  1. SWAY, perhaps you could pick the 2 or 3 you really like (as it will be hard to choose...a few really good catchy names here) and run a poll for the best overall. Just a suggestion to get a name that is quirky / great in the minds of your potential customers and help you make the final decision. JMHO Cheers
  2. Yip use Applecross and get Nadine to do it
  3. That is quite strange I transfered my prefix between states no worries without having to re-sit the exam. Also did not re-sit for my second prefix application. We moved from SA to Victoria in 1996 and transferred our prefix without any need to re-submit or re-sit the exam (this was probably before the exam was even in place though) We moved from Victoria to Tasmania last year, and again transferred our prefix without having to re-submit or re-sit the exam. Not that we could have re-submitted anything. We got our prefix over 20 years ago, well before the exam existed so wouldn't have had anything to re-submit anyway No no no.... I didn't have to re-submit my exam to tfr my prefix from state to state - the grumpy lady at the counter of Dogs Vic just told me that when I physically went in to do my transfer....SO I went home and mailed it in. The transfer was done with no problems, it just took a long time (7 weeks) BUT the people I know who did not like their new PREFIX (like the original posters situation) and wanted another one had to re-submit their exam + pay the dollars again.
  4. Definitely had to resubmit the exam as this was the part the people I know were most furious about. By the way, when I moved from one state to Victoria just a couple of months ago and went to transfer my prefix, some horrible snappy & grumpy lady at the counter of Dogs Victoria, told me I had to redo my exam as every state was different. When I pointed out that the exam is through ANKC and the same exam is done Australia wide, she still insisted I resubmit the exam before my prefix could be transferred. I just took my paperwork home with me (1.25 hours drive) and sent it in. It was done without question but took almost 7 weeks
  5. Lisa, I know someone else who did this too, real silly I know but they just picked names to fill in the gaps as they were told to submitt a minimum of 11 or some really high number of names. They ended up with a name that they later decided they didn't like (this was in WA but makes no difference what state as prefix's are issued by the ANKC) and had to re-submit paper exam and pay the full $$ again. Good luck to "your friends".
  6. Hi buddy1, You are probably just about to start the weaning process of your pups from their mum at 3 weeks old and of a medium size breed. My breeder friend starts with about 3 cups of premium kibble/dry food mixed with warmed goats or rice milk to make a very sloppy mixture for 8 Rottweiler puppies. As they grow and learn how to eat she increases the amount of kibble and lessens the milk so the slop gradualy thickens until they are about 6 or 7 weeks old and on solid dry food. She adds meaty chicken necks/wings introduced at about 4 weeks old and slowly increases the amount of these being fed and decreases the kibble as they grow.... she feeds her dogs the BARF diet so pups end up on completely RAW by the time they leave home at 9 weeks old. Good luck
  7. I meant to update this again some time ago to let you know the outcome Semen was collected from vet in SA and delivered to vet in Vic as agreed for $100 Worth keeping these transporters in mind
  8. That's the thing....but everyone has a different idea of what 'betterment' means...better for the breed, better for a line within a breed or better for the breeder of the breed? As written to a private email I got about this thread....we are arrogant to beleive that we OWN a line or pedigree. It is not ours to own. From one who's breed was on the thin edge of extinction in the mid fifties, I know all too well what happens when breeders get the attitude that they OWN a pedigree and deny it to everyone else. Why do we breed? To win at shows? To strengthen a breed that has very few in numbers so that our grandchildren can enjoy that breed later in their lives? To guard a pedigree and line for our own....why? Will anyone care in a hundred years who that person was? They will remember a name on a paper of a line that died out when the breeder passed on, because it was never allowed to be used by anyone else....clucking of the tongue and shaking of the head, with comments like "too bad too....would have been nice to have some of that now....the breed needs it" True story.... We breeders are a selfish and arrogant lot, and the sooner we step up to the plate and admit to that, the better our breeds will be a hundred years down the track. +1 angelsun, you said this perfectly
  9. Okay, a little update.... After some research and many phone calls, I found a company (who mainly deals with Greyhounds) and operates "live animal" transport between QLD, NSW, VIC, SA and can also arrange to & from WA on occasions. As an extra to their service they will also pick up and deliver frozen semen and are much cheaper than Cryogenes & Sires on Ice therefore I don't have to wait to find someone to share a container with:thumbsup: I have checked out this carrier & they come recommended by the 3 repro specialists I have personally spoken with this week and all 3 of these vets use this carrier weekly, one in SA & two in Vic. This transport company is very busy and appears to be operated from the road so they are not always easy to get hold of, but my instructions were to leave a message and they will always get back to you within 24 hours. I did this and sure enough, a lovely lady called Dorothy phoned me back a few hours later.... the rest is history as my semen is coming over next Sat and the price was very reasonable. Contact GTE Transport - 0409434445 and speak with Dorothy I hope this is of some value to some of you. Cheers
  10. What an amazing accomplishment for the Vet who did the AI. Obviously great storage of the semen too for an overall success. Thanks for sharing this story Sway - very interesting.
  11. This is an interesting topic which I felt was relevant to alot of questions posted in the last few days. I am in Victoria and I have been quoted to pay $4 per month for storage of frozen semen.... massive difference to Perth I wonder why?
  12. This is an excellent chart CaptainCourageous - obviously done on the computer - where can I get this or similar from?
  13. Yes MissMonaro, my quote was to move frozen semen from SA to Vic. I am not sure why that would make such a huge difference in price as I believe chilled semen needs specialised carrying methods too. If you don't mind sharing , who did you use to move yours?
  14. Our bitch also recently lost her whole litter between days 48 & 49 I have spoken to our new repro specialist vet about this as he found it difficult to give us any particular reason/s. He said it could have been for many different reasons and to make things worse we were moving during her pregnancy so could have been stress related more than anything else. Even though our previous repro specialist vet strongly recommended breeding her due to her having pyometra the season before, we did have concerns but we thought she was a tough bitch who had never showed any signs of stress previously. We are lucky enough though that she is okay, happy & healthy now (lost pups just over 3 weeks ago) and can be mated again at her next season. However we can not rule out that it may have been caused by deminishing progesterone levels so we will have her prog tested weekly once she is confirmed in whelp next time. Sure, it will cost us approx $40 per week for this test x 5 weeks ($200) but if it means getting a healthy litter of pups from a very good quality imported Aust CH bitch, then that's what we will do. Good luck with your girl for her next pregnancy and I hope this info helps you in some way.
  15. Thanks for the suggestion - Heading now changed ;)
  16. Hi everyone, I have just been given a quote to move Semen from SA to VIC. It is quite expensive to move one breeding worth of semen and they tell me it costs the same to move one or ten breedings. So I thought I would start a thread for people to place their movement requirements so others can contact to share a container so it is then cheaper for everyone. Not sure if you all think this is a good idea or not and people could only go on this list if they were not in a hurry, but my example is; Semen move from SA to VIC - cost (Inc GST) $265 - If there were 10 breedings of semen in that container it would cost $26.50 per breeding So if people indicate where their semen is to be moved to & from, say within a 4 to 8 week timeframe, then others can pm them and arrange for all to be moved. This might be a bit too complicated, but if anyone has any idea to help reduce the costs of moving semen in Aust, then please add your experiances. Cheers Rottsup Edited to change title and include international
  17. We have 2 Rotties - 40kg & 56kg It costs us to feed RAW only for both dogs - $45 for 8 days (that works out to be less than $6 per day for 2 big dogs) Victoria is more expensive than WA for RAW by $36 pm for what we buy but I believe that is because we feed mostly Roo and it is illegal (for some silly reason) to cull Roo's in Vic so the meat has to be brought in from NSW. We feed Roo but also beef, lamb only for the young dog, too fatty for mature dogs, chicken carcas (or wings, necks) and offal. These meats are fed either on the bone or minced. If minced we mix in some or all of the following: grated carrot & sweet potatoe, raw finely chopped spinich, brocoli, silverbeet (all veg are grown in the garden so cost is almost nothing) plus rice or oats, powdered kelp, sardines in oil, egg, garlic & yogurt. They also get the odd cooked sausage, rear cooked liver or piece of cheese but these are usually training treats. Their coats are alway shiney with or without a bath, their weights are managed within a kg only by adding or subtracting half a handful of meat mix, their "number twos" are minimal for big dogs. Good luck
  18. My friend in Perth just paid $950 for emergency C section at 11.30pm on a Sunday night - fantastic price for the time of night I have paid anywhere from $70 to $110 for an ultrasound (had 3 done in the last 2 months) Prog test $32 (in Dec 2010)
  19. Anyone heard if BOSSFACE or Durstein have their litters on the ground yet?
  20. I know of many members of the WCRC (West Coast Rottweiller Club) who have sent xrays in digital format to Wyburn for reading... not been a problem PS: Wyburn recently had a month off on holiday so shouldn't need another just yet, he just needs to drink less wine
  21. IMHO - I believe your pup needs natural calcium (soft bone at his age) for a large frame/boned growing dog. How would you like to eat the same dry cornflakes every day for breaky & dinner?? Give him some nice fresh chicken necks / wings / frames for breaky and the dry food followed by a red meaty bone for dinner. Collect whats left of the bone in the morning and throw it away before feeding chicken again for breaky. Alternate every now and then for varitiety with a meaty lamb flap for breaky which has a higher fat content which all pups need. As they grow their feeding requirements also change ie: less fat so then you can feed meaty kangaroo tails (no fat & no cholestrol) Chicken wings have the perfect fat/meat ratio for a Rottweiler. Good luck with your little man.
  22. Yes all 3 of those senarios were mentioned but could not pin point one. Our bitch was on antibiotics from the time she came into season until 2 weeks after mating. The brownish coloured discharge was red by Monday so one & a half days of the brownish colour then red and the vet said the red discharge will continue for 3 or 4 days (still there today although very little) The vet also said as long as there is a red discharge he is happy but if it turns to creamy-yellow or green to get her back to him immediately so we are watching her like a hawke.... do not want pyo He has her on antibiotics for 5 days but I am thinking I may ask him for another weeks worth. ETA: she is also 3 years old and this was her first litter
  23. Thanks for your comment Bisart Dobes... would love to think there was still some hope What breed has your sister got? We saw the spines of the puppies on the ultrasound on Sunday but we couldn't see anything on the ultrsound on Monday morning, nor could the vet. It would be so nice to think her puppies were still there but even her teats have considerably decreased in size since Monday and she has lost 3 kgs in weight from when we weighed her last Wednesday to when we weighed her the following Monday when we had the second ultrasound done
  24. Hi all, I was just wondering after reading the "Monash Vet" thread where someone commented on a vet thinking her girl had pyo when it was vaginitis. Our bitch just lost her litter during the night between days 48 & 49 after starting a brownish discharge late on day 47 (Saturday). We took her to the vet first thing Sunday morning (day 48) only to be sent to the emergency vet at Essingdon. They did an ultrasound and could see puppies but couldn't work out if they were alive or not due to the bitch panting. They suggested doing an emergency c section and spaying her to which we said no to thankfully. Got her in to see a specialist repro vet Monday morning at 8am... no puppies , no pyo, no temp, red/white blood cell count all good...but mild vaginitis detected which has cleared with antibiotics and the repro vet said he has no idea as to why she would have lost her litter as there were no puppies to examin (think she ate them as vet also said she was too far for them to be reabsorbed) and she had no signs of anything to suggest she was unhealthy in any way (apart from the mild vaginitis) Have any of you out there had the same or similar experience before? What was the outcome? Why did it happen? Did your bitch go on to have a healthy litter afterwards? Thanks in advance for any suggestions or past experiences you may be able to offer.
