  1. I know so well what you mean. I have sadly got so attached to the pup. The pups do not belong to me but will talk to the owner of the bitch. Hard as it sounds sometimes its the only thing to do. One other alternative is to surrender him to Furkids vets also breeders - when speaking to them they said that they can have one of their staff care for a pup like this and they keep it as a pet if it survives being in a vets they would also have access to vetinary help. My husband said we can't not try a bit longer will see how he is when I give him some food if he can get it down. If he can't then we know we have given it our very best shot.
  2. What kind of vet specialist would that be. Ear nose throat? Yes agree with you and mostly have had good luck and results rearing my pups. Have bred well over 100 over the years and never have come across this before. Took him to very experienced dog breeder vet as well as the normal. All said no cleft palate anywhere even down the throat.
  3. I have been struggling with a puppy for two weeks tomorrow wrote about him in a previous thread. Am helping a new breeder out with her two pups . Since being born he has had milk coming out of the nose whenever he would drink from his mother. I have been tube feeding for nearly two weeks and taken him to the vet a few times to have his lungs checked. One of the vets said that it could be a soft palate problem as he has definitely not got a cleft palate. He is gaining slowly and is very strong, his heart is good and even though he makes a bit of rattling sound when breathing at times especially when he does get on a nipple with mum. Took him to the vet again yesterday morning and she said as his lungs sounded clear sounds like its in his nose or throat. I have been trying to read up on soft palate problems and wonder what is I store for him. I guess at nearly 3 weeks when I try to feed him may tell. I am finding myself wondering if it would have been kinder to let him fade away at a few days but hate to give up on him. The vet that suggested it may be partial loss of the soft palate did say he knew a dog that inI fact had no soft palate and did manage to lead a reasonable life. Anyone out there with experience in this would be wonderful to hear from.
  4. Great news about the pups I followed this very closely and am so happy to hear they are going well. I am tube feeding two pups at present so with 5 to feed you must be so full on. Hope all continues to go well. The little girl may be ok once about 8 weeks what are her symptoms. I once had a little female pup was concerned about but by 8 weeks she was just like all the rest.
  5. Thanks Heidley, well he was really not putting on weight and going backwards so today went to my reproduction vet specialist as he had arranged for one of the vet nurses to teach me how to tube feed. He had one feed at the vets and I gave him another two hours later. You can see his nice little round tummy now. He is sound asleep in a separate basket and I will tube feed him every 2 hours so this is all I can do. He is a really strong little fellow though still wants to drink from his mother but after a very short time the nose starts to have the milk come out so will keep him from doing that for a while. Hope he comes good I have done all I can. Will keep you posted.
  6. Me too. However tube feeding would not be a good idea at this stage. Harsh as it sounds there would be no point or kindness in keeping him going & getting weight on if there is something wrong & he can never feed himself but by all means try the dropper or a tiny teat & observe what is occurring. At least that way you can see where the milk is going. Meanwhile back on the phone to the vet. Sometimes they miss things on tiny puppies. Best of luck with him. Yes know what you mean Christina. A few years ago I struggled to keep a tiny pup going only to end iup loosing her at two weeks that was so awful to go through. Funny though he seems so strong and never cries. I can't help but wonder if perhaps it's due to his young mother. Have read there can be birth defects in young mothers as much as old mothers. I don't own the mother but did breed her. Sold her to very nice couple who wanted to breed after the husband retired. They also bought a lovely male pup to use as a future stud and sent him away for her first heat but seems brought him home too early. There was one only accidental mating both dogs were around 10 months. Had her scanned for the owner at 6 weeks revealed two pups but two spaces where pups were re absorbed. I am helping them out as the timing is so hard for them. Moving into a newly built house and both working full time. They are lovely people and feel they will probably be ok at breeding down the track. Was going to let the pups and mum go home at 2 weeks when they have leave. I did ring her last night to let her know there was a problem would be so hard if I just rang with bad news if he doesn't make it. My plan now is to supplement him with a tiny amount of divetalact every 2 hours and wait and see. Thankfully the little girl pup is doing great.
  7. I think that could be what is happening I gave him about 2 mill of divetalact. Was very slow just drop by drop into his mouth by dropper but some still came out of the nose. He seems surprisingly strong though and is on the nipple a lot. I am going to do a google on what other reasons can cause this.
  8. I feel like I'm on a see saw just when I thought all seemed well the little male is sucking quite a bit on the mum but has had no weight gain he is hardly maintaining his birth weight of 200 grams I am weighing him several times a day but no weight gain. The little female who was 70 grams less is doing very well and gaining daily. Both pups are quiet and suckling but don't know what to do with the little male. The mum seems to be fine nipples no longer swollen. Last night the milk came out of his nose again so wiped his face and left him. His mother is cleaning them and she licks the milk when it gets all over his face. I remember reading somewhere a spot of nutrigel may help. He is only 4 days today. Even though he is maintaining 200 grams he should be gaining by now. The tiny female is catching up and has gained over 40 grams. Thinking of giving him some divetalact by dropper to see if that helps. I have never tube fed before and it really scares me.
  9. So am I and thanks for your advice so appreciated,
  10. Glad to hear all came good. Things have settled down very well infact I am amazed at how quickly things have turned around. The pup I think was just a strong sucker and the over production of milk just too much for him. I cut the mothers food down, epressed the engorged teats and supervised the boys feeding and today all seems fine. No longer any engorged teats and she seems to have just the right amount as pups are quiet and both gaining weight. But like you found it very unnerving as I have not seen it before and have raised or help raise about 14 litters. I am still very watchful but hope all will be well. It's so good to know you are not the o ly one who has had a problem like this.
  11. Still felt uneasy about it all so rang the ladies at Furkids they are breeders as well as have the vets they also said that about a cleft palate right at the back too and asked if I could bring him in its over 60 Kim's from us but my husband drove me over with the mum and two pups. They have had a lot of experience with everything to do with breeding and raising pups. They thoroughly examined him and no no sign of a cleft palate any where and also said his little lungs were clear. Gave suggestion of how to feed him which I am following held him upside down on a teat it did help a bit. Gave him a swing if he did get the nose bubbles and things seem a lot better now. Watching one of mums back teats but it seems a lot better now the pups drank quite a bit. The ladies at Furkids were so nice and reassuring and didn't even charge us. Only wish they were closer to us. We are on the north they are way down the south. He is a strong little fellow probably sucks too hard on a really full teat. Hope it's only that and it improves.
  12. The bigger pup is the one who has it coming out his nose. And only two in the litter.
  13. Thanks red kids mum also rang a very long term breeder friend she said the same. This is a small mini and her milk seems like a tap. Have watched him feeding and as the milk bubbles out mum is licking it off him. The smaller girl is drinking fine. No overflow or out the nose. Did your girls milk flow settle down eventually?
  14. Thanks will get some cabbge leaves should be able to Find out how to use them on a google search. Have heard of this even for human mums. this is the first time this has happened. Have had pups with slight under shot jaw which mostly does correct by the tine first teeth come through. Never a problem feeding though.
  15. Back from the vet and he doesn't have a cleft palate and she checked his lungs very thoroughly so far all good. Poor mum has the two bottom teats swollen and hard and hot but no mastitis. After a thorough examination the vet said he has a slight over shot bottom jaw and probably why he isn't feeding as well. Advice is to put cold compresses on the back teats one in particular and supervise the male pups feelings swing him upside down after feeds. He has dropped only 2 gr from birth weight of 200 gr. now 198 day 3 but was not born till 8 15 pm. I was wondering should I try and get some milk from her and eye drop feed him. Never had this happen before
  16. Taking them to the vet first thing this morning. Do hope he is ok.
  17. He was only born 8.30. Pm last night (Sunday today) so have not taken them to the vet. Never ever had a cleft palate in any of my pups. Already you can easily squeeze milk from some of the teats just think he got too much too quickly. Will cut down on the Divetalact drinks for a day or two. Was worried the milk may have got into his lungs.
  18. I have a young bitch first litter belongs to a fellow breeder I am raising the pups for first 2 weeks. The 2 pups were only born last night one tiny one normal size . The mother seems to have so much milk already. The teats are really full. The pups are gaining and no crying but this evening was watching and the larger pup seemed to get so much milk it started coming out of his nose. This really worries me. Some of her teats are really big. She seems fine though and eating and drinking divetalact. Usually my other girls take a couple of days for good milk supply and with much larger litters seem to cope. Could it be the fact that she only has two pups. And is there any danger for her or the pups.
  19. I loved the photo of Daisy. I do hope all goes well from now on. You have been through so much you certainly deserve this litter and of course their mother to come out on top. All the very, very best
  20. How far along was she when it happened.
  21. Smiling and crying at the same time. So glad it all is going well.
  22. Are you taking her temp. I do quite a few times a day when gets to 37 or lower good chance pups not too far away. Good luck. Like all the others keep watching for news.
  23. Thank you for the other side of the story - her owners live close by and are very close friends - they do love her to bits and she visits us regularly and has stayed with us a good few times in the past - I will just see how things go - to be honest I think her owners will miss her more than she will miss them. It is the only time I intend to do this so do hope it works out - I have her mother and grandmother and do want one of the pups to keep.
  24. This has been such a riverting and heart felt post I don't think I have ever followed one so closely. Again. All the very, very best for mum, babies and you too.
  25. It's my first time for this so will just play it by ear. She lives very close to us so her owners can visit regularly. She has stayed with us in the past so will be relaxed while here.
