  1. Yeah we give her carrots to munch on - but more so for something for her to chew on (she's teething). Im going to look at getting a bone for her. The breeder recommended, biscuits & puppy milk for breakfast, mince & biscuits for lunch and biscuits and chicken necks for dinner. The other people want to feed her with tin dog food because it is easier. I REALLY do not want her to become over weight (our last dog was a bit and she was too old to exercise to loose it). I tell them not to give her that but they do. Yet at night when its time to take her out for the toilet - its 'well its your dog you take her out'!
  2. Other people need to be given a kick up the bum. There is bugger all nutritional value in cereal.. .the milk's OK but its just mush that fills dogs up. Hahaha yes i agree! Its hard to get them to but out! When i think about it, its just oats, while it may fill her up, she needs something benefical for her too!
  3. Thanks! She's only tried a bit of porridge and seemed to like it (although right now it appears she'll eat anything). She may have eaten it because it was warm. We give her biscuits in the morning - sometimes moisitened, sometimes dry/hard and some puppy millk. Other people in the house always want to feed her this and that instead of sticking to the diet sheet i got from the breeder! They keep wanting to feed her on tin dog food too - the my dog one. They dont come in a puppy version, and my vet said they are fine but s long as its a puppy version.
  4. Ive heard of people feeding their dogs wheatbix or porridge (oats) for breakfast. Is this safe for the dog? I have a 9 week old pup, is it safe for her? Thanks!!
  5. Oh cool thank you! I have Photoshop elements which will do the same thing i think for those steps! I usually increase resolution to 300 but it still kept telling me it was too low! Will try.
  6. Ava's a lovely name - named after Ava Gardner? Elbie's going to puppy school. He attends puppy class with: - a gorgeous but grumpy bull terrier named Winston who is built like a block of wood and won't sit no matter what anyone tells him to do - a huge, boisterous six month old boxer puppy named Lloyd who can sit but not drop, does happy wees and begs for food shamelessly - a HUGE rhodesian ridgeback/rottweiler cross named Geoffrey who is beautiful - a terrified little cavalier king charles named Alfie who spends all of the playtime hiding between the legs of my OH - a schnauzer with anxiety issues and a very blingy collar He enjoys it a lot although he doesn't really play that much with the other puppies. The big ones chase him around and he evades them with ease. When the three biggies gang up on him they pin him to the ground easily. Most of the time he just runs around and hoovers up the treats that the others ignore. I think puppy classes are a good idea, though. He'll start formal obedience later this month though which is excellent - we're very excited about that because he's very keen to learn and so far we've been teaching him off youtube videos and our technique is probably really crap. Elbie had a cushion he used to fall off as well. That's why the pet basket's so ideal with its sides. I'd stick with your current bed for now until Ava gets too big for it/chews it to bits - then upgrade to a bigger bed. Not all dogs take to crates - Elbie doesn't like his outdoor kennel much. We put food and kongs in the back and he goes in there to get them and brings them outside to eat You'll have to start an Ava thread here so we can enjoy her progress! Haha, na not named after Ava Gardner, searching dog names/baby names and that was one that stood out! I wanted one that wasn't too common. I love the way you described all the puppies at the school! Its so cute how they all have their own little personalities. Im going to ring a few up soon - my vet does one at 5 weeks (first week you dont bring pup) for $100, but theres a dog Obidence School which does it for 4 weeks at $40. Plus they do all the other obidence training too. It'll be interesting to see how she goes with other pups. She hasn't been timid so far with anything, so hopefully she'll be fine. Na you seem to have trained him to do some good stuff in those videos! I think we would be able to train Ava, she seems clever but all she does is want to play, jump and bite! Those photos are just so cute. He looks so tiny! Yeah good idea, she seems to be chewing everything at the moment - including us!
  7. thanks. I dont have photoshop where i am right now but will check later. The camera it was taken with was a Canon 500D DSLR. The file size is 4.85MB. The 50x75 is in cm.
  8. I am shocked people actually give those excuses. Some people are idiots and selfish. I knew someone with a JRT. He never got any affection, shut out in a shed all day, the backgarden was just grass (no trees or anything). I guess he was about 8 or 9 years old and they gave him away. Just like that. They didn't want to 'deal with him' anymore. She didn't even care i dont think. He didn't even do anything wrong. He was well behaved! ( i lost touch with her and found out years later she gave him away. I would have tried to take him if i knew). She never felt any 'attachment' to her dog. I dont get it. I was heartbroken when my old dog died.

    Puppy Toys

My golden retriever loves her toys. I got a 'teething toy' in big w - its a pink thing with rope arms and legs - she carries it everywhere, tennis balls, rope toy. But she manages to find her own toys too - an empty plastic pot plant holder, an old plastic bowl that was outside (when its upside down she scratches it and scratches it and moves it around until she can get it in her mouth). Also got her a big pillow in Kmart - they were actually in the childrens section but they were only $5 and she loves playing with it coz its almost as big as she is but she can jump on it etc etc.
  10. I was going to get a photo printed out as a 50x75 photo at Snapfish.com.au. I upload my photo and it tells me i can't go that high as the resolution is too low. It says for a 50x75 the Minimum image resolution required = 1800x2700 My image is Width 4752 x height 3168 taken with a 15mp camera. I figured it would develop something that big. Does anyone know what needs to be done to a photo to make it able to be printed at that size? Thanks
  11. What a shame you're so far away! I'm sure our puppies would LOVE to play together Wouldn't they look so cute and lovable??? We bought the dog bed from Pet Barn. Alas, they don't seem to have a Pet Barn in South Australia but don't worry, I'm sure you can buy them in any pet store. It's called a Bona Fido Stay Dry Basket and comes in a bunch of sizes. We got the largest one we could find for Elbie - even though it's a bit big for him now, he's very comfy in it and curls up in the corners or sprawls. Sometimes he lounges back in the corner as if it's a fancy lounge suite Also, what's awesome about it is that so far it's chew-resistant We do tell him "no biting" if we catch him gnawing on the straps or sides but so far it's stood up to his teeth and claws very well. The cushion on the inside also clips in so he can't drag it out. He loves it because he uses his crate for sleeping in at night and if he's feeling a bit scared e.g. last night when I was using the electric mixer he ran to his crate - but otherwise, he likes the dog bed because we put it near our computers and he can hang out near us. He'll sleep in it and also just lie there playing with his chew toys for ages. Hope all is going well with your little puppy girl She looked so beautiful in the photos you shared in the puppy thread. They really would! Although i think she'd give Elbie a run for his money - (as in she's younger but VERY game!). It'll be interesting to see what she's like when i take her to puppy school. Did you take Elbie to one? Thanks! Those beds look pretty good. I've seen ones in PetStock that a material round, and the largest ones are SO expensive. We just have a dog bed from cheap as chips - its a good soft comfy one but she tends to roll off it and sleep half on it and half off it!. Thats adorable. Ava didn't like her crate. Barely used it since i bought it! It seemed like she felt 'caged in'. She LOVES the outdoors so maybe at the breeders she was kept outside in open areas, as oposed to being closed in a small space.
  12. I am looking at buying a new DSLR camera ( i have an old FujiS9500, looks like a DSLR but isn't one). I have used a Canon 500D and it was very good - some times it was a bit blury when i wanted to take 'action' shots of my dog running but i think it was more due to the settings i have it on. I have also seen the Canon 550D which has just been released which as 18mp compared to 15. Is there any real difference in that? Are they just larger file sizes? Could you get bigger prints (poster sized) photos developed with the 18mp more so than a 15mp? If any one has either of these cameras i'd be grateful to know how they are - the good/the bad. I saw a tamron 18-270mm lens in harvey norman, which sounded great, but after reading a review it seemed that it was a bit on the slow side, so i may stick with canon lenses. I dont know much about lenses but is there one that is REALLY fast? (mainly to take photos of a very playful puppy!) Thanks for any advice/help!
  13. He is so adorable - those ears and eyes are to die for! Where did you get that type of bed from (the black/red one - in the pictures and you tube clip?)
  14. Omg, that is the cutest thing ever!.
  15. haha, here we go! Im still deciding on a name. Have 2 in mind but cant choose what suits her better!
  16. Excellent will give it ago. Thanks. We tried the puppy versions of Pedigree and Optimum. She did not like them! Dont blame her really - they were like a paste. She gulps down 'My Dog' but they dont do a puppy version. Am going to try Natures Gift.
  17. I'll try that. She nips a lot but she thinks its a game. Yeah luckily she hasnt needed to much either. She goes outside. She's had a couple of accidents but more due to use not getting her outside quick enough after sleeping or a meal. I opened up her crate to use the full size of it (instead of dividing it in half) I'd read to halve it so they cant do any toilets in there. It didn't seem a lot of a room for her. Thankfully she had the whole space and didn't make a mess in it.
  18. Oh my, he is adorable!! i might have to try that sleeping arrangement, all she does is cry at night (horrible to hear).
  19. oh thanks, i probably should have done a search! Did any of it help yours?
  20. What is the best way to stop the nipping/biting and jumping up of a puppy? She's only just over 8 weeks so it may be to early to teach her. She is always so excited and wants to play and she grabs your hand, fingers, arm, feet and bites them. Her little teeth are like needles! She'll be sitting on the other side of the room or garden and if you move your feet or hands she'll come bounding up and punce on them. Very cute but also it hurts! We try to distract her with toys - which works for a bit and then soon as you move she's back at your feet. Or we say no but i dont think she's got the hang of that word yet. I'd rather try to stop it sooner than later.
  21. I took my new puppy (Golden Retriever) to the vets for a check up a few days after i got her. She was really good - infact she fell asleep during it!. I took the vacination card i got from the breeders and the vet told me they do it a different way. Information from the breeders was that the vacinations are due again at 12 and 18 weeks. The vet said they do a vacination thats one thats inclusive of all at 10 weeks and that is the final vacination. They said they only do it if they know when the pup is 10 weeks (can only be done at 10 weeks) and as they know when she was born they can do it. Just wanted to check if this is ok and the vet is giving me correct information!? Has anybody in SA had there vet do the same thing?
  22. My little one is the same! Its time for bed and all she wants to do is play! She is sleeping through out the evening from about 7.30 ish which is probably why. Last night she just wanted to run around outside - it was raining and she came in SO wet! She dug her first hole too and got covered in dirt! Only a couple of accidents inside for her, but that wasn't her fault. We didn't get her out quick enough. Other people woke her up and let her out of her crate but then went and made a coffee instead of taking her outside!
  23. Thanks! We have moved her bed into the crate so hopefully she'll be ok to use it today. I put her breakfast in the crate and she hoped in to eat it - well kind of, half in half out! Nope didn't get anything from the breeder. I will find an old t-shirt or something. Vegemite! I'll have to try that! we've just been doing the 'good girl' thing and it seems to be working. When she does something good or right we make a fuss of her and she goes all happy. I do need to try to stop her nipping and bitting feet and hands. Sooner is better than later when she thinks its ok to do it. Her little teeth are like needles! We haven't had to toilet train her at all. She goes out side when she needs to go.
  24. thanks for the replies! much appreciated. I might keep a few tins but wont be feeding her that all the time. Mix it up with mince and certain vegetables. She loves the chicken necks - even tho they look disgusting! She also loves carrots! Do you know if Natures Gift has a puppy version of the tin food? I asked my vet and they said it was ok but as long it was a puppy type (the pup is just over 8 weeks) We tried My Dog but cant find any.
  25. thanks!. I'll have to try to feed her meals in there. she loves the outdoor so is in the garden most of the day and her crate is in side - it pretty big. Right now i have to pick her up and put her in there and when i shut the door she tries to get out and then cries. Its awful to hear. One night it went on for 30 mins and another night it was only about 10 mins. its not bad i guess considering she's only been here 5 days. i dont want it to be a negative thing for her. I dont want her to be scared of it because im putting her in there and shutting the door. we have a big bed for her too (just from cheap as chips) that she lies on inside. Would it help if we put that bed inside the crate and leave the door open on the crate and see if she use it during the day and evening before bed and then switch it back? She doesnt go crazy over treats like these pediegree training treats or small bit of schmackos. so it even hard to try to get her to go in there. if you try with a toy she sees it but is way more interested in biting your hand instead! Oh yes will post some! im still deciding on a name tho!!
