting a few different flavours so he can have different ones each day (I should mention that he has an iron stomach and has never had a tummy upset from anything I've fed him!). Lastly (lol), what bones are best for little dogs? Everything I have read on here is for big dogs! From my research I think I'll try: chicken necks (he already has these), chicken carcass, fresh roo tail (no idea where I'd find this though!), lamb flaps (not sure about these?) and lamb necks. Maybe salmon heads. Any others? Thanks again everyone!
  14. Just found this on the barfaustralia website: Puppies – Small to Medium Breeds Feed 3% - 5% of bodyweight per day – divided into 3 to 4 small meals So I assume it would be suitable for pups then! I'd love some feedback still on feeding this to puppies.. Also what flavour is the yummiest (for doggies lol!). I've read on here that some smell? I know the chicken one is popular but I feed my boy chicken necks, so he probably needs red meat in his diet. Otherwise I could get lambs necks instead of chicken necks then go with the chicken patties? What red meat bones are ok for such a small boy?
  15. Hello all! I am trying to get my puppy settled on a new diet, and since he turns his nose up at his royal canin kibble, I was thinking of going BARF. Would this be ok for a puppy? He is a 14 week old mini dachshund. I'm able to get the Dr B patties from my local pet store (non pet selling). Would this be a better idea than making my own since he's a baby? I just want to make sure he gets all the right nutrients. With the patties, how much would I feed the 2.7kg fella? Do I just defrost the night before? Looking forward to hearing your words of wisdom!
  16. oh great thanks so much Gretel! I wasn't sure hehe. I'll probably give him nearly half But he's puppy training at the moment so he gets lots of snacks as well as kongs. i'll just be sure to watch his weight!
  17. Hi everyone! I just want to check with someone whether I understand the feeding guide on my puppy's food. It's Royal Canin Junior Dachshund Formula (yes I got sucked in by his picture on the packaging lol). So It says that for a dog with an adult weight of 4kgs (Which I'm guessing he will be as he is a miniature), at 3 months old he should be getting 95G of kibble for the day (so a third for brekkie, lunch and dinner). Does that seem right? It just seems like a lot more than i've been giving with his old kibble but he had mince with that too. In the Royal Canin cups it equates to a cup and 1/8th a day. He seems to be a good weight at the moment. Thanks in advance!
  18. Oh that's so good to hear BooBooBear! Poor little fella :D last night Alfie did one big sigh and then nothing else all night! So very very happy! Very tough work I agree.. Just got my crate games DVD in the mail so i'll be starting that this week..
  19. Cazwah I'm back in the bedroom! haha! Last night was the first night.. he did good! Had a cry for less than a minute then settled down. He had 3 toilet trips and each time settled straight down afterwards. A million times better than he was that first night! I'm still at the stage though where i expect him to go crazy? I basically hold my breath until i can hear him sleeping! lol
  20. Night 3, I'm still on the couch! He didn't want to settle so I patted him for a bit while he was in his crate, and now I've shut the door and he's quiet hehe. Hope tonight goes well!
  21. Well done BooBooBear! Sounds like he is learning! Alfie was in his crate last night in the lounge room again, with me sleeping on the couch. He settled down in his crate straight away, at about 10pm. He woke up at 1.30am for the toilet and then had a little cry (soft sobbing lol I could put up with that! it's the howling I can't stand!), which only lasted a few minutes then he slept till 7.30am! So I'm very happy yet at the same time I'm dreading his reaction when we are back in the bedroom.. hopefully with enough nights slept in the lounge room in his crate he'll forget that he used to get the bed! Thanks so much Cazwah I got the articles off to have a good read this morning!
  22. Oh BooBooBear, I know this is the wrong thing to say but I'm happy someone else is going through this! Lol! I feel like I'm doing something wrong!! I'm on the couch with him in the crate next to me. Far enough away from the bedrooms so if he cries hopefully it won't disturb everyone! He's asleep with no sooking so far which is an improvement! But we will see how he is after his first toilet break..
  23. Ooo thanks for the replies everyone! I will definitely call the vet, it's my first puppy in 14 years so I have no idea!
  24. Thanks for the replies I ended up putting his crate in the laundry last night and then woke up every 2hrs to take him to the toilet. He was so noisy! I have ear plugs for tonight though so it'll be back next to the bed, hopefully he'll learn soon! showdog I totally agree regarding having a dachshie in the bed! I'm a very light sleeper though and sleep on my same side all night so I'm sure he'd be ok, but still I can never be 100% sure so better to be safe than sorry!
  25. Thanks so much for your reply! He's still going.. I've only had him a week. He hasn't been 'trained' as such, I have been feeding him in his crate and he'll usually nap in there during the day. He also gathers his toys and puts them in there (hiding them from my old JRT I think). I ordered the crate games DVD just waiting for it to arrive! He slept the first 3hours of last night in his crate but after his toilet break he came into my bed (I haven't given in to his whinging yet though!!). Do you think I should continue to ignore him? I'm thinking ear plugs might be the way to go tomorrow night lol!
