I will try tonight placing it but I think if I just place it on the ground and go and do some work I might as well not have it at all, he will not be interested in it. I have to throw it at some stage, so he can see it and than work longer and longer for an opportunity to go and get it. Is this ok? I have some more specific questions I will write you an emial. -

Lablover :D Its a public golf course, so anyone is allowed to walk there, dogs inclued (leashed) at their own risk. Yes I have a very good relationship with the chief greenkeeper :D :D I walk out and if I see that his car is gone I know he wont be chasing me The trick is that he is definitelly affraid of my dog, and normally to get somewhere he rides a little motorbike. On occasion when I fail to recognise that he is still at work I might go and see him somewhere at a distance on the bike. He of course will spot me as well. But he will not come up to me on the bike so he has to ride to the base to get a car to come and chase me, and by the time he does this, Im gone. I never take a lead (I guess that is the biggest problem) but at some stage when I was teaching Rex a recall he had a long long line attached dragging (30m long). The guy spotted me and came to tell me off, I picked up the end of the line and said - Im sorry but my dog is on lead In reality Im breaking the law, dogs off lead are not allowed there. My dog has never bothered anyone, I always choose a faiway with no players, I go there to train at dusk when there is noone there. It wouldnt cross my mind to go during the day on weekend, there is just to many people and too many golf balls flying, too dangerous. Players often come up to me and talk to me, or observe from a distance. Its only one guy there that has a problem with me being there. But when on boxing day he was cutting grass right outside my bedroom window I sure let him know what I think of that. with a smile of course. -

The moment I posted at 6pm I was out the door for some training. Just walked in. 1.5 hour of continuous brain excercise. Heeling with seek back for a toy, accidently threw a toy into some heavy bushes, he had to find it, took him a while. Out of sight stays plus I came up with a new excercise, really silly - I have a stick and wave it above his head, or touch him with it and he has to do some stuff for me, ball hidden at the back of me or thrown somewhere. Drops on recall, sits on recall, stand stay on a walk (hopeless at that) Some of these I have never done before (seek back, stand stay on walk) Plus in all of that I asked for focus on my face (which can at times be a challenge in itself) but got it majority of time. He might be brain tired but he isnt physically tired as much. Ill go again after dark so he can have a good no brainer run After all I need to excercise as well, physically that is -

I always thought that others call me a genius for a reason or are you reffering to my dog? If the dog - than it takes a genius to put up with me, so in my eyes he is my little I do that already, although I think I usually carry the item, sometimes hidden behind my back. Although I dont question nor opose anything you say, just one comment, he considers the big throw a reward if I kick the ball or throw it a short distance I might as well have it in my hand. To let him capture the ball in my hand is not rewarding enough, or sometimes, on occasion. He just gives up and is not so keen any more. I have put several clips and you have an idea what he does and for how long before I reward. Yes we need improvement of the tasks and the duration, no doubt. One more question, after he had enough running, excercising, training and Im on my way home I sometimes let him carry the ball home. He seems very proud and happy about it. Should I let him? I confiscate the ball as soon as we arrive at the gate but should I be confiscating it earlier? Some other days I ask to do something than pretend to throw the ball, and hide the ball than he realises that it just dissapeared. What should I be doing, or not doing? What I also wanted to say when I mentioned that he collapses exhusted is that its not only form the physical running, he is all the time required to do something, rarely that he is to run and sniff bushes on his own. There are ducks and a goose on the golf course that he would like to chase, every day I go over there and practice stuff near those birds, or I let him wonder around and he of course wonders closer and closer to the birds. He gets a recall and more excercises. As the recall is my main concern that is the nr 1 excercise. As there are no dogs that I can use as a distraction I use those birds. With some pride I say that daily I get an audience made out of golfers watching me play with my dog. Im back at my original question, not relating to my dog, just in general. Do they always want more an more? --- damn quotes not working -

I will start a subject on my Polish forum re dog agression in the old days v's today. Im interested what will they say. Where I come from we all lived in apartments, in a big city, all dogs live in the flats with their owners, that is either now or in the past when I was a little girl growing up. Space for walks was limited as the only availabe area was between blocks of units. I ahve to admit that the blocks were large 10-15 floors and quite far appart, usually few in an area than a school, some shops etc. So only some dogs romed the streets, plus we have winter and snow to take into consideration. As a girl I was deprived of owning a dog so Id go to another block of flats and borrow a dog to take for a walk. Cyrus the GWP was my buddy and Id take him almost every day. He happily went with me, Id let him off lead and I ahve to admit if he didnt come back Id know that he would go back home, and find his way to the 11th floor whee he lived. Noone desexed the dogs but I recall that practically everyone took dogs to the club for some training. That is of course in the city where I lived, a different story was in the country. People still live in those flats and still there is the same amount of space for the dogs to excercise. Plus the law over there is that your dog has to be either on lead OR wearing a muzzle. There are no leash free parks et, every park can be leash free. Very interesting to see if there is a difference. -

New question Once the dog clicks in his mind about prey drive satisfaction do they want more and more and more of it? Lets say in the beginning they are happy with 10 minutes twice a day and after a while they want 20 minutes 5 times a day? Im talking about a grown up dog that has learned this later in life not about a pupp that was trained like that from the start. The reason Im asking is that I notice somewhat an increase in my dogs need for the drive satisfaction. He will basically run and play tug with me until he almost collapses exhusted. On several occasions he was so willing and so eager to do it that I practiced and practiced and the throw of a ball is a reward so there were losts of throws and he basically hyperventilated himself to the point that I was worried about his health/wellbeing. Not to mention that after he runs like a maniac and overdoes it he is limping slightly next day, but still wants to inflict more of the same on himself. -

Would that also be that years ago dogs were treated more like dogs (lets say harshly) not like family members sleeping on leather lounges? Hence they would see the owners as true alpha? -

My dog has been to the vets about 10 times in his 6 years. Blood tests, stiches under general anastetic. he is not worried, in fact he thinks visit at the vets is great fun But I have to say this would be one of the last things Id worry when I think about bringing a puppy up. Well "socialised" dogs on the streets - the biggest worry for me..... got chased by a GR on sunday. Around the block, around corners, around fences, gates, cars and trees where I tried hiding. Run out of breath and possible hiding places... arrrghhhh At least the dog was friendly... but mine wasnt.... After the owner fianlly cought up with us I MADE him stand there hold his dog and I let Rex sniff the dogs back end and than say hello nicely. The guy just did what I told him to do he had no option I told him that next time instead of trying to get away with my dog I will just unclip the lead - and he belived me Appologised 30 times in 3 minutes. I think what majority of people think by a "well socialised dog" term is that the dog is not agro and wants to play.... with anything, and everything, and anyone and everyone. -

Kavik if you set it up and a dog goes up to a person and the person doesnt pet it... Im guessing if you set it up enough times the dog will not go to people for pets as it will think it wont get them. I handled K9s male some time ago I gave him pets (Kayne that is, not K9) stroke his ears, rubbed his back etc. No worries, he didnt ask for more, nor moved away. I guess it was as - yeah whatever, wanna scratch do it, dont want, fine as well. Those that were at the last workshop all commented on Xena that followed me like a shadow (not my dog BTW) and she didnt really go to anyone for pets, wasnt bothered about other dogs or people. That is a dog that was somewhat (big somewhat) brought up in that method. You want to pet her she will let you, and with time will seek more, but not like my Rex that will demand attention, unless told to go away. -

Jeff - GSD was a dead give away when it rolled on its back when the owner tried to put the leash back on after it finished... Ill try to have a crack at this question. Neutralisation wuldnt mean locking the dog up in the yard and not letting it see the world. The dog would have been taken out and exposed to various stimuli (crowd, kids, dogs) and guided back to the owner (where the satisfaction comes from) That would expose the dog to various scenarios but would not assign any value to the scenario apart from reinforcing that all goodness comes form the owner. How am I doing? -

K9 Yes, Kavik and I were at the sch nationals and it was obvious which dog was trained in prey drive and which one in aviodance. As to drive in obiedience doing some heelwork - IMHO very nice work.Jazz is 3yo and Erika is not a dog trainer, but check out all the titles this dog already has. For those that know me and some of the dogs I talk about - Jazz is a litter sister to "my"Xena that I had with me at the K9's handlers workshop, and Kea Also in regards to dogs that have UD titles but no manners at home. I have had a CDX dog visiting not that long ago at my place. Jumped on the kitchen bench in attempt to steal food. 2.5 yo. Pulled on lead on the walk to the park, not drastic but it did. Got up on the couch, was told off , got off and during the day got up on the couch several times. Lovely dog and overall a great pet, but CDX in the ring hasnt got a lot to do with manners at home. -

in schutzhund some also bring out the highest peak and than "beat" the dog up just slightly to have it under control. From what I understand thats old school and there is a better way. Hopefully someone will enlighten us, either in this subject of somewhere else. -

Yes - iteresting Tess. There has to be a higher value coming from the owner (or enough aversive appied) for the dogs to leave the sheep and not chase them for ever. I took a small clip last night of my dog chasing a goose. Goose is of a very high value, but the ball I have is also presious. If I have time Ill upload tomorrow to demonstrate. -

But the dog in the other thread is not to herd sheep... in fact its not to chase them nor kill them. I dont think sheepdog have a high value for the sheep, I think they consider them as part of an excercise and reward comes from the owner not from the sheep. I of course know hothing about herding and someone correct me if Im wrong please. On the note of the dog leaving the premises etc. Some of you might remember that some person let my dog out some time ago and went missing. I belive that the only reason he was missing from the area is becouse he was hit by the bus and run in panic and got lost. Why do I think that? Becouse I have a gate in my yard that opens onto a golf course. One day I came home from work and the gate was wide open (did I forget to close it the night before? did someone jumped the fence and got out through the gate?), dog didnt go anywhere, although he had an opportunity to, all day. I also walk at night at that golf course and in complete darkenss I might "loose" him - never ever that he was gone for more than few minutes. Will all the possums out there for him to chase....... as seen here he'd rather be at home. pgm are you talking prey drive? I think you can get a compliant dog with no prey drive, even for utility ring. -

But I thought you are visiting me at Easter for a change..... as a WAE coordinator I need volounteers for the test, I have majority but need an agressor - do you want to do it? :D -------- Sorry everyone back on track. So whats the story with drug detection and AQIS dogs, how do they get picked for the work? Are they also placed with families and than trained? -

too expensive? is it cheaper to wash XX dogs to get one good one? of course I dont know how many they wash out, but I cant imagine it be a small number considering that pupps get into everything pet dogs do than suddnely all the freedom is taken away form them.... Do guide dog people pay puppy care takers? I have also walked with a lady that had two labs that were failed drug detection dogs.... I wonder how many dogs go through those programs and get rehomes deemed not suitable, where in fact they actually were suitable. -

I have got another question. This time its in regards to guide dogs. From what I understand a pupp goes onto living in a family enviroment and at the age 12 months (?) its training starts with the guide dog people. I used to meet in the park a guy that would have the young pupps potentially going to be guide dogs, the dog he had, run around with Rex, was certainly not neutralised. So wouldnt it be better for those young pupps not to be in the family situations? They can be used to chasing cats, have dog issues, be willing to chase bikes, cars etc by the time they grow up. How do guide dog peole train and overcome the problems? Do they overcome the problems or do they just discard the puppy and choose another one etc?
