  1. Thanks. I was just worried because this is a weird situation. I thought they lose a tooth before growing a new one. He lost the other teeth before growing new ones.
  2. Hi guys my puppy started teething a few days ago. Today, we found that he have 2 adult teeth growing behind his teeth. Should I be concern with this? I attached a picture below.

  4. Oreo knows how to: 1) Sit 2) Drop 3) Shake 4) Hand (the other paw for shake) 5) Come 6) Wait 7) In (for going into crate) 8) Let's go (for moving on during walk) 9) Leave (don't touch a particular thing) 10) Spin 11) Turn (other direction) 12) Up (for putting his paws on my thigh when I am on a chair) 13) Off (when I don't want him to put his paws on anyone) 14) Heel (go by my back to my left side) (working on this 1) 15) Go get something... eg ball (which is fetch basically) 16) Take (holding something with his mouth) 17) Give (let go of something he is holding) 18) Go to Mummy (looks for my gf) 19) Uhhhmmmm... (when he does something wrong) 20) Friend (asking him to put his paw on somebody's leg) (we made this up) Most of these are basic obedience we learn from pre-school. I am going to take him to junior manners class soon. I want him to walk nicely beside me. ETA: I just realize he knows so much things.
  5. I got a Border Collie puppy and he is very smart. He usually learns a new trick in 1-2 training session (have to train in many places). You have to fade the lure eventually. If you are using a food lure, 3 times maximum. For example: 1) If you are teaching "sit", you lure him/her into the "sit" position and say "yes" and reward him/her for that. 2) After 3 instances, PRETEND to have food in your hand and lure him into the "sit" position. Say "yes" when he "sit" and show him/her that you don't have food in that hand. Then reward him with food using the other hand. 3) After that, show him that your hand doesn't hold any food and use the hand signal to make him/her to "sit". Say "yes" when he/she "sit" and reward him. He will learn that the hand signal means to "sit". 4) Always release him after a trick by saying "ok!" or anything you want. Then you will get a reliable "stay" in the future. I found this out after I thought him basic obedience so he doesn't have a reliable "stay" now. This works well on my puppy and hope this helps you.
  6. My puppy took a while to learn to settle in his crate, slightly more than 1 week. My puppy is not really a barker so i am not sure how to help you on this. Maybe let her sleep beside you for a few days before putting her in the laundry? She just left her littermates to an unfamiliar surroundings and leaving her in the laundry all alone maybe scary for her. If you can't have her in your bedroom, maybe give her a ticking clock in her bed? I heard that helps to put them to sleep.
  7. When you train your puppy to sit, drop etc. , always release him by saying "ok" and break him from the position. This way, he will learn that he is suppose to sit until you release him. You will have a reliable "stay" in the future. I did not know about this so I didn't do it and now my puppy has a hard time learning to stay in one position. Another advice is crate training is the best! Oreo drop another tooth today while he was chewing raw hide and we managed to find the tooth and kept it. He also got 2 of his front teeth back! I am going to take picture and post it up later on!
  8. He contracted UTI before he came to me. His wee was orange in colour that time. Therefore I always look at the wee when he does it and its does not appear like before. He also doesn't appear to be in pain when wee-ing. Maybe I will bring to wee every 1.5 hour and see how it goes. Maybe I didnt just catch his signal well. I will uipdate after 2 days and if he still continue to be like that, I will bring him to the vet to make sure he is alright. He is entire and I am going to desex him.
  9. Oreo is slightly older than 4 months old and he knows to go outside for toilet. I usually bring him out for toilet every 2 hours and I make sure he peed outside before he is let in. But these few days, he has been running around and peeing everywhere in the house. I will use tissue to make it dry and then spray Urine Off to clear the smell. No particular spot in the house therefore I think he is not attracted to the wee smell on a particular spot. For example, just now I brought him out at 1.30am for wee and he came back in. He then ran around the house (he is a BC so I suppose it is usual) then at 2.00am, he suddenly just wee again (quite a lot as well). We just found another wee on his bed in the living room. Is he marking his territory? If not, what could be the issue? Maybe he is too tired that he could not control his bladder? PS: I bring him for walk (2x30mins walk each day), I train him (an hour a day) and play with him(few hours). I also give him a lot of toys to play with and things to chew as well. So I suppose he received enough mental and physical stimulation. Thanks in advance.
  10. I talked to someone from guide dogs vic about this a while back and she said that the lab/GR was in favour because of their even temperament and that it only works for a first generation cross from pure bred parents. I have yet to see an obviously cross bred guide dog - my auntie used to be heavily involved in Guide Dogs NSW. She used to foster puppies. I see Guide Dogs occasionally and they always look like purebred Labs or GR. It's fairly obvious generally if it's a cross. Why would the cross have a more even temperament than a pure lab or GR both of which are renowned for having excellent temperaments? Just because a lecturer or vet from a respected university says something does not mean it's true There is absolutely NO evidence that cross-breeds are healthier because nobody has actually done any research on this matter (to my knowledge). Diseases in Purebreds are clearly documented however nobody has a database of cross-breds with health information this is why the myth started. The number of crossbreds I know of who have health problems is larger that the number of purebreds I know of who have health problems. The myth of hybrid vigour is strong however not really valid. Breeding 2 unhealthy/poorly bred animals together whether from the same breed or different breeds doesn't automatically create a magical super healthy puppy. They are still the same species so they aren't hybrids anyway. The whole purebreds are more expensive is completely untrue. Pet store cross-breds are routinely sold for $1500 to $3000 dollars whilst a purebred Maltese from a reputable breeder may cost $900-$1200 dollars. Most purebred puppies are less expensive that pet store animals because reputable breeders aren't trying to make a profit whilst pet stores are. I did not said it was true. I was quoting what the lecturer said. Besides, I also think that cross-breds are unpredictable.
  11. I have a cousin who is currently studying vet science in a very reputable university. Their lecturer actually said that MOST cross-breeds are healthier than pure breeds. And the lecturer also said that is why Guide Dogs are usually Lab/GR cross. Then I asked my cousin whether they have data to prove it or not but my cousin said he is not sure about this. From my point of view about this health issue is that: they probably won't know about generic health issues regarding a cross-breed(no past examples) so they assume that cross-breeds are "healthier". ETA: They also assume that cross-breeding will lead to getting all the desired characteristics (EG non-shedding coats). I also ask my cousin what are the chances of getting more of the undesired characteristics and he told me "not high". I don't think cross-breeding will lead to getting desired characteristics because like humans, we are born the way we are, we don't have a choice.
  12. Bailey is so cute! Love the zoomie picture. When Oreo run, he always move his ears backwards so le looks like a mouse when he run
  13. Hi Lambo, I have a 4 months old BC pup here and to tell you the truth, its hard raising him. Now, I have worked out how much physical and mental stimulation my boy need. He needs 2 x 30mins of walk, 1 hour of training and 1 hour of play time with me(he plays on his own which I didn't include in this time) each day. He spends the rest of the time playing with his Kong or Chew toys. There was once I left him at home for 5 hours because of something important and I came home to total disaster. I left him in the kitchen with his toys and water. The leg of my dining chair chewed, he pulled out the puppy food from the pantry and had a feast (he found a way to open the pantry door), and the kitchen was in a mess. He don't usually bark but he will bark if he has not received enough mental stimulation and I leave him alone. He pulled down the pet tent I bought for him in 1 week. After that, once I put him in, he will pull the pet tent down and escape (he will look at me with the "I'm so clever" look ). If you work long hours, BC might not be for you. But, there is always the good side to everything. He learns rules and new tricks really fast (usually within 3-4 10mins training session), my boy is so beautiful! (I am biased ) and he is friendly to everyone and dog(so far, there is no one that he dislikes). Hope you get a great breed choice!
  14. I already claimed my free 3kg pack a while back. And also, I went to the vet and they give me a voucher which entitles me to 50% discount on a 3kg Eukanuba puppy food. I am going to keep mine on large breed then because my boy is HYPER-active.
  15. Borderfan and Clastic - I am very confused on which would be better for Oreo. I was told that Border Collies is closer to large breed and they are hyper-active so large breed puppy food will be good for BCs' bones. But technically speaking, BCs are medium breed dogs. ARGH! Emery - your girl is looking cute all curled up. aussielove - Oreo NEVER sleeps on his bed. He sleeps everywhere other than his bed. Its weird because its now winter and he still prefers to sleep on tiles. Wondering what will he do when summer comes!
  16. Clastic - Mars is beautiful. He got the innocent look I was wondering what breed size puppy food are you feeding Mars and Pepper? I am feeding Oreo Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy food.
  17. Hi guys, thanks for the recommendations and opinions. I just contacted another vet close to me at Glen Waverley. They are charging ~$210 for desexing a male puppy under 12 months of age. No other packages, just the basic package including GA and pain relief etc. It still seems very costly to me. I will call the RSPCA and ask about the price tommorow.
  18. Clastic - You seem to have a preference for two colours plus white for your BCs. There are different shades of brown on Pepper. They are both lovely. How are you dealing with them? Lindainfa - Love the first pic. She is so cute.
  19. quickbrownfox - Our breeder shows pictures on her website and we get to choose. I was the last so I didn't get to choose. My first choice was another boy and Oreo was my second choice. I got Oreo and I was happy. She told me Oreo's temperaments and I was happy with it (we loved naughty dogs). The next thing I knew was Oreo was on the plane here! borderfan - thats a lot of toys for a puppy! Maybe give him 6 toys first and then slowly give him the rest? He will feel happier if he sees new toys all the time. I am different from you. I buy LOTS of treats for Oreo. I have to go to the pet shop (no live animals other than fish sold) every other day. Started teaching Oreo how to "heel" since yesterday and walk on my left beside me. He sort of know heel means going to my left from behind. It went alright only because Oreo is still easily distracted. I am happy as long as he walk on my left and don't pull on the leash.
  20. Borderfan - 2 more weeks to go. When it is closer, you won't be able to sleep due to the excitement! Not getting Oreo a friend.....YET! Maybe after I graduate and get a full-time job. My gf is fond of West Highland Terrier and Yorkshire Terrier. I am leaning towards Siberian Huski or Sheltie. I am just afraid that Oreo will be too boisterous for dogs that are too small. Verdant - Bjorn sounds really nice. The name comes naturally when they are here. Don't stress too much. brownfox - Grats on your new puppy. Will you get to pick first? aussielover - Mindy is lovely! I love black-coloured dogs! LOL Labrador and food. You can't seperate them
  21. Verdant - Your boy is so cute~ Still so fluffy Borderfan - My gf thinks your BC pup is cute. On the picture with his littermates, his tail curls up. I have never seen Oreo's tail like that before. Its cute~
  22. Snowball: Maybe your goldie was trying to attract your attention? After she got your attention, you chased after her so it turned into a game. Usually I just play with my boy's toys making happy sounds and ignoring him totally. When he comes to me, I will offer him his toy I was playing and maybe a treat for letting go of the thing I don't want him to chew on. Tilly: How about Eucalyptus Oil Spray? The rest did not work but this worked wonder on my boy. Or give him some alternative to chew.
  23. My boy's breeder recommend marrow bone as well. Maybe I will try that as well. Not sure where can I find a sheep horn
  24. I got something similar to the Nylabones but Oreo won't chew it. He will just leave it lying about. Oreo don't touch carrot and brocoli. Maybe I will try pig, sheep or venison ears. But aren't they very fatty?
  25. Thanks for the recommendations. I tried carrot before. He would just play with it by biting pieces off but won't eat it. My puppy is a 4 months old BC and about 10kg in weight.
