  1. thanks Cosmolo, the 2 clubs where i live have wait lists, but ill book private classes! Thanks again!
  2. Hi all, i have a mini dachshie who is 1 year old. I have noticed he is getting increasingly noisy when people come over. He will bark when the doorbell rings, then bark at the people for a good 20seconds before he settles down. Still, even then he doesn't want to be patted etc. He kind of sneaks up for a sniff, usually wagging his tail, but if the person bends down to pat him he'll run away barking! I have tried getting him to sit and be quiet before i open the door, but this hasn't been working because he doesn't want the door open anyway, he wants the people to leave! Other than that, I have put him in the laundry before I open the door but he will just bark in there. He had heaps of happy socialisation as a pup, and loves certain people but hates others. i have also tried treats, but he doesn't like taking them from strangers. He barks at the fence too when he hears people wallk past, im not sure how to teach him the command 'quiet'? Any help on his barking would be greatly appreciated! We are on the waitlist for obedience club, should get in 1st term 2011 and he did puppy school..
  3. great CW EW, that's what I will do then! thanks so much for your help
  4. thanks all I gave them a good clean yesterday before i put the first dose in, CW EW did you do it just before the first dose, or also during the course?
  5. Hey Everyone! My boy has a case of gunky ears, no mites etc but the vet thought it might be worthwhile using ear drops for 8 days, twice a day to help clear it all up. I forgot to ask her whether I can clean them during the 8 days he is having the drops put in? I just use cotton wool with malacetic otic. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  6. My boy got half a DR B BARF pattie last night, this morning just a bowl of nutro puppy kibble (with his drooling 8 week old cocker spaniel cousin watching his every move!). Tonight he will get his BARF again with 3 chicken necks
  7. I alternate between this and pro-plan salmon for my boy for breakfast. He seems to like it, he has also tried royal canin dachshund and didn't eat it and ziwi peak but it is too hard for me to have to order online. The nutro I would say is his favourite, he eats the puppy chicken and rice, and looks the picture of health so I would say it's working for him! I have fed him the wet food on occasion too if I have forgotten to de-frost his nightly BARF meal, he likes those too!
  8. ReadySetGo i really dont understand the point of your posts in this thread; You havent really answered any of the questions i have asked.. I do appreciate you taking the time to post in here, and i know your position is roo tendons occasionally and bones daily, so thanks for that! Eta thanks for the reply stormie.. No go with kramar either ill go with the dried natural chews as you suggested
  9. thanks again all.. I might give him one chopped up as skruffy n flea suggested, but i didnt realise they had been recalled previously! I have given him beef tendon before but it shredded all over the place haha but this sort of thing might be my best option. I just dont like the thought of bones in the house, germs etc. The little fella isnt very consistent with chewing on a matt and i dont like having to mop the floors after he's finished. He even drops chicken necks then licks the floor afterwards! Like i said, these are only a rare treat, in fact ive had him nearly 8 months and today was his 2nd greenie. I just would like to have this sort of thing in the house if the occasion arises! Would a pigs ear be an appropriate alternative? Im guessing it wont do much for his teeth, but the bones take care of that really anyway
  10. Thanks everyone for the replies. As I had written in my first post, I give my dog bones pretty much daily (yes, that includes chicken necks/wings/frames and lamb necks etc), I was looking for something he can have on occasion inside the house (I feed bones outside with my supervision so he doesn't mess up the house). Everythings Shiny, I will definitely try the kramar brand next time! Thanks for the recc!
  11. i feed my mini dachshund greenies every now and then, usually after a bath (to clean his teeth haha!). He is just under 4kgs. I gave him the regular size today ($5 one) and he couldnt finish it, too much for him. They are available 2 sizes smaller, but these are quite small and look like they could cause choking. Should i go with the smaller size or stick with regular? I supervise when he chews them! Otherwise, are there other brands which are better for cleaning teeth? He gets RMBs almost daily but i like something he can chew inside every now and then Thanks!

  13. hmmm this all seems so familiar, I believe we are talking about my nephew I'll bring the Alf over and let him at the food, show the big fella how it's done
  14. hmm I guess I am part of the minority, but I don't want to see dogs in eating establishments. I love my boy and we will go to a cafe and sit al fresco while I have a coffee, but I think it's a bit OTT having them inside while you eat a meal. They are dogs after all, imagine if they did their business on the floor in a cafe! And I have to eat in there!
  15. black & tan, smooth haired mini dachshund in Geelong if needed spunkiest little man ever!
  16. Finally have him home with me! and he is fine ahahahah so the worry was for nothing. He isn't even groggy, he was crying at the clinic because i wouldn't let him run around with the old labrador that is there (usually he gets 5 mins with her after a visit as a treat lmao). He is trying to remove his bandage from the IV (i'll take that off later), and he is licking his privates but if that gets excessive i'll head back to the vet and get him the collar (that would just look ridiculous on a mini dachshund lol). ATM he is chewing a beef tendon. So all is well!
  17. Oh it's so good to hear all the positive stories! it is making me feel better I pick him up in an hour and 15 mins! YAY! and i'm feeling a bit better because the vet would have called by now if anything out of the ordinary happened so looking forward to picking up my boy I'm curious to see the damage though! He's so small (3.8kgs) so his manhood was quite small as well (HAHAHAHAH). Not expecting a big battle wound. I'm glad it only needs to happen once in a lifetime though haha!
  18. persephone Thank you for your response  I just dropped him off and still super nervous! I pick him up at 4, it's going to be a long wait! Happy to hear its only minor for the boys.. just hope he's not too sooky!
  19. aww thanks everyone for the kind replies! I'm sure he will be fine.. It is hard to remember the positive aspects when it's putting him through pain though!
  20. I have read a few threads so I know I'm not alone but my little man is getting desexed tomorrow and I can't help but worry!! I don't want to leave him there alone the poor mite! How irrational am I?! hahaha I didn't get much information from the vet when I called, I was too distracted by my worry! I don't feed him breakfast in the morning because of the anaesthetic? He is getting dropped off at 9.30 and the operation will happen around 11 apparently.. Is there anything I need to have ready for when he gets home? I got him some nutro wet food for a dinner treat and a few different chews to keep him occupied over the next few days. I will pick up a soft elizabethan collar if he needs one, my sister said lanolin on the stitches can stop licking too? Has anyone heard anything about that? He is sleeping in my bed at the moment, the thought of him being in pain breaks my heart!
  21. Thanks everyone for your input! To be honest I'm leaning towards ZiwiPeak, if he likes the treats chances are he'll like the food? would it be worth while feeding him a bowl of treats to see if he eats them up... if they are essentially the same (or very similar) to the food? saves me waiting for ZiwiPeak samples then i can just order a full size online.. I'll still try him on the EP holistic select mini though.. such a tough decision hahaha. Do people alternate their dog's food? Do they get sick of the same thing everyday?
  22. I just went to 2 of my local pet food shops and neither had ZiwiPeak kibble, one had venison and mussel treats so I got some of those and he loves them! I emailed the distributor (prestige pet products) and she's going to send me some samples, great customer service! I got some samples of the EP holistic select small and mini breed puppy formula, and also the small and medium breed puppy formula (would this be ok to feed him long term? even though he is a mini?). The strange this is, even though they had samples of the mini formula they don't actually stock it? Has anyone seen it around? petsonthepark.com.au have it so if he loves it i can get it from there.. What do people think of nutro and nutrience? the shops seemed to have heaps of stuff from them but are they as good as the artemis/EP/ZiwiPeak? would i be better off with artemis if the EP and ZiwiPeak proves to hard to get? Sorry for the million and one questions..
  23. Thanks so much everyone for the replies! I'll have a look at the EP holistic select and the ziwipeak I think.. price isn't really a concern because he is only 4kgs so wont go through much of it for only 1 meal a day! The $23 box of BARF will take him 2 months to go through if he gets the kibble LMAO! So with the ziwipeak I get any of the flavours and they are ok for puppies? doesn't seem they have a puppy specific formula and the feeding guide includes puppies. And with the EP, i'd do with the holistic small and mini breed?
  24. Hey everybody! I need a bit of help choosing a kibble for my little man. He is a 6 month old mini dachshund, and atm he is getting Dr B BARF patties and raw bones most days. I'm thinking of feeding him kibble in the mornings for his 'breakfast cereal' lol. I tried once before with RC junior mini dachshund formula, but he wouldn't touch it (my parent's 15 year old JRT on the other hand loved it hahaha). I have noticed my dachshund tries to steal the JRTs kibble though (she just gets supercoat when she's not eating dinner scraps or my dog haha) so I know he can eat the stuff! So, nutritionally speaking they seem similar unless there is something I am missing? In regards to taste, which should I try first? Which is the most popular and 'yummy'? Looking forward to your responses! Oh and ETA: What do people think about the canned foods from ziwipeak and eagle pack? Would this be a special occasion thing or could i feed him this instead of the BARF? i don't ever really hear people mention them..
