  1. I got mine in Target. Im not sure how long it actually is but it came with an extension piece and you could buy additional extension pieces. It was about $70 i think but it works great. Its nice and solid too and high and the gate part is easy to use (you push 2 buttons to open so no chance in the dog working out how to open it!).
  2. Aw she threw up once aswell. I didn't notice until i got home. We just had puppy school and all the treats she had were on the car floor. Gross - but i did notice that they were still full size so it shows she doesn't chew her food!
  3. Excellent, thanks for the replies! Will find some gingernut biscuit - do you get them from supermarkets? Where do you get the tablets from. Luckily she eats pretty much so thats one good thing! I bought something that goes in the back seat and hooks up to the front seat head rests so the dog can't jump into the front. i think it might make her panic more. she just wants to get close to me all the time. Once she is, she is quiet as anything! I might try to find some bed or something to stick on the back seat for her to sit in and feel 'safe and secure'. thanks
  4. Thanks i will try number three. She is far too big for a crate and my car is far too small to get a crate in! I wondered if it was car sickness. All the places we have gone to are 'fun places'. I will try to take her on short trips, even around the block! thanks.
  5. I am having a bit of trouble with my 16 week old pup when i take her in the car. When we walk up the car she pulls on her lead and tries to run backwards or get out of her harness. I usually have to pick her up and put her in. I have a dog seat belt restraint that clips into the seat belt clip and clips into her harness but its a bit too long. So she manages to crawl forward a bit so she is sitting in between the front seats and paws near the handbrake!. She is still clipped in. We tried to tie a knot in it to make it shorter (its already at the shortest length) but she just pulled and pulled and it came out of the seatbelt clip. On the way home once she just sat there in the middle of the backseat, still as anything, panting but looking like she's about to fall over. I dont know if she ate something bad or if she was feeling sick from the motion. She slept the rest of the day from 1pm. What are some good ways to make her going in the car a positive thing? Where she will eventually just hop in by herself to the back seat? When we have gone in the car (couple of times a week) its either to puppy school or friends houses. So nothing negative. If its just me and her, she just wants to sit on my lap. If someone else is driving she'll sit on my lap or next to me and fall asleep. Thanks for any help!
  6. Aww! After reading that, im thinking i better get on to training mine (whos the same age!) She has just mastered 'sit'. She does fetch, but hasn't learnt to drop the item for me to throw it again! She can be pretty cluey - we've set up a gate to stop her getting to the rest of the house and she works it out every single time. She's off to puppy school soon so i am hoping i will learn stuff to so i can teach her. Toilet training is going ok - shes had a few accidents in the house but mainly due to us not taking her out quick enough after a drink or shes excited someone has came home and just cant contain herself! But she hated her crate and cried for ages in there. Instead she goes in the laundry between 10 and 11 and is quite until 6 or 7 - and no messes either. Soon as we put her in there she doesn't even make a sound, not even a cry.
  7. Hahaha! Yeah she is a cutie! she's growing so much. My last dog was a Jack Russell (long haired? never seen another one!) so this is a pretty big leap from that to her! She is happy ALL the time! She's this bouncing ball of energy! (oh and rips anything to shreds!) You got lucky with Elbie - he is adorable!! Thanks. She is sitting really good now. Its so cute watching her. I'll teach her, stop, stay, come and down and maybe roll over in time! She's pretty cluey already (we put a gate up to stop her getting into the rest of the house, we've tried 3 different ways, but each time she figures out how to move it. Sneaky bugger! think we have to get a baby gate!). she starts puppy school soon! Hows elbie going with his?
  8. I was given two options from my vet. One was an injection (could be $75 but it depends on the dogs weight). This would be done at 12 weeks, and another at 6 months and then the next wont be for a year. Or there is a monthly tablet (could be $30 she said). Apparently neither of those included all treatments. I left with a bit of information that didn't make a lot of sense (i also was holding a hyper puppy! I may ring them and get it with out the distraction) , all i know is she will have to have it when she is 12 weeks old. Just wondering what treatments you use or what you find best? Is there a good treatment that covers all (the main ones)? I want a method that will work but also isn't highly expensive either. with our old dog (this was years ago) i think she had a tablet but it was a nightmare to get her to eat them (fussy thing!) and a squirt of something to the back of her neck. My new puppy appears to eat anything so tablets shouldn't be as hard! any advice, welcomed. thanks.
  9. I found the RSPCA shop online to be really good - espically in terms of price compared to the same items in shops! http://www.worldforpets.com.au They have hundreds, a few of those hide away bee's/squirrels - not sure if there are any 'mind' or 'thinking' game toys on there. One good thing with them is that it seems that shipping is one standard price. I had 1 item in my cart and shipping wa $10 (its from QLD i think) and in the end i had about 6 items and still only $10! they have these rubber balls for 7.95 - http://www.worldforpets.com.au/products/pr...ail.asp?ID=1551 or sponge balls from 4.95 http://www.worldforpets.com.au/products/pr...ail.asp?ID=2017 I ordered something from another shop and the shipping was more than the actual item!!
  10. A few people arn't too sure on the name 'ava'. they want me to change it! She's slowly getting the hang of 'sit' now - espically around dinner time! Last night i was preparing it and she sat right in the middle of the kitchen watching my every move. I'll send you a message with some photos!
  11. Hey GoldenGirl85, Yeah, parents/family. And she is my first puppy/dog. We got a JRT when i was 7 or 8 (dont remember her when she was a pup), and while she had a great life, spoilt like hell, she could also be snappy because there we no boundaries for her. Sometimes they didn't have the patience with her and was never properly trained unfortunatly, so im trying this time to do things right! I might have to make a list of do's and donts for them! Not just for parents but also for other people who may look after her. How much does Lexi weigh? I have been feeding her supercoat, but have been looking at the other brands such as Royal Canin. Id rather go middle/top range.
  12. Thats what i was thinking - they reccomended this for a reason! I got a free Eukanbua (?) puppy book and even in there it says that tin food is 80% water and kibble is about 10%. Its clear whats better for them, but i still couldn't get it through! I dont mind having a few tins of food as back up just incase, but i dont like it. I opened one up and it was a paste that smelt like cat food. On the feeding plan it also suggests a few vegetables and fruits, i'd probably be better to add those to the buscuits than tin food! Our old dog never got tin food (she would never eat it), so we never fed it to her.
  13. Thanks, Koalathebear well, maybe just a bit! And the suggestion of returning her shocked me. She is in a good, loving home. I am just trying to train her differently to our last dog who had a great and spoilt life but didn't get much training as i was a kid and parents worked. We had her for 14 years and people just need to adjust to having a dog again (its been 3 years) and not do the same bad habbits with did with the last dog. I am trying to put my foot down so to speak with people - everyone else has their own ideas they want to do - such as taking her out to the beach. I've been strict in not letting her go out in public, only back yard (wont let her out the front until she's had all her vacinations). She is getting the hang of the command 'sit' but i will do it in a different tone of voice than someone else will (they will be much louder/harsher). I think once the basic commands are in, it should be fine, but its not helping when i try to teach her something and people butt in while im doing it! Yeah, with obedience i plan on going alone with her. thanks.
  14. Thanks. I'll make it clear to them. Oh, and she isn't being slapped. Its a gentle tap - but even that i dont want them to do. Ive made it clear i dont want them doing that, so hopefully it got through
  15. She's 9 weeks old Goldee. She's far too young for any walk longer than a few minutes. If she's over exercised you can end up with big issues from a skeletal perspective. I'd be issuing an edict = you do NOT walk my pup without me!! Seriously, if you cannot get your parents to respect your wishes for this pup, I highly recommend you return her. She will not profit from the current situation and you only get one chance to raise her right. What sort of training/corrections do you think she'll get on walks from the family member who thinks slapping her face is OK? Oh no i dont mean a long walk, just take her down there (not let her walk there). But even then i dont plan on doing that for at least another 3-4 weeks. No, there is no need to return her. They are doing what they think is best - even tho i dont and she is my dog so ultimatly i decide. So i'll have to be very clear with them of what i want. I will be moving out in a year.
  16. Oh no no i have been very strict that she is not allowed out what so ever until she is vacinated and even then i am waiting a few weeks to be safe!
  17. Yep it was. Dont you need to cook the mince? She gets the mince and dry biscuits (supercoat) mixed together and sometimes with vegetables etc (ones she can have)
  18. and this is why you go to an obedience club- or get a trainer to help you YOU are the human- the one in charge- it is your responsibilty to TEACH her how walk comfortably on a leash & collar.. she won't automatically do it..and ,believe me, it can be done on a flat collar ... with you being educated- all sorts of things are possible!! She is such a baby yet- she has lots to learn from you. THIS LINKmay get you thinking as to what is needed now, and what can be done ;) The trick is to get information from different sources-- and after you learn lots, and beging to understand your pup- then you can use what works best for your pup. Pup/dog training is NOT "one size fits all" ! Thanks! I getting her in the next available puppy school class and hope to take her to obidence classes too. People are eager to take her out for walks to the beach etc, but she'll try to get out of her lead (at least until i know how to control/train and teach her it!) which will just take time. I wonder if i am better of waiting until i have a bit of control and teach her some things before! So at least i know i can control her on the lead.
  19. Yeah its mainly just now, about her trying to get out of her collar while on a lead because she is so excited. When she is trained i think she'll be fine. She's pretty cluey now. She's just very playful.
  20. Thanks. thats what i want, i'll teach her, they can reinforce it. But it very annoying when im siting there, in a quite area with her trying to teach her and then they just come up and start yelling out 'sit' and waving their finger in her face! They are the ones i am going to have to say 'no' to! I was thinking of using a harness on her so if she pulls she isn't strangling herself as she does with her normal collar. She's SO excited to go explore and doesn't come when she's called yet so i fear her getting loose, so i thought a harness might be better and can teach her to walk, not pull etc etc. I have heard of one called a Gentle Leader whihc looks similar to a headcollar but apparently is 'nicer' for the dog. Ive was told to get one now which is just silly! She barely has a nose for it to sit properly on!!
  21. She is 9 weeks old? She won't be teething until around 5 months of age ;) re: the feeding. Canned food is mostly water . waste of money, and not much nutrition. Whose dog is she? Why are 'the other people' feeding her??? Don't you live there, or what? perhpas see that She gets a good breakfast - (NOT cereals)...meat/puppy kibble. a meaty bone to chew on/play with during the day ..a meal when you get home...and a light snack for supper. If 'the others' really want to feed her.. why don't YOU prepare a meal for her and leave in the fridge? That way she is getting what you want to feed her... and they think they are doing their bit. She will benefit from bones every day chicken wings/turkey necks... all sorts . I don't like chicken necks much for anything bigger than cavs.. I worry about them getting stuck in the oesophagus but that's just me . personally I don't understand why they are wanting to feed her at all....... Really? Oh thats what i was told because she was chewing/biting so much. Must just be that stage then. Yeah i read that about tin dog food (mostly water). Its alright for a quick fix, but it looks HORRIBLE! she's my dog. I do live there but am at work and they are home most of the time. I have planned to get her meat (mince) all packaged out into the right quantities so all they have to do is cook it for lunch. Thats the only meal they need to heat up! But they keep pushing the tin dog food (because its 'easier'). It doesn't take long to cook some mince! Yeah we got chicken necks and she loved them, and then they were at the shops they bought some but small ones! i worry about her choking on them!
  22. Yeah, i will be taking her to puppy school, see how she goes. Considered private lessons after that. She seems to be a clever thing but gets distracted easily! But she's onky 9weeks, cant expect too much yet! Yep, family (parents). I am the owner, i paid for her. I wanted her. It took some serious convincing to even get her here. They really adore her - but wish they'd just let me decide on what to feed her and training. I try to teach her and then they just barge in speaking over me. There are 3 options i've found for puppy school. One through the vets (5 mins away), one at a dog obidence place (which will have further training options available but 20 mins away) - there is a big price diference too, and one is mon 6.30 or sat 12 noon. Its my choice but they seem to be annoyed that i am preferring the saturday one. Sometimes i dont get home till 5.45, i dont want to be or feel rushed, i want to be able to concentrate so she gets the most out of going to it! I decide on something and am told i should do something different - like i want a harness lead. Im told to get one of those ones that go over her nose (not a muzzle) or a choker chain. Again, no! Its just to get her trained properly on the lead, not to pull etc etc, when she's bigger i'll find somethign else. Ive told them not to smack her nose and i get 'oh im not doing it hard'. She is going to grow up to be a BIG dog, when she's that size she can do a lot more damage than just nipping at your feet.
  23. Oh thats good too hear! Its mainly just a tiny warm bit to go along with her biscuits but not every day. What type of bones would you recommend for a 9 week old puppy? (supervised of course!)
  24. I have a couple of questions about training a puppy and whats the best way to go/how many people should be in 'charge' of it Is it better to get private training lessons? I am going to be taking my pup to Puppy School in a few weeks hopefully and noticed they have other obidence type classes available as well as private lessons. Someone i know told me how they got private lessons and its well trained (the basics, sit, come, stay, no etc). Im not too sure how much they are at this point, but probably a few hundred. How many people should be in charge of 'training' her? i am getting a bit worried that we are confusing her with all this comands as they are coming from three different people. I will be trying to teach her to sit and have a few treats and then someone else comes up grabs some treats and sits next to me saying 'sit' as well. Poor thing. I just give up when it happens coz we are confusing her. I wish they would butt out! I read in a book about dog/puppy training that its bad to smack them on the nose if they bite or jump up. One person constantly does this, holds her face and smacks her nose when she does something wrong. I've told them not to do it but they still do. I am going to get a harness lead to take her out for walks, and now they think they are going to take her out aswell. I dont mind them helping, but as soon as she needs to go outside in the middle of the night or whatever its 'she's your dog'. Hopefully in a year we both wont be living there but she needs to be used to me and my commands to her. Thanks for any help!
