No way!!! I wouldn't go back there if someone paid me! I should of realised that it was going to be an interesting experience when I got out the car with Poppy and she said "Oh my, it's only a puppy" all surprised! I had told her on the phone AND via email that Poppy was 8 months old!

I just edited my post.

A while ago I posted a thread about an experience I had taking Poppy to be groomed. I just wanted her nails clipped, her bottom shaved and a hydrobath. The women gave her a COLD hydrobath and carried on the whole time I was there how terrible it was that I had probably supported a puppy farm but buying Poppy. She made me feel like CR@P!!! But I stood up for myself and explained we didn't know then what we knew now. She told me how she works with the RSPCA (LIE!) and shuts down puppy farms! She told me how she rescues dogs and re-homes them. She had 8 - 10 Cattle Dog X puppies at the time. She mentioned she advertised on GUmtree and told me to keep an eye out as she regularly gets CKCS. Anyway...I did look her up on Gumtree. She has new dogs advertised WEEKLY!!! She rarely desexes them and the puppies are re-homed before 8 weeks. But this ad that I found today really takes the cake!!! She is advertising a "breeding" pair of maltese X shitzu's who are 1.5 years old. They have ALREADY had pups together and she states they may be with pups now!!! Apparenlty puppy farmers are terrible but she is okay with BYB's!!! ;)

Dr. Chris Brown On 7pm Project Tuesday Night...
PoppyDog replied to Fevah's topic in General Dog Discussion
I was in tears too! Especially over the footage of the two Cav's at the vet! ;) I REALLY liked how the lady from the RSPCA spoke about reputable AND registered breeders and mentioned that registered breeders can be unethical too! I think it was great that they showed shocking footage and specifically linked puppy farms to websites and pet shops. I wish I has seen things like this in the media before we got Poppy. -
Poppy is not a barker so to speak. She will bark at specific things, like if someone comes to the door or if someone walks past our fence. She will bark at dogs on the T.V, pigs on the T.V AND the Elephants on the Optus T.V ad! Yesterday evening she kept going outside and barking. I would call her in and she would sit with us for a while then back outside and bark. I went to the door and told her "No, SHHH!" numerous times and eventually just shut the back door! Anyway this morning when I let her out I noticed a HUGE digger at our back fence, almost hanging OVER our fence! She barked at it! THAT is what she was barking at last night! The block behind us is un-developed and I'm assuming that is going to change over the coming weeks. Any advice on how to teach Poppy that she doesn't need to bark at the digger and workman etc etc that I am sure will frequent the block behind us over the next few weeks? Thanks in advance!

Our vet at puppy preschool said that they were identifiable by the different coloured legs to their body. From you first photo I would say no, but the second photo looks very much like the pictures on this website... http://www.vetstop.com.au/info/tick.asp Hope someone with more knowledge can come along and give you more info! And hope Jenna is okay!

Hugs for you! That is very sad! Is it Oliver? The dog in your sig? It says he is only 10 months old? I think all your ideas are great! It's so nice that your spoiling him and taking him to to the beach is a great idea too! I hope you can find someone to do the paw print jewellry! Thats such a lovely idea! ;)

Got her some Capstar from Woolies. Didn't realise there were 6 tablets! Very economic! I gave it to her and then gave her a thigh chicken piece to chew on outside. But then I read it said on the box to give with a small piece of dogs favourite treat. Hope this won't effect how it works?
-
Thanks Rachie! I've only seen one on her. Well 2 but I managed to kill the other. And I tried looking for more in her coat but couldn't see any. So I'm really hoping I've caught them early! She sleeps on our bed and everything so we don't want a flea infested dog! I noticed her scratching a bit the last few days but I thought it was because she was due for a bath!
-
Okay, will try the capstar first and hold off on the bombs. :D It has been wet and humid here! Gawd I hope we don't have a plague of them! Poppy is very much an indoor girl and I don't want fleas in the house!!! Oh thats good! So if she has caught them from the BC's we spent the day with over the weekend then they shouldn't breed?
-
Thanks. I'm hoping they haven't set up shop in our house! But might bomb it anyway...can't hurt right? It won't ruin the carpet or anything will it? Coz we're in a rental? I can get the bombs from the supermarket too can't I?
-
Thanks! So I can give her Capstar this afternoon and then wash her on the weekend? And I've read to give it outside because the fleas literally die and fall off? Is that right? My poor Pop's! I feel like a bad Mummy! Are fleas more prevelant in coastal areas? The two BC's we spent the day with are outside dogs so I wonder if this makes them more suseptable to fleas and thats how she got them??? Oh and where can I get Capstar? Supermarket?
-
I think Poppy has fleas!!! She has NEVER had fleas. I treated her with her monthly flea, worm and heartworm chew on the 1st of Sept and then we went to the coast. I think she has got them while we were there! On Sunday I was giving her a cuddle and noticed a black thing crawling on her belly. I picked it off and killed it and thought maybe it was a bug. I've never seen fleas before. Then today I noticed another black bug on her tummy but it jumped out of sight before I could kill it so now I'm wondering was the thing I saw on Sunday also a flea??? What can I use to treat her since I gave her the Sentinal Spectrum only 10 days ago? I've read about capstar tablets? Should I use that? Or a spot on treatment? She is due for a bath so I'm thinking maybe the tablet is a better idea! Help!!!

Websites are a good starting point, but a schmick website doesn't mean a good breeder. What is in the shop window isn't necessarily what is behind the counter. A breeder can say ANYTHING on their website, but it doesn't mean that they believe them. Many will say what they think people EXPECT them to say. If you've been reading any of the threads in General recently, there is mention there of a breeder saying one thing on her website but apparently practicing differenly in real life. The best thing you can do is to meet the breeders, at the least talk to them on the phone. Establish a rapport with them and use your intuition to decide whether or not you believe in them. I think I know the thread or should I say threads you are referring to in the Genral section! I hope that doesn't happen too often! I do have a breeder on my FB who is also heavily involved in showing and with the QLD club for that breed. She also lives close to me so she seems like a perfect fit but I don't know if she has any more litters planned for this year... Breeders heavily involved with their breed club are usually a good place to start. Most get involved with a breed club because they wish to do what is best for the breed. also if she doesn't have any litters planned, she can probably recommend someone else that does. Oh goody! I've sent her a PM on FB to ask if she has any litters planned. I really want someone close by so I can go visit my puppy she he/she grows. I wonder though if breeders allow that? Hmm... I wouldnt allow it.. No one comes and see's the pups till they have their first shots of needles That makes sense. One website I looked at mentioned that they liked and encourage new owners to visit their puppies. But maybe they meant after their first jabs?

Thanks for the info. Does the breeders website having information about why to avoid DD's, pet shops and puppy famrs/mills point towards an ethical and reputable breeder? Are websites a good place to start of can you only gain so much from them?
-
Thanks! This finding a reputable breeder thing is a bit of a mind field for the average Jo! I wasn't sure if these two things were big no no's!
-
Are breeders that breed 3 different breeds less reputable than ones who focus on just ONE breed??? If they had 3 of one breed mated in one month does this make the reputable or not?

I think that all her great experiences with other dogs will hopefully over ride this one! It's interesting that someone else said they could see their dogs brain ticking over as they thought about how to react to the actions of the other dog. I really saw this in Poppy too! A bit later she went and chased one of their chickens! Naughty Poppy! But came straight back to me when I called her! Good Poppy! My cousins joked that she was getting her own back as the chickens were the same colour and similar size as one of their dogs. I wouldn't be comfortable having all three dogs off leash. I just wouldn't. So I think they are just 2 doggies that aren't going to be playmates for Poppy!
-
Hmm, interesting. You could tell Poppy was VERY confused by the whole situation. She lay on the ground and did the whole submissive thing and then when this JRT X came for her again she scuttled away, tail between her legs, to hide behind me. And you could tell she was thinking WTF is this dog doing. I did nothing! I think knowing that these dogs were in the laundry made her anxious. She slept like a log on Sat night. RIGHT next to me. Like up next to my head. She usually sleeps in her own bed or at the feet of our bed. I think next time I will stay with our friends with the BC's. They were so calm and happy together. Ususally Poppy goes inot crazy play mode and doesn't stop but she was very chilled with these two BC's and while they did have play they also seemed relaxed together. :D
-
Over the weekend Poppy and I went to stay with my cousins on the coast. My cousins have 2 JRT X's and two small children aged 4 and 2. So the new environment and people and small children was all very exciting for Pop's! She was so well behaved and so beautiful with the children. Made me very proud! Hehe! We also met with some friends of ours who have 2 BC's that are 2 years old and a 6 year old and 8 year old. We took the dogs (Poppy and the 2 BC's) and went to the beach for a big walk. It was great. Poppy sniffed "Hello" to lots of different dogs. None of them reacted badly to her and she didn't react badly to any. It was interesting to see a Sibe/Husky sniff her all friendly like and then a minute later get its heckles up at on of the BC's. I wonder why dogs react differently to others. Hmmm... Anyway back to my cousins and their two JRT X's. One they got as a young pup. He was well socialised, went to puppy preschool and obedience and was a great little dog. Then they got number 2. He was adopted by them at 10 months of age and from what my cousins could gather he was basically ignored for the first 10 months of his life. His owners didn't have time for him and thats why they rehomed him. So he was always a bit more agressive towards other dogs but since my cousins have moved to the coastal hinterland they admit the doggies haven't been socialised as much as they were when they lived in the city. So we tried to introduce Poppy to them 1 at a time. On leash of course. It was horrible. I've never seen a dog do that and I've never seen Poppy so afraid. She was hiding behind my legs as the JRT X pulled on the leash so hard that his collar was almost choking him. He also made the "I want to rip your throat out" noise and little yappy barks. The second JRT did the same thing. Later when my cousin went into the laundry to feed them Poppy whimpered and ran under my chair! I almost didn't start this thread for fear of being told I did something wrong by exposing Poppy to this but I want to know if this experience could have or will have any negative effect on her? It's the ONLY negative experience she has had with other dogs and he positive ones are plentiful! Thanks in advance.

 Will try my best to snap a pic while also holding her mouth open! Hehe!

PF - That's what I thought. I don't know if it's a retained baby tooth. Will have to have a better look this afternoon. It was just small and close the the gum. It didn't look like a broken tooth but will have a closer look!
