  1. Nushie - Adult Kongs are stronger and harder to chew. I've got the puppy kong but the dog trainer in puppy school say that BC has a strong jaw and I should buy an adult instead. I think it depends on the jaw strenght of your dog's breed. I am not sure of pug's jaw strenght though. BF - Zoe is so lovely~ Oreo bounces his kongs around to make the dry kibbles drop out. I think each dog will find its own way to play with the kong. Yeah I agree with giving too much liver treats will cause diarrhoea. I mean put a bit at the end of the kong so the puppy will not get it and it can occupy them for the whole day. Haha. Nic
  2. Nushie - where would you leave your puppy when you are away? Use the weekend to toilet-train him. I heard people put liver treats at the end of the kong so the puppy would not get it so they won't lose interest. Then soften the dry kibbles and squeeze it in. You can put a bit of peanut butter to get him interested. Some people freeze it so the kong would last longer but I wouldn't do it for your puppy yet because he still haven't learn to play with the kong yet. Make it easy first for them first and they will love the kong when they are older. I heard of the Kong dispenser. You might want to check it out. You can set a timer then kong will dispense at the time you set it. If your puppy has chew toys, they can't bark. =D don't worry too much if you are not home. if you play and train him to mentally stimulate him, Puppies will happily sleep the whole day while you are at work. Hope that helps.
  3. Magstar - My gf's aunties and uncles have been buying stuff for Oreo as well. He have been given a couple of toys and poo bag dispenser. He is a spoilt brat. Michelle - I have also been training Oreo to come at home, which he came most of the time. But when he was at the puppy school, he is too busy going around to play with other puppies that he didn't came to us. Otherwise he did pretty well in SIT and DOWN. Nic
  4. magstar - So glad you had a good time. Haha everyone is preoccupied with puppies. Its normal~ Are you looking at a boy or girl? Hope you get your favourite puppy! michelle - what did you learn in your obedience class? Have been walking Oreo (13weeks pup) and he is behaving so well outside. He gets excited very easily when he see other dogs so I just let him say "hi" and I leave because he will nip the other dog's ears. He needs to learn not to do that first. Haha I also went to a local pet shop with him and he is performing tricks for everyone in the pet shop. He "shake", "sit" and "drop" for everyone. Everyone love him. Nic
  5. I have a pure Border Collie puppy and he is really full on. What I do with him is that I try to keep him calm. I take note of when he is getting excited and stop play before that. That really helps a lot. I praise and reward him whenever he is calm and just sitting around. My dog trainer in puppy school told us to massage and talk to them in calm voice so they won't get excited. I found that if I talk to him in a calm voice, he will be calm. I also do a lot of training with him to tire him out. Do you have Kong for him to bite? Its very self-rewarding because whenever the dog chews on it, food comes out. It worked for us. I also bought a lot of "chewy" food for him to chew. Hope that helps.
  6. Thanks for your answer. I do remember when my puppy goes toilet. That is why I could work out that he needs to go wee every 3 hours. My puppy is a Border Collie and I have been training him to go toilet outside and on newspaper. My puppy can hold on at night for a long time but because he contracted urinary tract infection when he came, I don't want to risk him contracting it again. He is toilet-trained pretty well except when he decides to get naughty one night, and pee on my bed. That is the only accident in 1 week. Nic
  7. Michelle - Georgia must be very tired after the playdate. Look at her sleep . I wish I had somebody who I can have puppy play date with as well. I am trying to persuade my girlfriend's auntie into getting a dog. She wanted a dog for a long time but her husband says he doesn't have the patience to teach the dog. We'll see how it goes because her auntie loves dogs a lot. BF - I give Oreo water all the time because I am afraid that his urinary tract infection might come back. Well, I'll just have to keep waking until he is older. But he holds his bladder really well so that is a sigh of relief for me. Magstar - I also didn't get to choose Oreo. The breeder asked everyone which puppy they prefer (by looking at pictures on the breeder's website). I chose a typical BC looking dog as my first choice and Oreo as my second choice. When we were informed we got Oreo, we were very happy as he got the most naughty-looking and special-looking ear ever! Haha I was glad I got him because when I picked him up from the airport, he was licking my face and my girlfriend's face. Such a lovely boy. But since you got a choice, maybe choose a puppy that really bonds to you? I think its more important to get a dog that bonds to you because you are going to spend at least 10 years with him/her. Its my silly opinion but I would choose a puppy that bonds to me. Nic
  8. Have a read at dogstardaily.com. There are lots of information on raising a puppy which helps me quite a lot. Like what Charles say, after play, after food and when they wake up. I think every puppy is different though. My 13 weeks old puppy holds on for 3 hours before he wants to go. I bring him outside every 2 hours but he looks at me like I am an idiot and he just wants to play. How long can a 13 weeks pup hold though?
  9. BF - How old is Zoe now? What time does she did her last pee before getting up at 6.30am? Last night, Oreo peed at 12am before i put him into bed. I set an alarm to wake up at 4am but I saw him still sleeping happily in his crate so I didn't wake him up. When i wake up at 7.15am, he is still asleep so i wake him up to go pee outside. He did a big pee and then a bit of poo and then wee again then poo again. I was like "OMG! How can he contain that much." I think I will wake him up in the middle of the night for the wee. Nic
  10. Put in a blanket for him you mean, maybe? Yeah he has a lot of blankets but he's a very short coated breed. Though now he's older, and in a the larger crate .. he has a choice if he sleeps near the warmth or away from it. My adult Pointer wear PJs, as do most short coated breeds. Ivy has her own personal jacket, like your Border Collie Yeah that was what i meant Sorry for the bad english. I started on clicker training. Hope it will make training easier. Nic
  11. Nushie - Use Urine-off which seems to be recommended by quite a few people. BB - Woah your training seems to be going well. Maybe you could put a blanket for him. My boy lets me hug for about 3 seconds so I guess he feels hot. He is a long-haired Border Collie though. Last time I ask a Japanese Spitz breeder and it cost $1200 to bring a Spitz to Melbourne. Frodo's mum - She is so lovely. Damo & Jaws - At least you get to meet him at 6 weeks which is good. Wait awhile more~ Short update on Oreo - He is now 7.2kg comparing that to 4.6kg when he just arrives. Haha He sure grows a lot. He nipped on 3 other puppies' ears in the puppy pre-schooll. It must be quite painful because they yelp. According to the dog trainer, he does that because of his herding instinct because BC nips on the heel or the ear to get the sheep moving. I am getting him into more advanced class so that he won't bite other puppies. It is so weird that he bites on other puppies because he won't bite any human being. Maybe because he gets too excited when he sees other dogs. He was going very well with his TT until he feels he need our attention that he went to pee on my bed! We have a place for him to toilet indoor which he goes to but he just feels like peeing on my bed that night. Is it because he wants to mark his area? Nic
  12. Nushie - Sounds exciting. More pictures please! Get some eucalyptus oil spray as dogs hates the smell. It will be very useful when they chew on something you don't want them to. Oreo chews on my the chair's legs so we spray some and he doesn't bite. Get Kong as well because they got something to chew and won't destroy your stuff. Hope that helps. BF - Well I think puppies just love things that move. Oreo goes for ANYTHING that moves including his own shadow. He thinks that chasing shadow is fun so he just keeps going for them. Silly boy. I had Oreo sit down and let me file his nail. But I can only get his front paws done because it was taking too long and he wants to play. But grooming his hair was a brace, he doesn't love it but he doesn't hates it as well.
  13. BB - I love the second picture. Ivy is like " look! I am the boss around here!" haha
  14. jakeyjangels - I don't use choker. I just put him on a leash and brings him to the door. Then i will just ask him to sit on the floor and wait till i say "ok" then we will go for a short walk. He now sits nicely for me to put on his leash (if he is not distracted). Haha just spray something which contains eucalyptus on his leash and he won't bite it(the dog trainer taught us that). Oreo totally hates eucalyptus oil smell so when he smell it, he will let go of the leash. Now we don't need it because when i say "leave", he will drop the leash because he know that if he holds on to the leash, I won't walk. I am also working on the "stay" part because when i say "good boy"(i don't use clicker), he runs towards me. BB - good when hearing that they are Toilet Training well. Oreo had a couple of accidents lately because when my guests come to my house, there was too much distraction for me and him. He gets too excited and sometimes he will just wee. Sometimes its my fault that I forgot that he needs to go toilet. How did you introduce your dog to the new puppy? I am trying to introduce Oreo to my auntie's cat but her cat hates him. haha I have a confession to make, just now when i was carrying Oreo, I accidentally dropped him because he struggled and caused him to sprain his ankle a bit. Then I massage for him so now he is back to his running. It don't seem to bother him so I hope its alright.
  15. Try going to youtube and type in "loose leash walking". Putting a treat behind your heel and get him to walk to you. I have been trying to apply what they teach and it seems to work quite good. My puppy school dog trainer said that you could use a food to lure them to look at you and then reward them for following you. If the puppy does not focus on you while walking, you could try walking faster. My pup works well on this. I am by no means expert but that was what i learnt in puppy school and on youtube.
  16. Its quite normal for a dog to eat poo. My gf's Toy poodle eats his own poo because he eats too fast and some of the food is not properly digested. Dog's sense of smell is good so they could sniff the food out of the poo. This might be a reason if your dog eats too fast.
  17. Lily123 - Getting them to wait for their meal will let them become calmer and they learn to respect you as well. BF- Your training seems good. Michelle - How lucky of you as she slept through the night. I have managed to teach Oreo that there is a place for him to go toilet in the house. It has been raining and the backyard is all muddy. He went out twice and got so dirty that I use water to run through him One question - What tricks have you guys been teaching your puppies? I have been teaching Oreo "sit", "down", "come", "stay", "wait", "shoosh" and "hand-shake". Tried teaching him to "fetch" but keep failing. Nic
  18. BF - I learnt from my puppy school the way to let your puppy calm down before eating. Use a leash on her and hold her back. Then put the meal in front of her and make sure she cannot reach it. Hold her back and say "wait" till she calm down then ask her to "eat". That worked quite well for all the puppies in the puppy school and we are training Oreo on it now. Oreo managed to escape once (twice actually) again. We need to find a secure way to keep him at home. Maybe put his tent in our spare room so even if he escapes, he won't be able to destroy anything. Nic
  19. Lindainfa - Oreo is a Border Collie so you can imagine how his name came about. BF - The scratch didn't hurt but left a cut across my right cheek which is quite obvious. I am feeding him raw chicken(sometimes chicken wing), dry food(Coprice which is what the breeder has been feeding him) and 4legs meatballs(also what the breeder feeds him. I am thinking of changing to either Eukanuba or BARF. But I am not too sure about how to get the proportions right for BARF so maybe I will feed him BARF when he becomes an adult. That way, he won't miss any important nutrients for growing. Frodo's mum - I love your puppy's ears. It is so cute. Sorry for the ignorant, how big does Frenchies grow up into? I came back from university just now and found Oreo out of his play tent The first time, he pushed the whole play tent down but did not get out. Today he managed to get out and had fun around the house. When i open the door, he was wagging his tail and looking at me like "look, I am so smart!" ;) I trained him to walk on leash just now and I heeded the dog trainer's advice of walking faster with Oreo. It worked! because he was too busy keeping up with me that he didn't really did much pulling but he still chase cars. When he chase after cars then I will just stop and take 2 steps back. That seems to work good. He is so tired after having so much fun just now and he is sleeping so soundly now. Nic
  20. Hi Jadesmara, my puppy is 12 weeks today and had his second booster. The dog trainer in the puppy school said we could bring him out for walks but make sure he doesn't come in contact with any dogs that haven't been vaccinated or any wee/poo on the ground. He said socialisation is important and most dogs get euthanized because of behavioural problems. I just sent an email to my puppy's breeder and ask what she has to say about bringing my puppy out for walk. Will update when i receive her reply.
  21. Lindaaifa - Welcome. The wait will be worth it! BF - Zoe is so cute. She is such a poser. Haha cute! Jakeyjangels - I am also thinking of getting Oreo (my BC puppy) a younger brother/sister he can play with when he get older. He is always full of energy so I think that I should get a play mate for him because I won't be there to play with him all the time. Michelle - Hong Kong is fun right? My girlfriend came from Macau (I am Indonesian) so I went to visit her during our university holidays. All our friends studying in Melbourne are from Hong Kong. Its a beautiful place and shopping paradise. 2 days will past by soon! Little update on Oreo - he keeps farting and its damn smelly He always don't know that he is tired and he gets crazy over it. So now i know that once he gets very exctited, its either he need to wee/poo or he wants to sleep. We will then take him out for toilet (he toilet on command (sometimes)) and we put him in his play tent to sleep. He gave me a scratch across my face today because when I carry him and he got too excited. Nic
  22. I also have many cuts from oreo's bites. But it's getting softer. I use soft smack on his mouth when he bites too hard. He is so excited whenever there is someone. He tried climbing up everyone when he sees them. Been telling my guest to ignore him when he climbs. Play with him once he gives a good sit. Been trying to teach him all tricks to keep him occupied. Need to learn to fade the lures though. If there is no food, he won't respond. Haha Millie your boy ia gorgeous and looks so cute. Bf & niques- my boy also wakes up at 6am but he is very well-behaved. He just sits there and play with his toys.
  23. Hi guys, I haven't been updating for awhile due to lots of assignments and this will be a short one as well. I have finally got my internet going stupid internet service provider wasted so much of my time. Love everyone's pup! Lauren - Maggie is just so cute. I love goldens so much! Lovemesideways - Riddick is such a cute name! BF - Hope that thing on Zoe recovers soon! Niques and Wuffles - I wake up at 6am in the morning as well! I used to wake up in the afternoon but I have changed so much after Oreo came into our life. Here is Oreo!
  24. Susan - my puppy is the same as yours. He only goes toilet in 1.5 hour after his meal. Lauren - don't worry so much. I think the training guides are just generalizing. They design the training and call it "errorless" because it has the least chance of the puppy causing accident at home by taking them out on every opportunity. I tried giving a high-pitched yelp but as a man, I think I got pretty deep voice. But he is biting softer so that's all good. I have to give him more time because the breeder told me that Oreo is a rough boy. I cleaned up my backyard to create more spaces for him to run in and made it more secure. I also went to Bunnigs to buy some grass seedlings to plant so that it would cleaner for him to play outside. I had been walking Oreo on the driveway and he has now walked quite well. He enjoy the outside surroundings and by walking, his nails are not as sharp and that is good for playing with him. Nic
  25. Short update on Oreo. He is lovely but biting still continues. His bite is getting softer so I guess he is still learning. But he goes for my girlfriend whenever he sees her. Haha trying to get him not to by not playing with him. His UTI has cleared so that is all good. We trained him these few days on lead. He performs so well. We get him to move forward by luring with food and he gets rewarded for it. Lauren - you can try luring with food. But sometimes he just walks in front of me so I have to watch out and not kick him. Trying to get him to walk on my left. I walk him on the drive way so he could not catch other dog's diseases. Now he needs less food lure and he will walk nicely but he still gets distracted very easily by things that move(eg car and flying leaves). He sometimes know how to "leave" so training him more will get there. We bring him everywhere so he could have more socialization. BF - Oreo is not scared of anything as well. He tried going for a Golden Retriever tail in puppy school. Lol. Luckily I managed not to let him take a bite. Nic
