  1. thanks. it does. Shes quietened down now, still a few whimpers. i put a ticking clock near her crate - heard the sound helps. i wonder if i need to bring the crate in my room, at the moment its in the family room, which is next to mine, but she still isn't close. i was so surprised she slept from say 11.15 to 6.30am on her first night. i want her to be able to hop in there her self eventually - does your's go in by himself?
  2. How did you go about crate training your pup? How do you get them used to going in there? This is only the 2nd night ive had her, but i put her in there and she is crying so much. Its awful to hear and hard not to want to just go pick her up. Her first night she whimpered for about 10 mins and then quite. she went to bed at 11pm and didn't wake up once during the night, got up at 6.30. no messes in her crate either. Tonight she's been crying/whimpering for a good 20/30 minutes. Ive taken her outside and she did another wee. She did her other toilets before too. We haven't had any accidents yet. Strangely enough, she will go to the very back of the garden in the plants and dirt to do her number 2 business. (nobody walks up there its covered in plants and trees and rocks). I know its only been 2 days but i dont want the crate to have a negative affect on her. I want to go about it the right way to get her in there at night, coz right now she doesn't like it.
  3. Is tin dog food good or bad? I tried some 'My Dog' tin food and she loved it - but i am just wondering if its 'safe' and still healthy for them - even tho its made for dogs. Is there a better brand or is it more about personal choice? Any advice helpful! thank you
  4. Oooh! Im looking for a new DSLR too and was thinking of the 550D...how does it seem so far? I saw a similar lense - i think it might be 18-270 tamron in harvey norman - how is the one you got? Good zoom?
  5. thanks! i do remember our old dog (JRT) was amused with toilet rolls. She was never one for chasing balls or fetching....however she went bananas over a slipper - stuck her head in it, bum up and pushed it around the house, or shook it so hard im suprised she didn't knock her self out!
  6. Thanks. I did know not to give her any cooked bones as they may splinter. I'll keep it in mind and may have to pop to the butchers to see if they have any!
  7. A chicken neck is just that! the neck cut off a chicken body ,and minus the head ;)They are all cleaned... kinda look like bony sausages . ;)If you buy some ... store them in teh freezer, so they stay fresh. You can feed them frozen- it encourages chewing, and keeps pup busy longer Ohh thanks! I'd never even heard of feeding a dog them until the breeder said they do! so they just eat it raw? all of it? bones and all?
  8. Thanks! I will have to see how supercoat goes. With her long coat when she gets older i want it to be nice!! I get her on Thursday!!! Haven't decided on a name yet, have a few in mind but waiting to see what little personality she has!
  9. Thanks! Yep i bought a small pack of supercoat so she's on the same brand for a bit and then have a look what else is there. I got supercoat from PetStock, and then i saw in places like Big W and Kmart were even cheaper - it sounds good, but not so if it has the puppy pooping everywhere! . They had Royal Canin and many others at PetStock. Since she's a Golden Retriever, i want her coat looking nice. Will give it a test run and see how it goes. Im going to avoid Tin dog food tho. the other thing the breeder does feed them chicken necks. Right now, im a bit grossed out by that. Ive been told that its possible to by them in coles. Does the pup eat the whole thing? what is it exactly?!
  10. Thanks. I've gone with Supercoat because its what it was eating before at the breeders. Im not really sure of the difference between all the brands Funny you say that, i heard the other day that some people give their dog weetbix for breakfast.
  11. I have bought a small packet of Supercoat puppy biscuits for my new puppy arriving in a few days, but have recently read/heard a few bad things about it. I got a small one to start with just in case and then will get a big one. has any one had any experience with this brand? Is it good? Is there much difference between brands? i've also heard to avoid Pedigree. We have a PetStock near by and theres probably at least 5 or more different brands, some quite expensive, it can make choosing difficult.
  12. omg, thats horrible. Thanks for that, i'll keep that in mind.
  13. i was told that too. Some vets just push selling their products. I thought it was odd that i dont bring the pup the first time. Its only 5 weeks for an hour, and i've lost an hour already, what can they learn in that! I wondered if its more for socializing the pup instead and that only.
  14. Thanks! what pup are you getting? Only a few days now and can't wait! Ohhh, woops, i do have a kong! A puppy one so it'll only be good for a while i guess. Ive ordered a few things from World for Pets so hopefully they'll be good! But if the toys dont keep her entertained i might look into those ones you listed! Im not sure if she will be easy going and relaxed pup or just a ball of energy and getting into anything she can!
  15. I asked if they did it and they said they did for either 4 or 5 weeks (can't remember) but the first week you dont bring your pup. A dog obedience place was recommended to me too, which is probably an extra 20 min drive, but they have SO much more. Their puppy school goes for an extra 2 weeks, for the same price, but you can do obedience classes/training at all different levels. Plus they operate on a Saturday morning. The vets only do it mondays at 6.30. I think getting home from work, and then rushing up there wont be good. I want her to learn from it and its no good if im tired!!
  16. Awesome, thanks. Will look into some teddies for her! Oh the tennis balls are more for her to chase, throw etc, not really to chew on, even if they are kept until she's older. Ive seen big plush teddies in pet stores like Petstock (they just sell supplies, not pets), but they are rather expensive!!
  17. Thanks. I do intend to take it to puppy school! The vet does offer it. Yeah, its only about 5 mins away so im hoping they are still good. Haven't been there since 07. They had a lady vet who was very good.
  18. Thanks!! Will try that. I am going to take her out for drives and theres so many places to take her to (beaches, parks etc) so want her to be comfortable in the car. Yep, our Jack Russell ( she was long haired, ive never found another one!) hated going there. We didn't really take her out in the car so any time she went in the car, it was to the vets and she soon clicked on to that! Plus, when she was about 5 or 6 the vet was rather rough with her and put something up her butt and she yelled out like she was being murdered. It was horrible to hear. After that we switched to a female vet, she was petrified of him! BUt in her last year it didn't bother her, but i think that was due to the fact she probably didn't realise where she was
  19. Thanks! I was going to get a teddy for her but was told it was a silly! My old dog was a JRT too!
  20. My puppy arrives in a few days and i've made an appointment with our vet to get her in a few days after she gets here. for a general check. Are there any things i should specifically ask the vet? or things i should be aware of? I'll get the vaccination card in the post a few days after so i'll then know when to get her in for those. What are some ways to make the visits a 'positive' experience for the the pup so they aren't scared in going there? Our last dog hated the vets and being in the car so it was a nightmare getting her there. Thanks.
  21. My golden retriever pup arrives in just a few days!! Im too excited. Im getting told that she will chew everything in sight and what dog toys i have bought wont last and that i dont know what i am in for. I realize she is a pup and will chew on things! I have bought a few toys - some 'teething' toys per the label for puppies (it says it helps their teeth/gums), some tennis balls, rope toys, some fleecy rope toys (it says it helps clean their teeth) and a few others. Most i bought from the RSPCA. I know most of these arn't going to last long. When the time comes i'll upgrade to something bigger/longer lasting for her. Am i missing any items? Or are there any 'must haves' to get? I have a few things to tie me over for the first few weeks and then when i get her and get her settled in etc, i can get things that are better for her and her personality etc. thanks!
  22. Oh my! She is adorable! Im getting my first Golden Retriever pup in just a few days and can't wait to see her!! I'll be happy if its half as cute this one!
  23. Thanks. If the crate wont be used when its fully grown, is it still better to buy that size? ( i guess in a 'just in case' situation)
  24. Bugger! Is that fully grown that it was too small for him? i dont want it to be too small, its just a matter of finding a place to put it as when i measured it out it felt like it will be massive! maybe its better to be on the safe side. dont want her being all cramped up in there.
