I like this idea. And someone will have to explain how it all works at the start as I've never done it before. Sounds good though!

Yay! I'm doing something right, been doing the reviewing on the computer with LOTs of deleting. It takes up a lot of time but really helps me see where I'm going wrong, what could have been better etc. I've had to change lenses at the horse paddock and at the beach too (while holding two dogs' on lead too) and was a bit worried but I guess you can always clean it if anything gets in, I'm as careful as I can be.

I'm interested :)

YES - a LOT to get my head around! Thanks Snook :) I like that photo. You will have to share how you get all yours looking so awesome

Thanks Kja. So, should I work with one lens at a time for a while until I am really comfortable with it, or give them all a go? Of course the 50 is my favourite :) Also I am really worried when changing lenses that stuff will get inside while its all open. Should I be avoiding changing them when outdoors? Or do you just have to be careful?

Yeah I am kicking myself. I just had it in my head that that was the kit I wanted because it was the kit on the original camera I looked at which had a good deal going, so I had it in my head. And I was thinking between the 2 of them I'll have a really good starting range, which is true except for having to change them in between lol Thanks Huga, that's the plan. I know that's the most sensible thing to do and I don't want to make it complicated and end up with a heap of lenses I don't need, can't help eying off a few I like the look of though :) Besides the 18-105, I like the idea of the Sigma 17-70 too. But no. NO NO NO! I am doing one of those short courses through the TAFE in Spetember and in the meantime reading Digital SLR Cameras & Photography for Dummies - so much info!

I've been having great fun with the camera :) I've started doing lots of reading on how to work it and it's got me thinking about lenses. I reckon in hindsight I would have been better off getting 18-105mm & 55-300mm kit rather than the 18-55mm & 55-300mm that I got, because the 18-105mm would give me a greater range without having to change lenses I didn't think of it that way at the time lol. Too late now but just wondering how do you figure out what lenses you need? I don't want to end up with a hundred different lenses, just a few really good ones. So am I right to assume that I should use the kit ones and see what focal lengths I end up using the most, then use that to judge what type of lens I should aim for in the future? As a side note: LOVE the 50mm prime :D I took some nice shots of a friend's dog and she went out and bought the same camera within the week! But she got a 30mm f1.4 sigma lens instead of the 50mm Nikkor and is now asking me how close did I have to stand when I took those pics of her dogs? Because she is having to stand closer. I guess the guy at the shop recommended that one to her because its good for portraits? I told her what I had when she ordered but the shop person told her 30mm would be better .

How Do You Store And Back Up Your Photos?
Lollipup replied to Lollipup's topic in Photos, Photos, Photos
I will have to look at my Lightroom settings because right now it just seems all a mess and I don't know where its saving my files or how. Sounds like a good way to do it though. -
I just started a thread asking for help because my big external hard drive has crashed. If all else fails I am going to format it and start over. But in the mean time I am looking for the best way to store and back up photos, especially since I got my new camera and I will have a lot more. At the moment I don't even know how to categorise them all, there are already so many. So - What do you use to store your photos? How do you categorise / organise them? What method do you use to backup and how often?
-
yes what kja said. You can get the rewritable CDs but they shouldn't need it because they can just copy them from the CD onto their computer, USB stick etc and then do with them what they like :)
-
You can burn them onto a normal blank CD or DVD just as JPEG files and they can do what they like with them just as if they were on a USB stick as files :) Pretty sure HN does CDs, not sure about DVDs

so cute! Just want to cuddle him :)

Oh thanks Snook! It was hard. The mother had a bright pink shirt on so when she was helping the little girl there was either pink brightness or shadows cast over her. I must have taken about 500 photos to get a few half decent ones  Yeah, I'm a bit the same when it's really harsh light. You get them to look one way and they're squinting with the sun in their eyes, get them to look another way and there's harsh shadows on part of them.. lol.. but then working it out is all part of the fun too. Yes I am very much enjoying it which is the main thing. I think her mum and dad will really like the photos too. They were stoked to come out and have a go on the horsey, some nice photos will be an extra bonus. Hope so anyway because her mum is my boss  I am learning lots of things to watch out for next time every time I look through the photos. For example at the beach today I learnt that the horizon is supposed to be straight, not on a 30 degree angle

Yes this was the middle of the day (I got sun burnt!)I am trying to set aside some time to read all this info and learn how to use it properly. But yes I am very much enjoying it. Just going through some beach shots with the dog I took this afternoon so you will all be seeing that soon lol

Yesterday some friends brought their little girl out to see the horses so I took the opportunity to use the new camera. Got lots of bad shots but a few I like. I'm finding getting the light right difficult. Here are some I like DSC_1227 DSC_1182 DSC_1160 DSC_0990 DSC_0947 DSC_0904

Where do I find the size that I need for filters for the other two lenses I have? I looked on the side and wasn't sure what number to go by but the 18-55 said 52 and the 55-300 said 58, is that it?
-
Just looking on camera pro and looks like they range from around $70 to $170, does that sound right? Some of the cheaper filters can reduce the quality of your images. I purchased Hoya HD filters for my lenses which are in the upper end of the price range but I also considered what I paid for the lenses and so didn't want to risk a cheaper filter impacting the image quality. That being said, I didn't put any filters on my old lenses in the three years that I had them and I'm sure some of the cheaper filters are perfectly fine. I'd still stick with a well known brand like Hoya though (there are others but I can't think of them off the top of my head). I found some fairly cheap Hoya ones and ordered one, and another cheap one that was only $1.15. I knew the name Hoya because my day job is at an eye clinic and they are one of the brands of lens implants used for cataract surgery :)

Oh wow yes way cheaper on ebay, thanks. So just one that says UV filter, 52mm? Some of them say B&W, does that matter or does that mean it will make it black and white? Sorry for the newbie questions
