  1. Where did the Newfoundland originate? Where did the Labrador originate?
  2. I agree regarding regulation of breeders can be a bit much. That's why, in section "f", I plan to put forward plans to reduce shelter euthanasia by actually directing legislation towards shelters. I will argue: Hayden's Law - which requires animals to be held in shelters for longer periods for reclaims, and requires shelters to be open at 'non-work' hours to allow reclaims. Oreo's Law - that any animal that has a rescue group or home to go to cannot be euthanised. requiring shelters to list all impounded animals (surrendered and strays) onto a central database so that people who have lost their dogs are more likely to be reunited.
  3. I am just wondering what people are planning to include in their submissions? I'm in the process of writing my submission and I'm open to ideas. :)
  4. I use the metal bowls that hang on the side of a crate. Sometimes I can clip this on to the top of the whelping box, too. EDITED to attach this picture.
  5. Do you want the puppies to toilet on concrete long-term? I would be inclined to put down whatever substrate you want the puppies to develop a surface preference for.
  6. Just stats for PIAA would be good if they existed.
  7. Despite quite a bit of Googling, I can't precisely answer the question: How many puppies are sold in pet shops each year? Any help appreciated.
  8. Can anyone tell me how many A N K C registered dogs there are in Australia? Can anyone tell me how many A N K C registered puppies are bred each year in Australia? Thanks in advance.
  9. This was interesting and funny. :) http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/guard-dogs-more-friendly-furious-put-test-video-211754888.html Please go to the link and watch the video! Well worth it. The little staffy doing tricks for the 'intruder' is pretty funny.
  10. Hi Willow, I've never had a consult with her, but attended a seminar by her several years ago, and was very impressed with her knowledge. :)
  11. So to become a CFCN (that receive animals directly from the public, i.e. surrendered), one must: *have foster carers, and *comply with council ? Is that all?
  12. So is there anything a person has to do, besides following council guidelines, to become a CFCN? Thanks so much for responses!
  13. Oh, Steve, I just read your answer again. You said that foster carers CAN take on animals directly surrendered to them. That's what I was getting at. Cool. How about pounds that don't have foster carers? They are not able to surrender animals on to CFCN unless there is an agreement in place? Can a pound/shelter surrender an animal themselves to a CFCN?
  14. Thanks heaps for this Steve Can you please explain the right side of this diagram? It seems to indicate differently. It is taken from the DPI website. http://m.dpi.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/image/0008/139544/flowchart.jpg
  15. Is there no one in Victoria that runs a private rescue that can confirm this?
  16. I have a quick couple of queries regarding Community Foster Care Networks as specified in Victorian legislation, Firstly, can CFCN take animals directly from the public? (Private surrenders.) Then, what is the process to be a CFCN? Thanks in advance for your help.
  17. Here's a fact sheet on 'vegan pets', but also includes 'more ethical choices' (that aren't vegan or veg): http://companionanimalwelfaresociety.org.au/fact-sheets/vegan-pets-feeding-pets-on-a-vegan-or-ethical-diet/
  18. Do you want some more RSPCA articles, highlighting the organisations disservice in regard to dogs and cats? RSPCA cops serve over two dead dogs http://www.southcoastregister.com.au/story/572739/rspca-cops-a-serve-over-two-dead-dogs/ Is RSPCA NSW's 'Drives for Lives' killing pets? http://www.savingpets.com.au/2012/11/is-rspca-nsws-drives-for-lives-killing-pets/ RSPCA collections rile local rescue group RSPCA NSW - working with rescue groups or not??? http://deathrowpets.wordpress.com/2012/10/09/rspca-nsw-working-with-rescue-groups-or-not/ The craft of spin (re: RSPCA NSW) http://www.savingpets.com.au/2012/10/the-craft-of-spin/ The RSPCA & puppy farmers get cozy http://www.savingpets.com.au/2012/03/the-rspca-puppy-farmers-get-cozy/ And on other animal welfare: Consumers duped by RSPCA, farmers claim http://www.smh.com.au/environment/animals/consumers-duped-by-rspca-farmers-claim-20120108-1pq77.html
  19. As a breeder, I plan way way way ahead. It doesn't always go as plan, but there's so many plan Bs that it's never a huge problem. :p
  20. oneteaspoon - where abouts in Vic are you (approximately)? Forum members may know some small, local shelters that you may be able to assist. These shelters often need help in terms of transport (to/from vet, to/from other shelters), too, so you may be able to help in a number of ways.
  21. Does the ink from the pen every leak through to the other side?
  22. Thanks, Kadbury. :) I don't necessarily want mine on display (yet?), I just want them organised... enough... off of display.
  23. Right now I have the majority of my ribbons in a shoe box. It's starting to get confusing which ribbons belong to which dog! How do you organise your ribbons and keep track of who they belong to?
